When Claire Fitzpatrick returned to Rose Hill after working in Hollywood for twenty years, she never dreamed she had come home to stay. Three months later she is working at the Bee Hive Hair Salon, sleeping in her childhood bedroom, and wondering what to do with the rest of her life. When one of her customers is murdered, Claire is determined to find out who did it and why. She’s also learning that when a situation feels familiar, it may be a sign to run in the opposite direction.
Police Chief Scott Gordon doesn’t believe Rose Hill’s crankiest octogenarian died from natural causes, but he dreads calling in the Sheriff’s homicide detective Sarah Albright to help him prove it. He’s finally engaged to the love of his life, and he doesn’t want anything, or anyone, to rock the leaky boat that is his relationship with Maggie Fitzpatrick. Everyone in town has an opinion about their wedding, but the person whose opinion matters most – Maggie – doesn’t want to talk about it.
It’s June in Rose Hill, and along with the warm sunshine and blue skies have come political upheaval, shocking scandals, and an outbreak of mysterious murders.
Pamela Grandstaff lives in West Virginia. She writes the Rose Hill Mystery Series and books for children. All books are available in paperback and as E-books.
It really is a cozy mystery, I forgot about the crime. A bit disappointing for not giving an enclosure to it, but I guess it's to be continued.
The first half was stressful. So many characters, so many things happened in the past I didn't know, and so many people-with-link that I thought it was impossible in real life. I know it's a small community, but when your relatives and colleagues know any resource you can use, it's too fictional for me.
It's also more complicated than other cozies I ever read (which is a few). Again, it's a small community so everyone's past seems to entwine with others, especially in romantic way.
But the second half was better and the author told us some back up stories I don't know whether it was on previous books or not. The ending makes me curious as well. Like, will the MC make the same mistake and such. But I think I won't touch this series no more. At least for now.
🖊 ”declined herself” ??? How does a person “decline herself”?
🔻 Claire whirled her best cape around her shoulders and fastened it around her neck. Gigi wriggled back and declined herself, . . .
What a disappointment, and what a trick on me. This novel was described as “If you like cozy mysteries with a little romance and humor, you will love the Rose Hill Mystery Series,” of which Lilac Avenue is a part. It took all the way to Chapter 4 for the not-so-mild, but unambiguously profane language to pop up. 🗑 Conversely, other readers may find this story their cup of tea, but it was not for me because of the vulgarities.
I loved Daisy Lane so very much and decided to try the next book in the series, Lilac Avenue. Lilac Avenue is not as good as Daisy Lane. In Daisy Lane, a woman was coming home at the end of the book. She is coming home to her husband and son. She is home. In Lilac Avenue, she has not arrived home yet and she is not married. This drove me crazy. The author had a habit of writing: he said, she said, etc. in conversations. I don't recommend it and I won't be finishing the rest of the series.

Mamie at ninth seven waiting for her coffee, and regales of how it use to be served. She tells us as she walks along, hoping to make it back home. A fall and she tells her heart to stop, to save her some trouble, It was murder but why. Then we have Claire of what she is doing with the signs of age. Scott and Maggie engaged, but she won’t talk about it. The drama and murder continues in this good series
What a wonderful mix of crazy and sane and just plain entertaining! A compelling mix of humor and some angst, and oh yeah, there is mystery, too. I started out of order, but I will go back and read the books I missed.
Why would anyone want old, ill Mamie Rodefeffer dead. Claire Fitzpatrick having recently returned home and now without a permanent job is curious. A continuation of the Rose Hill series, with its romance and mystery. Overall a enjoyable well-written cozy mystery
Here are the answers, the book, not the review! Why is she so single? What are her beauty secrets that made her so fabulously wealthy? And one that still puzzles me; how can she get so much done in a day?
Hard to write a review without giving part of the plot away. So, it was like this, a murder, two ex wives, family, greed, and happiness. Must read the entire series!
This series just keeps getting better and better! I was not too surprised that Mamie's relatives finally did the old battleaxe in, and while you knew from the get-go who the main suspects were, it was difficult for them to prove it. I also loved all the hoopla about Scott and Maggie's wedding. What a unique way to handle a wedding for a reluctant bride! I enjoyed all the deep introspection into the personal relationships between characters and the struggle Claire and Delia face daily, trying to deal with Ian's increasingly hostile Dementia. I have a friend who went thru this with her husband a year or so ago, so I know first hand how difficult that can be. All of this together makes a really compelling read, and a wonderfully deep series.
The Rose Hill series keeps getting better and better. This book focused on Claire and Kay, the latter being the City Administrator also running for mayor of Rose Hill. During the time frame of this book Maggie, Hannah and most of their extended family are on a beach vacation so all the unofficial sleuthing is done by Claire and Kay. Since Scott is with Maggie (yes, they're now married) at the beach on a month's leave, there is a new police chief covering law enforcement in the town. The current mayor and his cronies are getting their due for embezzlement from the city's coffers. Since I am binge reading the series, now I'm on to the next one, Sunflower Street.
This volume of the Rose Hill series again features newly returned Claire who is trying to solve the murder of a client, (and one of the town´s crankiest senior citizens), and is also trying to plan Maggie´s wedding to Scott as a surprise, so that Maggie can enjoy it without feeling like everyone is pressuring her. As usual the interactions between the townspeople is almost as much fun as the solving of the mystery. On to the next in the series!
