This edition of Yellow Fog, by Les Daniels, is illustrated by Frank Villano. Limited to 800 copies, which are signed by author and artist.

This is the frightening adventure of Don Sebastian, the immortal vampire; a dark figure emerging from the shadows of the past to haunt Victorian London. Sebastian, who dwells among the horrors of the Spanish Inquisition and the French Revolution, seeks sanctuary and sustenance in a stable society of gaslight and hansom cab.

In Yellow Fog, Les Daniels has turned the traditional Victorian vampire story inside out, revealing both the aspirations of the undead and the depths of degradation that only mortals may achieve.

Stephen King has called Daniel's work "dark but human ... rewarding, creepy and fun".

When a vampire rescues a child from a train wreck and carried her to safety, he keeps watch over her for the rest of her life. Felicia Lamb is now an heiress, growing up to become engaged to Reginald Callendar, a ne'er-do-well who expects to be his uncle's heir. Imagine his surprise when his uncle dies and is discovered to have selfishly spent all his money on himself. Reginald decides he'd better marry Felicia sooner rather than later to secure her inheritance and to do that he has to wrest her away from the influence of Mr. Newcastle, a medium with whom she's very involved.

Little does he know Newcastle's real identity.

Thus begins the struggle between a greedy man who may or may not actually love Felicia and the creature who saved her when she was a child, one wanting her money and her body, the other wanting the girl herself.

This is a very well-written story, giving not only a chilling atmosphere of gothic dread, but also some interesting information about the era in which it is set. There was amusing and descriptive and well-turned phrases. The ending is totally unexpected in every way. The "Yellow Fog" of the title is London fog, of course, rolling in to make everything a little more eerie.

The cover is also very interesting since it features a picture of Mexican horror actor Germán Robles in a scene taken directly from one of his films.

The first 200 pages of this book are extremely dull. I was not pulled in by anything and I just felt it was quite boring. The last hundred or so pages are where it gets much better and has more fast paced action. Still not the best vampire story I’ve read, but it was still entertaining towards the end. I also like how it really delved into the mindset of someone who turns into a vampire and how they struggle with killing people for blood. It was quite interesting.

The fog of the title is London fog, rolling in to make everything murky and even more mysterious than it already is.

Saved by a stranger she believes is an anger when her parents are killed in a train wreck, Felicia Lamb grows up believing in the supernatural and the Afterlife. She comes under the influence of Mr. Newcastle, a medium, in reality the vampire, still watching over her.

Felicia has things other than a vampire to worry about however, thought she's unaware, for her fiance, Reginald Callendar is a gambler and a drunkard, left destitute by his wealthy uncles death and determined to marry Felicia to gain her fortune so he can spend it. He comes up against Newcastle, seeing in the medium a rival for Felicia's wealth if nor her love.

What follows is a Victorian-set gothic novel with a great deal of description, notations about the life of the times, and a chilling atmosphere enhanced by that creeping yellow fog. The ending was a surprise.

I didn't realize this was part of a series and I wish now I had a few of the other entries to read also.

This novel was purchased by the reviewer and no remuneration was involved in the writing of this review.

Old school vampire story (nothing glittery or brooding about Don Sebastian) with old school frights.

Young millennials and gen z will find it hard to believe but there once was a time when vampires weren’t emo teenagers who sparkled in the sun and stood as a literary allegory for abstinence.

Yes, before Stephanie Meyer created an entire sub-genre of a sub-genre (ruining it in the process), vampires actually used to be kinda cool. And Les Daniels hits that point home in Yellow Fog

There’s nothing exactly new or genre defining with this vampire novel, but it’s still a lot of fun. Daniels’s use of a claustrophobic Victorian London sets the stage for some great moments and heightens the creep factor as well as just being a great setting.

It’s also super easy to read and fast paced.

Bastante bien escrito, sorpresa grata. Novela de vampiros victoriana que sin ser obra maestra, entretiene mucho.
