A book of love and survival. Cynthy and her sister Ezra are soul mates, and love and support each other. Father Heron Kindred and mother Lena are so in love, that it bleeds over into their family. And their friends Lettie and Caesar with kids Lindy, Ernest and 2 small twins. But being the only black families in 1957 in rural Maine has its drawbacks. Especially when the sheriff hates blacks, and the other white monied people of the community would like you gone. Heron is the teacher at the private school, and Caesar is the janitor. But when a white uppity teacher sets hate in motion, it winds up literally running them off and death follows. A lesson to learn -" be bold to love my life and never hide who I was" - ; " Do you know how long our blood will stain this history? " and "This world promises us harm, and there's nothing you can do about it, except to have the nerve to love your life"

This story was absolutely heartbreaking and so beautifully written. Such an important read. Would recommend in a heartbeat.
