A history of the Germanic people from obscure and unknown beginnings to the early Middle Ages, scratched from scant written and archaeological sources in all possible corners, from the pen of Der Spiegel's editors and writers. Since the Germanic people did not record their history, but the Romans did, any history of the Germanic people inevitably ends up as a history of the Romans' relations with them. Reading it, it turns out that the Germanic tribes were, from the very beginning of their relations with Rome, mainly marauding hordes who plundered, killed and ravaged the ancient world, a kind of pirates on land. Later, in search of a more promising habitat, the Germanic tribes also settled within the borders of the Roman Empire and, over the centuries, completely leavened/overran the western part of the Roman Empire - and the Empire leavened/overran them. This is how medieval Europe came into being, but that is already another story.
