Wolf Hunter

Rate this book
After fruitless years hunting the werewolf that slaughtered his family, Jaylen DeWallis finally has him cornered in a tiny midwestern town. However, Denton isn’t an average alpha werewolf. He’s the Alpha. His very presence drives docile werewolves into a frenzy. Denton’s first directive to the town’s brainwashed wolves is simple: Kill the hunter. With stale, canine breath blowing hot on his neck, the last thing Jaylen needs is to meet an easygoing, sweet, and normal guy who can make him want to let his guard down.

The moment Westley stumbles over his big feet into Jaylen, he’s drawn to Jaylen’s confidence and understated humor. But before he can make plans for breakfast in bed, never mind happily ever after, he learns his pack has put a target on Jaylen’s head. As the full moon nears, Westley comes up with a last-ditch plan to save everyone—Jaylen included. However, when that plan involves revealing he's a werewolf to Jaylen, it’s his own life Westley needs to save.

It was good, for pulp, until this thing:
(Sunny’s real name was Elmer, but because of his disposition he’d been called Sunny since before Jaylen was born. It was the only name Jaylen ever knew him by.)

Here's a clue. If you have useless information and you feel like you need to put it in parentheses, it probably is really, really unnecessary, then (as opposed to just unnecessary).

And then there was a line that was cheesy. I paused and stared at it, then moved on, hoping to purge my mind. Alas, that was not to be.

You know...there really is no moral lightness about it. It's not okay. None of it is okay, really. They're all murderers and willing to ignore it because of the "nature of things" and because fuck knows why. Uh, hello? Jaylen killed a bunch of people? Sure, wolf-people, but people nonetheless? And Westley's lack of concern makes sense, but the rest of them? Really? Tom's a dictator. Just saying.

And in the middle, there's a break to talk about each party's home-brewed drugs.

For some reason, it reads like self-hate propoganda.

I actually liked the part when

Stuff happens. None of it really makes sense. I got through all of it, kind of, hoping it'd make sense eventually, and it all seems really random.

The ending was just awkward. Squicky and awkward.
There's a random menage, for one thing. There's implied animal sex, for another. Those are the kind of things you put in warning tags, you know.

*sigh
And it started so well, too...

Jaylen lost his family in a gruesome and horrifying attack by the Alpha Denton. Ever since then he has dedicated his life to exterminating werewolves from the face of the earth. Young, old, weak, strong--Jaylen will see them all dead. But first he intends to find The Alpha and make him pay, at length, for the murder of everything he held dear.

Westley has always hated what he is since the moment he killed a child in his class while West was in wolf form. He has spent years trying to come up with a blend of ingredients to suppress that which he hates most about himself.

When the two meet there is disaster in the air. Denton is slowly driving the wolves of La Mer-sur-Plaines into a frenzy, Jaylen would rather kill a wolf than kiss him, and Westley is all wolf--even if he has no desire to be. There is blood in the air, and on Jaylen's hands. Then a bounty is called on Jaylen's head. Nothing is going right at all. Finding a way out of this complicated mess is going to try the skills and patients of a reluctant wolf and a bloodthirsty hunter.

The combination of hunter and hunted is a an old one. And a one I love. The tension that builds between what is wanted, and what one knows they can not touch, is a story that makes me sit on the edge of my seat and furiously turn the page. It pits brother against brother and lover against the loved. If the story had only been this, I probably would have loved it. Loved the push-pull between Westley and Jaylen. Loved the hardhearted heat of promises of death and ever-after.

But it wasn't just that. It was a constant bloodbath. It was pointless hate. It was pages of back story that made me want to slap the Kindle against the bed and walk away. It was a story that ended 3/4 of the way through the book--yet kept going, for some reason.

I admire gruesome brutality in stories if it is done with some finesse, but here it just seemed like an endless line of death. At some point I expected a score tally to pop up at the bottom of the page proclaiming Jaylen: 23; Wolves: 48 (I didn't actually count the number of deaths in this book, but lets just say that for everyone that lived, like 5 died). It was Rambo, but furrier. It was a shoot-em-up video game. All gore, all death, and no emotion at all. Except hate. So much hate.

