The heft of an obolisk, the scant contents of a book blurb.

This is a fascinating book. I haven't read the whole thing - it's very much a dib-into affair. Each right-hand page features a well-chosen portrait photograph of a twentieth-century writer, whilst the facing page carries an assessment in a few hundred words of the writer's life, work, context and significance. Produced in Italy, the volume is refreshingly open to writers in all languages: I think not more than half of its subjects are native writers of English. Thus, there are dozens of authors I've never heard of, alongside familiar giants, stretching across the world, the century and the alphabet. Nor is there any snobbishness as to who gets included: turn the page on T S Eliot and you encounter Brett Easton Ellis; shortly after Herman Hesse, Nick Hornby makes the cut.

The text alone is intriguing enough to tempt the reader onto amazon. The photographs, however, are the true focus and are as diverse as their subjects. It is delightful but unsurprising to find William S Burroughs toting a shotgun, but quite unexpected to see Truman Capote young, topless and sensual. Kerouac is arrogant, King boyish, Pound pained; Umberto Eco a dapper academic. Some portraits are formal (Maugham aloof), some candid (high-stepping Fitzgerald), some opportunistic and serendipitous (Arthur Miller seated below a tilting axe). All show us something of the character of the writer.

There's a short introduction, a list of sources and an index of authors and photographers. Other than that, it's just 250 compelling images staring back at you...

It is such a beauty. Filled with great (modern!) authors, amazing photographs and very nice written portraits. I got it as a gift from my aunt and haven't read it through yet, but the book isn't intended like that. I am so happy that finally there is a book like this covering modern authors: Murakami, Kawabata, Somerset Maugham, Kerouac, Ginsberg, Hesse...

Fascinating. I would love to have seen a photograph/blurb of Anais Nin included in this collection, but I'm sure there are lots of readers with the same wishes about other authors.
