In Love with Nowhere

Rate this book
Oliver Free is a successful writer, a renowned master of the horror genre. He is famous, wealthy and respected, but he is also an alcoholic and a drug addict. His life has spiralled out of control. His wife left him, he barely leaves the house anymore, and now the world knows about his vices.

To save Oliver's career, his agent hatches a plan. Oliver is to stay in an isolated cabin in the middle of nowhere, camped out in the North American wilderness. He won't have any access to the drugs that have kept him sedated for so long, won't have any contact with the world he avoided. It's his job to write a blog, keep the public updated on his struggles as he tries to overcome withdrawal and get his life back on track, but as his mind and body weakens and succumbs to the disease of withdrawal, Oliver realises he isn't alone. Something else is lurking in the woods and whatever it is, it seems to be very interested in him.

In Love with Nowhere is a dark and intense psychological horror.

As I was reading this book, I found it easy to get into quickly. The story is simple enough; a celebrity is addicted to drugs and he's coerced into getting clean by going to a secluded location, free of distractions. But while there, he suffers from delusions and hallucinations and questions his sanity. This would've been great, except that it was disjointed, and I often found myself confused and wondering whether the segment I was reading was reality or not. I guess that was kind of the point, but the execution of it was poorly done. As a result, I couldn't finish the novel. Maybe next time.

Well, this book was better than the last one i tried to read, but that didn't take much. I at least was able to finish this one. Luckily it was a short book. This story has three distinct and different sections to it. The first is the set-up. A well known writer suffering from writers block and substance abuse is being pressured by his agent to complete a project that is over-due. He sets the writer up in a secluded cabin with no distractions in order to force him to work. The second part of the book is a blur of rage, hallucinations, and flashbacks, most of which is incomprehensible and which goes on far too long. The last portion of the book tries to make sense of the second section and, in my opinion, fails in doing so. Sighs. On to the next book.

The germinal idea here was brilliant but the author was not able to make us feel it. The premise of this story was unique and fresh, it was the word crafting that faltered. The descriptions of the effects of withdrawal should have had our stomachs twisted in knots...but it didn’t. The subtle manipulations of fate were too subtle, we should have felt terror...but we didn’t. Even the author, in the ending chapters felt he had inadequately told his story because he felt the need to explain what had been going on. A case of tell not show...kind of like those stories that end with...and then he woke up for a terrible nightmare...

I didn't find this book so bad as the ratings might do...but I do have a complaint; this is not a horror novel; this was a story that you go through quickly and at the end you learn the big lesson...I don't know the right term in English.
I guess Oliver is one of the characters that you either feel empathy for or not. I found the storyline very simple but in this case as mentioned I think that was the point. We were supposed to see where self distruction with drug abuse lead...I suppose to people that never had any problems with it find the story boring or maybe hard to relate with the main character.

I think I was attracted to this book because the title reminded me of a horror movie that wasn't half bad, but I couldn't get beyond "Day 3" in this book. The situation is preposterous: leaving this guy alone in the woods of Idaho? That's an invitation to manslaughter charges, if not murder. And Idaho? Why Idaho? Is there nowhere in, say, Scotland, to set him adrift? Finally, I'm the kind of reader who can get over a preposterous plot if the liveliness of the writing carries me along, but that was not the case here.

First off... lol soon as poor Free started with his day and night dreams, I would kind of laugh and say .. geezz its like Im reading a story book version of " Oliver Free; This is your Life" with a little bit of Twilight Zone mixed in.

I definitely would not categorize this in the "horror" section.. cause it's not. There is really nothing scary about it at all maybe more suspenseful, with just a little bit Twilight Zone(ish) to add in.

I had no idea what I was going to be reading when I started this book. So, I was confused at first, but the storyline drew me in and captivated me to the end. In Love with Nowhere is a very different kind of "horror/suspense" story that will have you turning pages as fast as you can to find out what will happen next.

HORROR&SUSPENSE?

The horror was that I purchased this book. The suspense was how much longer was I going to subject myself to the agony. About half way through I think I discovered some meat on the book but it quickly disappeared like cotton candy in the rain. Get a Koontz, or a Hill instead

This was a rollercoaster read: as soon as the story would start to become suspenseful, it would get lost into flat boredom again. It gained momentum in the last chapters but the ending was still disappointing (and kinda confusing). For a book marketed as horror (it is NOT horror) and suspense, it almost goes... Nowhere.

Stunned....

I started reading this book because it stated that it was a horror and suspense book. After reading the first couple of chapters I was disappointed because I was looking for monsters and horrors that make you want to sleep with the lights on. What I found was a man who was fighting demons that are hard to defeat. It makes me appreciate life.

I quit this depressing story without finishing it at the 36% mark. I had found 4 errors so far.

Not great....kind of lame and very predictable. Sorry but what can you say, I was interested enough to finish the book.