The only redeeming character was Westley, whom I absolutely loved. His strength to try and change his life, but his coming realization that he can't lock apart of himself away forever, without consequence, is something I really enjoyed. He grows, he learns, and he loves. Sometimes unwisely, but always with a sense of determination. I wanted to pluck Westley out of this mad town and set him down in a glade somewhere in the middle of nowhere so that all the horror of this story would never touch him. Not practical (and not just because he is fictional) but I hated seeing all the carnage around him slowly wearing at his soul.

The way that the book ended was both interesting and puzzling. I liked how the quest of Jaylen's played out. It was an interesting thing to do, and I admire the way it was handled. But I am unsure why the book was set up to have the climax at the 75% mark. It just made the last quarter drag since there didn't seem to be much left to face. And that whole Tom thing really came out of left field. I think if Tom was presented as more of a temptation earlier in the book, instead of a passing fancy, it wouldn't have made Westley's decision seem so sudden.

I was not a big fan of this book. I could barely stand to read the hate, the pointless bloodletting, that filled this book. The text was well written, but the story just made me cringe. Maybe for someone with less of a hangup about death-tolls it wouldn't have seemed so bad, but I couldn't handle it. 2 stars.

This was a much deeper story than the usual mate mine lots of sex the end books I've read in the past. A very welcome change.

I loved Westley, easily my favourite character. As a human he was sweet but as a wolf he was adorable. I'm only sad we only got to see him act as a wolf for a short time. The part in the jail cell is the BEST part of this book. Seriously I reread that scene over it was so cute.

Tom was one of the guys I was rooting for, I was kinda rooting for Cody too. There were a lot of mixed feelings in this one.

Sadly Jaylen was the character I least liked. Maybe if he hadn't been so cold at the beginning I could of warmed up to him. As it is I'm left not quite knowing how I feel about him. A very mixed up ending where my feelings are concerned.

The story line for this one was original for me, detailed and interesting. I really liked the idea and the way it played out. I was kept fully immersed in this one.

Review written for The Blog of Sid Love.

This was a pretty interesting change of pace for a paranormal/werewolf story. I always enjoy seeing something a bit different than the norm, and this certainly had that. It’s a bit darker and much more violent than what most are probably used to, as Jaylen is basically on a werewolf killing spree as he follows the trail of Denton, the wolf who slaughtered his family. Jaylen has been using a mix of magical enhanced herbs that allow him to sense the wolves from the humans.

When he gets to town, he meets Westley, an Omega wolf who uses a mixture of herbs that prevent him from shifting, thus remaining human and undetected by Jaylen. At the same time, Denton has come to town and is using his brainwashing powers as the Alpha to send the other wolves to hunt Jaylen. Not believing the Jaylen he met could be the killer Denton accuses, and feeling Jaylen must have some justification, he goes against the pack to protect Jaylen as the pack hunts him.

Westley’s best friend becomes the new pack alpha and stands by him, helping to save Jaylen after he is captured by the pack. Jaylen teams up with the pack to fight and kill Denton, but it has some very altering results.

Now, it is difficult to say much here without giving things away. However, this does turn into somewhat of a ménage, though not in the normal sense. Yes, there is a ménage relationship, but there are extenuating circumstances, and all three are never together at the same time sexually. Westley and one partner are only able to have sex in wolf form, so there is that aspect as well. Westley and the other partner are only ever together as humans. Most of the sex at this point takes place off the page without many details being given.

So, this was a bit different in more ways than one. But, the story was quite gripping and exciting, and I found it quite enjoyable. I wish we had been shown how things turned out a bit further into the future than it did and wouldn’t mind reading another story in this world.

Oh! This one really worked for me! Jaylen is a werewolf hunter and is after an Alpha that murdered his family and so what if he kills some other werewolves while he's at it....he's good at it and angry enough. Westley has found a concoction that keeps him from turning, it makes him sick, but it works. Of course most of the pack thinks his weird because he wont mate. When Wes and Jaylen meet, that's it! Wes has found his mate...but a lot of people and wolves will die before an answer to whether Jaylen and Wes will work as mates. Jaylen hates Werewolves and Wes just cant help himself when it comes to Jaylen. Theres no easy answers in this story....no one is right or wrong and it might come down to there being a three some, which actually works for me and I don't believe in them! Good job!!

I read the extended excerpt and the story seemed interesting but the writing is all over the place. I'm not a fan of information dumps in parenthesizes. It totally messes with the flow of the story. I couldn't get a good read on either MC either. They also seemed kind of all over the place in terms of internal monologues and actions.

