A lot goes on in this book. Daisy Jones is just trying to live her life as a normal girl – date that cute senior, Kevin, get on with her life -- but her gifts are keeping her from being able too. She meets with a new friend Vivi – whom is unpredictable and filled with mystery. Somehow they are all connected – Daisy, Danielle (her best friend), and Vivi – they all get the same dreams, ones that are from another era – another past life. If that is not weird enough for you, a vengeful spirit is trying to break loose from his hell, and is seeking revenge. That is just creepy. There were a few chapters that were eerie and gave me Goosebumps. (As much as I like to read books with paranormal elements, I get scared way too easily. Call me a wimp, whatever.) Gift, brings you that feeling, when you are reading it; that feeling that some ones looking at you. *look over shoulders* I’m becoming paranoid just typing up this review. Hehe. There’s a mixture of friendship, romance, and historical features that will draw you in. The flashback – or rather dreams of their past lives – were the most interesting part of the book. I loved how instead of throwing it all in your face at once, Andrea Buchanan eases us into it, and reveals the details bit-by-bit. I was dying by the end of the book, to know what’s going on, so captivating. It is after all the blurb that attracted me to requesting Gift on NetGalley. And as expected, the book is worth your time.
The characters were interesting. I would have never thought the four of them would ever become friends, based on their personalities. They are all so distinct. Vivi, the quiet – in-her-own-world type of girl, Kevin the teacher’s pet, and lovely boyfriend material, Danielle – loves to enjoy herself, and Daisy … is well Daisy. But one of my favorite characters is Mr. Terry. He is one of those laid-back and chill types of teachers, and he reminds me so much of my Junior math teacher, Mr. M. He would always joke on the students, in an endearing way; and he knows how to read their mood; when someone is not talkative, he them set in and join in on their own – and how can I forget about dressing up as a “rapper” for Halloween – how many teachers will do that? Yup, he won the hearts of all the students. Mr. Terry although oblivious, he seems as if he knows something. I kept having suspicious thoughts about him being the mastermind behind all of the whoopee-voodoo stuff, but he’s clean; a memorable character. Kevin is a charmer, not in that “Oh, I know I’m good” kind of way, but he’s lovable and kind. Good guys finish last? Please, not for this girl, Kevin can tutor me any day! I say, Daisy has at least that going for her. ;)
If I enjoyed it, then why the 3.5/5 rating, you ask? Well, I loved almost everything about this book, except after a while, it started to drag a little. I know I am going back on my words. I said that the fact that Andrea Buchanan delivers her details bit-by-bit was good, however a few details were mentioned a few times, where I felt it wasn’t necessary.
Enough of my blabbering just go check it out for yourself!
