“I seriously doubt I would have written the first story if it had not been for a bogus literary agent. I had always thought being a writer was the greatest occupation in the world.”
Darrell Case
Darrell Case is the author of seven novels, three collections of short stories, two nonfiction books and one book for young readers. He contributes regularly to Call to Glory a daily devotional with a readership of over 33,000.
Returning from a mission’s trip to the Ukraine in 1994, Darrell received a postcard from a literary agent named Jones. He asks Darrell to send in his manuscript. The problem? Darrell had never written a book. Jones was later arrested and charged with fraud.
However, this phony literary agent’s postcard awakened a spark which had lain dormant in Darrell since high school. He started getting up at 5 a.m. to write.
Darrell completed his first novel, Never Ending Spring, in 1996. Although his novel was rejected by many publishers, his wife Connie encouraged him to keep going. Since publishing his first novel, Darrell has written 12 more books. Connie’s faith in Darrell’s writing was justified in 2020 when Author Elite Awards named Never Ending Spring as best mystery for that year.
After Connie’s passing in July 2021, Darrell retired from 40 years in the jail and prison ministry is now writing full time. His new book, a nonfiction entitle A Better Way to Live, is scheduled to be released in the spring of 2022.
Sluagh: Demon of the Night by Darrell Case is a book that grabs you on page one and does not let go until you reach the last page. When Max Furman was a child he was abused by his mother, often telling him that she should have killed him when he was an infant. His heart turns to stone and one day when he is fourteen he kills his baby sister which is his first kill. When Max becomes an adult he becomes a serial killer of young boys between the ages of four and seven and goes undetected for eighteen years. Max has always hidden the bodies where they will never be found but he longs for recognition so he starts to display the bodies of the murdered boys. The FBI starts working the case and the media calls Max the Ghost. Max needs a place to hide so he forges a resume and becomes the pastor of a church. Andrew and Antoine were angels created at the same time and were close friends. When the rebellion came, Andrew stayed loyal to God but Antoine became one of Satan’s demons and Max’s personal demon.
Wow, what an imagination this author possesses which allows him to write such a great story. I read the book in one sitting except for the time I took to attend Sunday night church. I just could not put the book down until I knew what was going to happen and how the story would end. I think this may be the most suspenseful book that I have ever read. The author did an excellent job with every element of the story. The plot had some twists which added to the mystery of the story. Max was so well developed that the reader could see his psychotic character and at the same time see the spiritual warfare that was going on in the story. All the characters in the story came to life and some I truly liked and some I really hated. All the action scenes were so vividly written that I could almost imagine myself right in the middle of the action. Although the story is about a serial killer who murders very young boys, the author balanced the story by writing how God and his angels worked to overcome the evil and to bring about justice.
I highly recommend this book to everyone that likes a very suspenseful Christian story filled with angels and demons and that keeps you on the edge of your seat and biting your nails. I don’t think that I would recommend for anyone under the age of thirteen and then I feel the parent should check it out first.
Thanks to the author, Darrell Case, for providing me with a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.
As a child, Max Furman is abused at the hands of his mother. Numerous times, she tells him she should have smothered him when he was an infant. He is unloved and unwanted. The abuse and neglect deadens his heart. When his sister Katie is born his mother dotes on her the love he craves. His hatred for his mother peaks one afternoon when he is fourteen. As Katie is sleeping, he smothers her. His sister becomes his first kill. As an adult, Max develops into a serial killer of children stealing their mother’s love. For eighteen years, he operates undetected killing boys between the ages of 4 to 7. He buries their bodies where they are never found. Then Max makes a fatal mistake. Yearning for recognition, he begins displaying the dead children. Now the FBI is on the trail of the one the news media has labeled The Ghost. Seeking a place to hide he sees an ad in a Christian publication. Using a bogus résumé, he becomes pastor of Waynesburg Baptist Church Angels Andrew and Antoine were created at the same instance. They became best friends and explored heaven laughing talking serving The Lord. Then came the rebellion. Each one chose sides. Andrew stayed loyal to The Lord while Antoine joined Satan’s forces. After the fall, they became enemies sworn to battle each other for the souls of men. Yet Antoine can never forget what he has lost. Nor can he wipe from his mind his future in the lake of fire. Antoine becomes Max’s personal demon assisting him in all of his kills. Time is running out for Max and Antoine soon they will pay for their crimes. This book was a page turner. I read it in two days and had a hard time doing little else until it was over. It is slightly scary though to think thats what really goes on all over the world everyday. It makes me think differently how safe we really can be.... The only thing i get about this book is what is the title and how do you say it? Good read thoughI like how when you think its over its really not, something else happens andits like here we go again. But all in all a good read. There are a couple grammer errors and the Author did inform me that they are getting fixed so it not a big deal. I would recommend this book to those looking for a good suspence read with a lot of action and drama involved. I recieved this book by the Author: Darrell Case for review, i was not made to write a good review, only to voice my opinion on the title.
