For within every heart lies the dark seed of betrayal.
Kyra Dune was born in Oklahoma, but spent most of her life travelling with her family. She is the author of more than 30 fantasy novels, including: Shadow of the Dragon, Elfblood, and Firebrand. As a child, her favorite stories were those that told of ordinary children being whisked away to magical lands. She has yet to find her own secret wardrobe or rabbit hole, but she hasn’t given up the search. You never know what might be waiting over the next rainbow.
Although I've tended to steer clear of fantasies lately (not sure why), I was glad to get my hands on this book. It's short, sweet, and really a good read.
The writing is well done. I was drawn into the world and had no problem seeing those castle walls build up around me. The characters were lovely - maybe a strange way to put it, but true. I think it's the mixed cast, which really makes the characters shine. Some are evil, some are good but most are something in between - makes them easy to love and/or hate.
There's a lot of action and feeling in the pages, never allowing for the story to feel slow or bogged down. I read it one sitting and enjoyed it.
So why the four stars? I wanted more. The story is terrific and the length doesn't do it justice (only 180 pages). I felt that a few things could have been deepened or a couple sub-plots widened a little bit more to give the story even more 'beef'. The super characters and plot deserve it.
But I definitely recommend this story and can't wait to get my hands on book 2.

Web of Light Kyra Dune has created a vivid, credible world populated with a variety of different races. These include flyers, blood witches, humans and the Gari-Za, each with different needs and vices, their coexistence filled with tension. When the queen calls for a conclave, something that hasn’t been held for decades, all are suspicious as then tenuous peace between them hangs by a thread. The imagery and character development are strong, the suspense gripping as various hidden agendas and legends come to light. The main character, Seva, is endearing and you relate to her reticence easily as she is plunged into the middle of it all when she already has enough issues of her own. It’s best to plan to read this book in one sitting and have its sequel handy because by the time you reach the cliffhanger ending you have more questions than answers.
When the Queen calls a conclave the people attending are a strange mix of Humans, Flyers and witches. Seva is half flyer. Not knowing her father who she inherited being a flyer from has always bothered her. Seva finds some friends at the conclave and they go to the temple of light where something strange happens to Seva and she finds out about the web of light, a powerful spell which is now inside of her. The adventure continues in this well written book that is about mysteries and the hunt for power by all.
I was blown away by this beautifully crafted story! Kyra Dune is definitely an author I will be reading more from. I was sucked right in from page one and didn't let up even at the end. I am highly anticipating the next book! Each of the characters were unique and interesting. My favorite characters were Valdor and Seva. Kyra created an unique world of different and original creatures. There was action, mystery, drama, magic, power and romance mixed into one epic journey. If you enjoy YA fantasy you'll love this story.
A digital copy of this book was provided to me in exchange for an honest review.
The story is an enjoyable fantasy, revolving around a host of fascinating characters. The premise is set upon on a conclave that Queen Eanndra calls all the leaders and their heirs for, after decades. The point of view is from Seva, the chirpy, bold and at the same time, fragile protagonist, who is a half-flyer. She knows she inherited the flyer side from her father, but she has no further clue of her inheritance. There are many people with many natures and attitudes she meets at the conclave, and even makes some friends from among them. When Seva and some of the others visit the Temple of Light, Seva ends up with a powerful spell inside her, called the Web of Light. What can Seva do with this spell and how is it going to help her world, is what the book takes us through.
There are characters that you can imagine, and cannot - there are witches, flyers, the Gari-za and of course, some human beings too. We read and learn about how they all co-habit and co-exist, at times in harmony and at times not. Another character that lingers on in the mind is Valdor. The characterisation is remarkable. The author has done a fabulous job of carving out characters in good light, bad light and sometimes a greyish light, making it easy for the reader to like, dislike or empathise with a character. At times, I was slightly bewildered with the pace of the book, but being a short one, of about 180 pages, sometimes the author is left with no choice but to hurry through certain portions.
This was an enjoyable read and I definitely recommend it to lovers of fantasy.
I received a copy of this novella in exchange for an honest review. While I found this book slow to start, once all the characters were introduced, the story took off. For such a large cast, Ms.Dune does a great job of developing everyone as unique and easily identifiable individuals. I was happy to see actual growth in the characters.
Her world is well thought out with a solid plot and obvious history. The care put into developing such a complex set of differing societies adds great depth of the story. Differences in technology, community structure, construction, fashion, and religious/spiritual beliefs are explained. Each race is clearly different with the exception of the Gari-Za. This race is singled out as being so different that it makes all the other races uncomfortable. I'm not really clear what that difference is. It's mentioned a few times that they have different coloured hair and worship a goddess no one else believes in,but that doesn't seem to be the uncomfortable difference. Neither does their type of magical ability seem to be the things that makes others *so* uncomfortable. I would have liked a little more clarification on this issue, but it isn't something that affects the quality of the story.
Overall, this is a gripping adventure with characters you can care about and identify with. I found myself sucked into the story and by the end of the ebook, I was definitely interested in reading the next one in the series.
AMAZING book. This is my first book by Kyra and I'll definitely be reading more. I love Seva and the other heirs and the learning curves they are going through before the older generation steps down. The book is very well written and I couldn't put it down. It's a great read!!