I enjoyed a contemporary romance by this author so I was intrigued to try a paranormal. I am so glad I did because her unique take on werewolves and the unusual story line captivated me. This was non-formulaic when it comes to my usual dose of PNR and M/M romances that the change was refreshing. It does bump up against a couple of taboos for people such as 'wolfy' sex (which is not detailed out) and these are more brutal werewolves who kill and eat sometimes humans in that form when they are not human at all. See? Very outside the usual box. That being said, there are other fascinating bits that were part of the story background that were included without the story losing pace. The wolf hierarchy is alphas, betas and omegas. Same sex is not a problem for them and there is a dominant and submissive in play. Alphas are at the top of the chain with betas just beneath them, but omegas aren't just below the betas. Their whole natures are different from the other two. And the alphas of the pack have to kill even if its their own parent when they come of age.

This story has three narrators and they are all three the main characters. I didn't realize it until later why that was. I had thought this was an m/m, but its really an m/m/m romance. This is a unique menage in that two share one and not each other. One gets him as a wolf while they are both wolves and the other as a human. There is a reason for this that I won't explain and spoil the plot. I know some will be squicked out by this, but I was fine- call me quirky.

Jaylen de Wallis blows into yet another small unmemorable town on the hunt for the alpha wolf that killed his family. He is a hunter and is dedicated to revenge, but also killing all the werewolves no matter age, gender or seeming innocence. He knows that as wolves they all have the potential to be killers. He's trained and has the added help of a witch who has enchanted his blades and given him a concoction that allows him to distinguish the wolves from the humans. This will be the time he gets the Alpha. He can sense it. If only the cute bumbling Westley wasn't such a big distraction. He's attracted to the guy, but he is very strict about no commitment and Westley strikes him as the type who wants commitment. Ah well, maybe they can both scratch their itch before Jaylen must move on.

Westley is an omega wolf and is an oddity in his pack because he has broken with tradition. He refused the mating his dad selected for him and holds out for a mating that is to someone he is drawn to. Others have threatened to force mate him, but so far living in seclusion has kept him safe for now. He also has secretly found a way to stop the change process in his studies with his herbs. He remains human now even during the full moons. He's almost ready to share his findings with the rest of the pack. It will change things for so many. No more needs to turn into mindless beasts who kill and don't remember what they did. Westley is an omega so he is a non-aggressive wolf and he balks at the idea of killing. It is during one of his research trips to the library that he stumbles into Jaylen and feels an instant attraction. Not long after that, he learns that his Jaylen is a wolf hunter and promises to take out all the werewolves he can after he hunts down the Alpha of alphas Denton who is now wrecking havoc with his brutal plans in their pack and town.

Tom is the alpha heir and wants to mate Westley, but will not force him even though as an alpha he has the right to do so. Westley would take it badly and they'd both be miserable instead of the close ties they share now and how much they depend on each other. Westley is his shelter when the storm of being an alpha and the prospect of eventually killing his own father when his wolf nature overpowers him to take his place as the leader of the pack. Tom is startled when Westley confesses that the Hunter is his mate and that Westley needs to protect him from the powerful Alpha, Denton, who has come to town and is stirring up all the wolves into anger, restlessness and killing. Tom knows that when all's said and done, they're going to need Jaylen's help getting rid of Denton and the wolves who are following him in his bloody rampage.

The plot seems pretty straight forward full of danger, attraction, friendship and passion, but somewhere past half way it takes some twists and turns that I just never saw coming. The tone of this story could have gone gritty and foreboding the whole time, but it doesn't. Westley is the source of light. Even the bitter Jaylen can't resist when Westley is around.

Westley offers hope for everyone and he is the catalyst for good things. He is not as strong and powerful as either Tom or Jaylen, but he still manages to get things done. Tom is a natural leader and feels responsible for everyone particularly Westley. Jaylen has been numb and set on cold-bloodedly exterminating all the werewolves for so long and is just starting to open up to new possibilities under Westley's influence. He doesn't ever really express regret for this outloud, but he feels it later on and has to live with what he has done. I really enjoyed the dynamics that form between these three. My only complaint about the whole story is that I wanted more of the three of them together after they got everything sorted out. It's not lacking a denouement exactly; it was just me wanting to enjoy more time with these characters after all the dust settled.

