The Grimoire of Santa Muerte is an introductory manual for devotees of Most Holy Death, the powerful folk saint of Mexico who has drawn the wrath of both the church and state. Santa Muerte has millions of devotees and the numbers are growing all over the world! To those devoted to her, she is their friend, a spiritual mother and the source of unconditional love and protection from whom all of the necessities of life flow. She is an advocate, a healer and the performer of miracles. Santa Muerte is the patron saint of those who have confronted death and lived and those who must confront deadly situations every day. She is a spirit of second chances who avenges those who are devoted to her and punishes evil-doers. She is a godmother who guides those under her care and arranges things in much the way a benevolent and powerful living benefactor might. This book shows you how to connect with Santa Muerte and includes information about how to construct an altar for her, how to consecrate items, how to pray the Rosary of Santa Muerte and provides prayers, spells and rituals for a variety of purposes.
While I personally don't feel many of these spells or prayers would be beneficial to my own practice, I can see them being of use to those with a more Wiccan background. The first half of the book was actually quite awesome and incredibly informative so that's definitely a plus. If the rest of it carried out as such, I'd probably have given this 4 Stars but the over usage of some phrases and inconsistencies between pagan vs Abrahamic styles brought it down to 3 Stars.
NEW DEVOTEES PLEASE READ: An easy book to follow! I really enjoyed the different types of prayers included in the book, as well as the rituals and spells! A couple of critiques though:
- Based on what I’ve learned from experienced devotees who venerate and work with her, not *everyone* can “work” with Santa Muerte. It’s always best to ask Her for permission or go to another devotee for a reading. The term “working” with Santa Muerte is not the correct term to use. Because working with Her means you are performing services under Her blessing for others. If you do not do that, it’s best to say “I’m devoted to Santa Muerte” or “I venerate Santa Muerte”.
- Venerating Santa Muerte non-traditionally. I’m not an expert on this topic, however, the Santa Muerte we know today was built by indigenous roots and Catholicism. In my experience, I learned that it’s not necessarily okay to leave God out of the picture, because God is a part of Her too. I recommend watching @Pocahotnassz_ , @lalobadearies, and @aloe_246 on TikTok for more educational content on why it’s important to not strip this information out.
It’s important to do research, and I’m still a baby devotee as I’ve been in this journey with Her since February of this year. No matter how long we devote ourselves to Santa Muerte, there’s always ROOM to expand our knowledge. Thank you for reading this if you came all the way here, and blessings to you all! ❤️ May our Santisima Muerte protect us all.
DNF I really enjoyed the writing style, but the author makes a number of claims without references. From my own experience with Santa Muerte, and research of different spiritual beliefs, she seemed more or less correct. However, I was growing more and more concerned with the lack of sources noted when I ran into one that was actually just wrong. Not something small that perhaps different stories might differ on, but full on incorrect and now I can't finish the book because I can't trust the author. For all I know she's 100% correct in the rest of the book, but I don't feel comfortable not knowing that for sure. For now I'm going to take all the information she's given and use it as a jumping off place for more research on my part. Perhaps I'll finish the book and just research each claim she makes individually.
Very informative about Santa Murte. It added ti the glasses I took from Lady Rhea it’s a great book to learn all About the death Goddess and what she truly does, and how to implement her into your practices!
