Basalt by A.S Olsoune.

I really enjoyed this book, maybe because it's slightly similar to my own (in regards to the parallel universe thing) but also because it was done in a completely different way.

The beginning starts off so mysteriously you can't help but be sucked in, with little tidbits of the plot being hinted at here and there. Our main character, Colin Basalt, begins hearing voices in his head that warn him of danger to come, and it. is. on.

The further I read into this book, the more I enjoyed it. The four main characters are extremely individual and unique, plus reading from a boy's perspective was very refreshing.

The ending had me glued to the book and was absolutely, infinitely awesome, but the last page or so made me drop the book in stunned silence. It was the kind of plot twist that sets your heart racing and leaves you short of breath. It's been a while since a twist did that to me, but Basalt managed it in spades.

I cannot wait to get my hands on the sequel which came out about a month or so ago AND NO ONE TOLD ME!

I highly recommend this book to lovers of adventure and fantasy.

BASALT: NYRIACH BOOK ONE
RATING:

Hey, how's it going? This book review has a SPOILER ALERT! right here and now so proceed with caution!

Well, I enjoyed this book quite a bit. Enough, at least, to write a review on it and (as you can see above) give it five stars. Now, for those of you who don't remember how my scoring works since this IS a new account of mine and all, five stars doesn't mean it's my FAVORITE book, but that I thought it deserved five stars. Likewise, one star doesn't mean I hated it, just that I didn't like it.

Now, on with the review. Please keep in mind that there will most likely be spoilers below so proceed with your own caution in mind.

--------------------------------------------------------

Where to begin? Well, I enjoyed each of the characters in their own right. I like to have complicated, break-the-cookie-cutter-mold types of characters, and I thought each of these characters did that in their own way, though I will emphasize that I can't wait to see more of their development. Colin acts a lot like one of my brothers did at that same age, so I found it amusing to read from that perspective, but I also appreciated the hints dropped along the way that what he knows and what he thinks he knows are two different things--especially when it comes to his friends. I'm intrigued about getting their sides of the story. I understand the next book is from Adrienne's point of view and has a lot more scenes with Ms. Olsoune's side characters.

That sounds like a brilliant combination to me, but I suppose we'll have to wait and see on this one.

Furthermore, I enjoyed the feel of the book and the multiple running plot lines/mysterious air about it. There are questions that we get the answers to by the end, and even more that we don't, and I am anticipating the grand reveal of these questions as we go on. It took a while to get used to, but eventually I felt as if every sentence was going to be some sort of hint that I wouldn't understand until after I read the entire book--or until I finish the entire series.

Now, there's not a lot to go off of from just one book, but as we keep going, I'm going to try and make some predictions about what will happen/won't happen, character backstories, opinions, identities, etc. However, since I contacted and asked the author first, she requested that I hold off on this for a little while just until the books get their footing a little more. In the meantime, she told me to make sure I check out some of her other pending work and read the first two chapters of Cigam on her blog.

So make sure you check back in with me after the second book is published, so I can reveal some of my own theories and share some of the "clues" I'm pretty sure I've found.

At ease, soldiers,

I have high hopes for these books. A lot of people have been complaining about teen and even children's books that have content not suitable for their age groups and too much political controversy, but this first book avoids things like that while still being entertaining for people of all ages. I'd still say 12+ as an age bracket, but anyone older than that will enjoy the book a lot.
