What if Rose Hill's most vicious gossip had access to the deepest secrets of the town's most prominent citizens?
Police Chief Scott Gordon offered Margie Estep a deal: if she quit her job at the post office and helped her invalid mother move into a nursing home, he would not arrest her for mail-tampering and embezzling. This deal may have saved her mother, but it left Margie desperate for money and revenge.
After mailing several malicious letters Margie has disappeared, and it's up to Scott to find out if one of her blackmail victims made that disappearance permanent. Maggie Fitzpatrick is also doing some investigating, despite Scott’s disapproval. The list of suspects grows longer as Margie's poison pen pals are revealed. When Scott follows a hunch that leads him closer to the killer, he also risks becoming the next victim.
It's February in Rose Hill, and love is in the air; unfortunately so are heartache, blackmail, and murder.
Pamela Grandstaff lives in West Virginia. She writes the Rose Hill Mystery Series and books for children. All books are available in paperback and as E-books.
I got this as a free e-book on amazon.com. Book 1 is also free on amazon.com and you need to start this series with book 1 to get the complete picture of who is who and what secrets are being kept. This is book 2 in this series and it is the continuing story of life in a small country town where there are a lot of secrets and gossip and the occasional murder. I think you need to read these books in order as the story continues from book 1 on wards and there are cliffhangers that do not get resolved until later books in the series. The mystery or the romance is not centre stage; it is the glue that holds the story together. The day to day living in a small country town with a myriad of characters is the main driving force of the story of each book and the over reaching arc of the series are the secrets. An engaging read and it kept my interest. 4 Stars.
This is a must read in order series. This, the second book in the series, takes up where the first one left off. Without giving anything away, I will comment that some loose threads will make you want to jump right in to book three. Luckily I got a three-book set from Kindle Unlimited as my free “book” of the month.
What a soap opera this town is. The sheriff is investigating a murder involving blackmail, and just about everybody in the town is implicated. While not a cozy mystery series, it has many of the elements. The multiple interwoven plots featuring different characters resulted in a book that kept my interest.
I gave the previous book 3, but I am giving this book 4 stars. I still wish these books had a list of characters with relationships in the front of each story. This book actually helped me understand the first book better as it explained what, why, how exactly happened. This is a continuation of the first book. Margie, the ex-postmistress, has riled up nearly the entire town. She has stolen mail for years and knows the *dirt* on many people. Blackmailing is now on her agenda;however, she doesn't get far because Margie has angered one too many people and is found dead. Scott now has the job of finding which townsperson killed the unloved Margie.
Interesting setup and am always looking forward to the next corner and whom it what silicone into being . Man woman or?? It is interesting the dresses she dons. Looking back to her beginning as Rose, I have to keep reminding myself of her very adventure in the shop in England and how far she has come since then. Always another adventure. Where will she end with a happy life and with whom?
I am confused as to the name of her protective friend. Is the using of the similarity to another well known character the right thing to do?
This series has me hooked. It has everything. Murder, humor, romance, you name it and you can find it. There are lots of characters, one more interesting then the next. Rose Hill seems like a place I would love to live. I would say the main characters are Scott, Hannah and Maggie. Scott is the Police Chief and Maggie and Hannah always seem to have their nose in his investigations. On to book 3!
The story is great, love the characters. However proofreading needed to be done more thoroughly. The author obviously changed the name of a character from Rita to Diedre and changed all ritas to Diedre. As a result, the program changed every rita to Diedre. For example, irritated became irDiedreted. These types of errors occurred throughout the novel and were quite annoying. Lost one rating point with me.
A rare story when suspect list multiplies but never diminishes.
The entire town had reasons to hate this woman. No one liked her. The police just kept finding more and more deplorable things about her.The murderer should have been rewarded not punished.
Margie Estep is a vicious gossip and seems to have access to the town's secrets. So when she disappears nobody is cncerned, hoping that she has finally left. But things are not that simple. A good mix of mystery and romance makes this an easily read story with quite a range of characters.
This follows the Fitzpatrick family in this town, their friends, and neighbors. This has to do with poison pen pals, embezzlement, and Margie disappearing. A lot is a retelling of the murder in the first book. Good characters, and noisy neighbors to enjoy knowing.
This book is a what the neck can happen next. You have two brothers who have not been home in a long time, monks, letters telling secrets, love, and a falling out. Good till the last page is turned.
Small town crime and almost everyone is related. The only thing bad about this series is you have to read the next to get all your questions answered.... maybe that’s not so bad since I’m enjoying the storyline.
A story that tells the mysteries in the small town of Rose Hill in ten days! Maggie Estep the ex post mistress, a nosy busy body makes plans to disappear but end up murdered.
Now through book two and have all the characters straight. Definitely need to read book three to find out what happens. The mysteries are secondary to the characters and their stories.
This is a fun series for cozy mystery fans. Small town. Lots of characters. Decent plotting. Well written. Characters are more than skin deep. It is an engaging setting and series and a light read.
my only complaint was when a note was received, we never got to read it. the recipient read it silently and we never got the info included. solution was a real LEFT FIELDER. it came from ET. good read.mp
The fun continues. Love the animals and the people and the murder is fun too. Some people deserve to die maybe and some don't and it's not always easy to tell the difference.
Really enjoying this series! This second book in the series returns to Rose Hill and the same characters, with new mystery and suspense. I really like that while it continues on with the same characters each story is a stand alone. I look forward to visiting Rose Hill again.
A real page turner...I just couldn't stop reading! Loved the setting and the characters. May have to purchase next book to follow story and find out what happens to key characters.
Another great mystery and murder in a small town. I am reading the series in order as there are always loose ends to tie up in the next book. Will Maggie and Scott finally get together? Will Mandy and Ed's romance survive living together? Will Sam get his act together and come back to Hannah? Sounds like a soap opera but the main part of this story is the convoluted mystery!
I must add that the beautiful covers almost sell the books by themselves. I wish I had a water color series of the covers to frame!
I am continuing to enjoy this mystery series set in the small town of Rose Hill. I would probably give it 3.5 stars, with a little taken off for typos, mostly use of the wrong word of two homonyms (site instead of sight, peak instead of peek, etc.) I´ve become quite involved with the life of the small town and all of it´s (mostly) related characters. The mysteries are well done, but it´s the interaction of the population which makes them fun. I´m continuing to plow through this series at a rapid pace.
this was excellent! I enjoy this series. Maggie and Scott play off of each other well, and I was happy to see Margie get axed in this one - she's caused enough grief and trouble to last many small towns a millennium or two. There are some issues in this one that will be resolved down the road, and this is one series where reading in order is important as each book carries over to and from the next and previous books.
Wow, for a very small town there sure does seem to be a lot of action, criminal and otherwise, in this book series! The characters are quite compelling. I feel pretty immersed in their lives now, with this second book. Lots of action, great characters, a very dry sarcastic humour (just my kind!) throughout, and a good main mystery, with many more mysteries to come hinted at! I'm enjoying this series enormously!
This one was better than the first. A little confusing, but every good mystery is. I do wish I had the information the author alludes to, with the back stories, but probably that will be covered in later books. And there are plenty of loose ends to still wrap up, like the mysterious old woman and Lily...