Author Darrell Case takes the reader into the dangerous and deadly world of child kidnapping in his newest mystery release, Sluagh. This book will keep you spellbound and on the edge of your seat and probably destroy your sleep pattern if you stay up late to discover what happens next. Beyond being suspenseful, it’s an excellent example of the spirit warfare going on around us at any given moment. Swords clashing, demons fighting angels, and angels protecting their human charges.
Max Furman, a.k.a the Ghost, is a madman who grew up abused and unloved by his mother and has been on a killing spree for decades, terrorizing the country. In hiding from the FBI and masquerading as a minister, he is hired as the pastor of Waynesburg Baptist Church and sets out to commit more crimes in the small rural community.
This is an adult book, and not one for the faint of heart. Dramatic and action packed, the storyline is scary and graphic at times, bringing home the reality of child abduction and serial killing. However, these scenes are offset by glimpses of God’s powerful angelic warriors at work, battling for good to triumph over evil. My favorite line in the book is the last one which brings this story full circle: “And so it was in the presence of death, a new life was born.” Amen!
Please note: I was offered a free audio book in exchange for my honest review.
My first question is, how do you pronounce the name? Once I could get past the subject of a serial killer that preys on young children, it was hard to put this book down. The story line of the angels who were friends before the rebellion, and were in a battle of good vs. evil, was interesting; it also brought a question to my mind - do any of the demons regret the choice they made?
You are on the edge of your seat and want to encourage those that come so close to catching "The Ghost", the Sluagh. If you are a fan of suspense, and enjoy the spiritual battles added to the story line - this is definitely your type of book.
Even in the midst of evil, we can recognize the Hope that is before us. I loved the reminder that no matter what happens to these bodies on earth, we will see Jesus and be free of the limitations we currently have.
Ephesians 6:12 "For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms."
Demon of the night, by Darrell Case, is about Max Furmang, who was raised by an abusive mother. She beat him, didn’t care where he was, and as a result he felt very lonely and depressed. As a child he went to the church once and even liked it but overheard a couple talking about leaving the church because they did not want their son to be friends with him. Now he knew he was rejected by human beings as a whole and he developed a stone heart. He eventually left home longing for love and despising his mother. Max acted normally on the outside but had a dark side that was hidden.
Read to find out what happens to Max. Sluagh is about crime, murder, hunger, desire, demons, angels, and a pastor. Why is the FBI looking for him? Is he insane? Is he a portrait of evil?
This story is exciting, suspenseful, and very imaginative. This is a great read! Thank you Darrell Case for offering the book free to me in exchange for my honest opinion.
I am giving this author five stars for a well- written and well plotted story with characters that have made this such a great Christian crime solving , adventurous , mystery. I have read a couple of his other books before this one and they are great Yet they can each be read in any order as they are not in any particular series type of order, see? I liked this story with all the excitement of the crime-solving adventurous mystery involves that only gets better as one gets deeper into the book/story,see? I recommend this book for older teens and adults than for the very young as it may be too much of a shocker and too much for them to handle as yet. I received this book free in exchange I am now reviewing his book. Great job in the creation of this story building type,of book. By Angela L.
This is a psychological thriller with a wonderful twist. While we get a vivid picture of the psychological character of the killer; we get an even better look at the spiritual fight that goes on around us all the time. Other characters in the story are very well developed too, so we get a look into the lives of some saints who are prayer warriors and have discernment, which makes them fearless and lovable. I listened to this all day and begrudged taking the time to eat a bite at 4p.m. The narrator does a fantastic job. the writer is gifted and thorough. I recommend it to anyone who enjoys thrillers and anyone who doesn't usually like the genre - like me - but loves a well written book or enjoys seeing christians portrayed as they really are. There is more than one character study in this book and one lady stands out as a kindred spirit for me.
