Although usually I read zombie tales for my horror fix, this one looked intriguing - and it sure was!

It felt a little Twilight Zone, a little Stephen King, a little apocalyptic, but the author definitely has his own voice.

A divorced Dad sets out to drive his sullen and self-absorbed daughter back to the city. On the way, they are delayed by an inexplicable event that has horrific effects on the people around them. Stuck on the highway with strangers, the rest of the story delves into how people react in a crisis. A science fiction-y crisis.

I don't hand out five stars often, but this one kept me riveted.

A great look at the true horror of what humanity is capable of as desperation sets in, even in the most mundane of environments with characters you both sympathize with, yet despise. I find myself thinking of this nightmarish scenario weeks after finishing it, which I cant a for most books I've read. The ending wasn't quite what I expected, but I’m not sure any payoff would have felt satisfying after the orchestrated escalation of tension throughout the book. Solid read.