So if you're looking for a gritty and slightly darker m/m inter-racial menage shifter romance that offers something a bit different from the norm, give this one a try.

He glanced at Westley, inadvertently meeting his clear blue eyes. Westley sucked on his bottom lip and looked away. Christ he’s hot.

I really enjoyed this book. It was much more of a action read than romance. Jaylen is travelling the country slaying werewolves on first contact whilst trying to track down the ones that killed his family. He is able to sense them with the help of a drug made by a friend who is a witch. The nice realism here is that sometimes he has to stop and work and he doesn’t have unlimited funds, and also that he does have a conscience about those he has killed even as he rationalises that they were werewolves. What he has never done is sat down and talked with a werewolf. Wesley is a werewolf and although he was born one he doesn’t like changing each month and has found a combination of herbs that can stop his change. What no one realises if that these herbs will also mean Jaylen won’t know he is a wolf and for the first time ever Jaylen spends time with a wolf and finds that maybe they are not all bad. Both are trying to stop the other finding out wolves exist. Jaylen is used to being alone and Wesley is genetically programmed to care for people although he tries REALLY hard not to live up to expectations. All this against a back drop of the big bad wolf coming to town and you have a great read. There are also a few laughs especially when the i-pad comes into the picture. For me the problem was I didn’t really like the ending, yes I suppose it is a HEA but in a non-traditional sense, perhaps I am too much a flowers and bunnies kind of a girl, or maybe I should accept that this way is more real life and less fantasy.

A darker take on werewolves and shifters.
Jaylon is a werewolf hunter, and killer, set on vengeance after a big bad wolf, Denton, massacred his family.
Westley is an omega, bottom of the heirarchy, but detirmined to buck that trend. Mostly by developing a drug to control his shift.
Tom is the alpha heir apparent, reluctant to kill his father to become leader. He and Westley are best friends, sometime fuck buddies but don't always see eye to eye.
When Denton comes to town, Jaylon and murders follow.
As not a massive shifter fan, I was a bit reluctant at first but the interactions between the three main guys did drag me in. There wasn't much wolf elements but those that there were were not easy - wolves killing to eat, hating the change, having no knowledge of the other state when in one.
The story was quite intense - Denton and Jaylon in the police cell for example - and certainly took a different turn after the bad wolves were routed. But again, done in a warts and all fashion. And the solution was lead to nicely but still a bit unexpected.
Whilst I couldn't say I loved it, I did like it a lot, thought the story pulled together well. 3.5*

3.5 stars, but I couldn't quite make myself round it up to 4. Still, a good book and well worth the read. I'd love to see more in this world (or with these characters!).

Favorite quote! (Because this is just too awesome.)

Westley shrugged. "Welcome to the middle of nowhere. I'm more likely to come home to find someone's left a pie on my counter than to find my television's missing. Although-" He winced.

"What?" Jaylen looked ready to fight whatever threat had made its way into Westley's home.

"Last year the zucchini crop was really good and somebody left three bushels in my kitchen."

"Oh." Jaylen deflated. So there was an enemy he wasn't a match for.

"There's still zucchini bread in the freezer," Westley offered. "If you're hungry."

More like a chunk than a quote, but too awesome to resist.

Okay. I’ve been thinking about how to say this, but I’m not sure that there is an easy way to do it. So I’m just gonna go with it. I didn’t like this book. The reason I gave it two stars and not one is because it is a creative story, not my kind of creative, but creative nonetheless. And there are two things I did like about this story of a vengeful serial killer. Those two things? Westley and Tom.

I loved the hell out of this book, until I got to the end. The rest was a refreshing diversion from the typical formulaic shifter story. I found it a bit hard to connect with Jaylen, but Wesley and Tom pulled it out of the fire for me. Nevertheless, the "ending" was a bit weird for me and totally out of the blue. It seemed to get wrapped up extra quick, for all the drawn out stuff leading up to it (which I also adored) Despite all of that, I enjoyed it, immensely.

Part of me liked it while another part of me didn't. I don't like where it ended. An epilogue might have a made a difference, but then again maybe not. I don't know, this book left me feeling... unsettled, I suppose.

Whoa! The werewolf and the werewolf-slayer manage to have a HEA? Loveless makes this look easy and vaguely probable, without stinting on the carnage. Okaaaay. Hat's off. Didn't quite believe the central romance, but enjoyed the spinning of the tale. Will definitely read more Loveless.
