Before that morning, before she was taken, before she took the long trip, she had skipped her usual school snack of onion rings and gummy bears in an attempt to lose the bulge around her midriff, which she was made glaringly aware of by her classmates. Too young, the girls at John Paul Jones Middle School had said, to have a belly. Can you imagine what she’ll look like when she’s twenty? But now, she would have done anything to have those extra calories, and it was the first thing on her mind when she snapped up awake inside the attic of the man who took her.
