When kids have no good guidance while growing up, they become irresponsible adults. This book irritated me almost in every chapter. The female of the story didn't have any backbone and allowed herself to be a pushover; her family and her kids. She's still chasing after a guy who knocked her up 18 years ago and left her at the altar. The guy she left town with not only gave her a child but he gave her HIV. She never stands up for herself, she just accepts everything that's happening to her.
This story was intended to demonstrate the trials, fears and choices we make that can destroy you further down the road. I just wish that the female of the story wasn't so accepting. The story never stated the outcome from her car designs.
Porter is a firefighter struggling to make ends meet. After finding out his son is not really his, he leaves his girlfriend of many years and his home. Strapped for money, Porter finds himself back where he never wanted to return - his mother's house. He hops from bed to bed and woman to woman in search for fulfullment.
Part Two - Winona Fairchild
Winona is a single mother of two returning to the city she grew up in and fled after 18 years. Plagued with unresovled issues and a secret, Winona is emotionally stagnant.
Part Three - Back to Porter and his immature antics.
Part Four - Porter + Winona = Relationship ????
I read this book as a group with three wonderful and very opinionated women (B, Ang, and Crystal). Now normally we don't all agree on a book, but in this case we did - resoundingly so. Frustration and anger were two common emotions. The author introduced issue after issue after issue, but I don't feel that most, if any, were properly resolved and/or addressed. These two characters had enough baggage to bring down even the biggest airplane. Without giving anything away, both of them needed some MAJOR therapy and had no business in any relationship, let alone together! I pushed through this book telling myself, "I know she (Cheryl) is not going to put these two mix matched people together! She just can't." Then low and behold - part four. The last maybe 50 pages was the best part of the entire book. While I'm not gonna say I "hated it" or "disliked it," I recommend you check this one out from your local library instead of purchasing it. I wish the author better luck the next time.
Reading, "If It Ain't One Thing", I was about to give up on this book. I am not a fan of vulgar language (such as the b word). I skimmed through the pages, read the last few pages, and finally decided to complete it. Finally, when I got to chapter 15, I was reading to dig in a little more to see what happens.
I think some of the characters rushed in and out of relationships and never really established any solid foundations. For example, Porter Washington ran through women, cheated on his best friend wife who was also his ex-girl from H.S. Pam, and baby mama Reesy...that now decides he wants to get rid of Reesy although they have a daughter, Portia together.
Oddly enough, he meets Winona through a Matchmaker phone connection and date right away, then speaks about marriage when he could never establish a solid relationship in the past...strange to me! Winona plays hard to get, innocent, using love for the Lord when really all this time she does not sleep with Porter because she is HIV-positive. I could not believe he would also share his deepest and fondest secret with Winona, a woman he wants to marry and hardly knows in my perspective. But I guess we all open up to someone we think we can trust. What an ending! Check it out for yourself.
It's been a long time since I read this book. But NOW listening to it on audible, has reminded me how disrespectful and entitle them damn kids were. UGH!
This is a wonderful book. I like the way it set up. It bounces back and forth betwen the two main characters points of veiw, but not so often as to become confusing. The female author is good at portraying the male voice. I found most of it realistic and the storyline was never boring. The only thing I would complain about is that sometimes time passed too quickly. Overall I loved it and would recommenr it as a good reaading experience.
The book started off real slow and some parts of the book seemed to me to be very redundant. And just when I was beginning to understand the Porter character. The author introduces another character, that was hard for me to follow, because I kept on thinking when is Porter going to re-enter the story.
not sure why this book was given low ratings, I thought it had a good story line and I was anxious to see how porter and winona would finally meet. it dealt with real life issues and I would recommend this as a quick read
My only thoughts after finishing this book were WTH? Not much of a review, but that's all I have to say about it. I don't even know where to begin with my frustration.
