D.W. Whitlock, author of Crucible of Fear, has been a storyteller for most of his life. Starting with short stories scribbled in crayon, animation flip-books, stop-motion and later CG animation for television and video games. While pursuing a career in animation, writing has always been the first step, from short descriptions to detailed backstories. As a life-long reader and book lover, crafting thriller novels felt like the natural evolution of those first forays into writing.

When not writing, D.W. enjoys gaming, spending time with his family and Triumph Motorcycles.

D.W. lives in California with his wife, son and dog, Nikki.

First and foremost, a large thank you to Reedsy Discovery and D.W. Whitlock for providing me with a copy of this publication, which allows me to provide you with an unbiased review.

After being handed an early copy of the series debut, I returned for another early proffer by D.W. Whitlock. In a story that spins the reader in many directions, Whitlock offers readers something worth their while, as things take a dark and highly intense turn from the opening pages. Well worth the look for the curious reader!

Many have wondered about the work of the reclusive Clarissa St. Claire, though no one is quite able to to connect the dots. In a research facility away from the prying eyes of any country, St. Claire has something on the go that is both nefarious and mysterious, an odd combination. This is sure to attract many lookey-loos, but only a select few will likely sacrifice it all to know what awaits them.

While it is free from any prying eyes and regulations, there are many who feel they need to get answers and are willing to sacrifice to get what is needed. Enter Alex Schofield, who has amassed not only the fearlessness required, but owes someone a favour. Schofield is left to find his way there and delve into the research project known only as ‘Nocturne’. What awaits him is more than just a scientific project, but actually a complex system that could revolutionise the world. As Schofield pushes deeper, the truth about Nocturne comes to the surface, which only causes more concern, as Clarissa St. Claire’s real plan is soon revealed. Armed with his wits and a determination to shed light on what’s happening, Alex Schofield must forge onwards in hopes of saving not only himself, but protecting those who could feel the Nocturne impact without even realising it. A curious piece by D.W. Whitlock that leaves the reader with more questions than answers.

While I do read quite a bit, there is something about D.W. Whitlock’s work that sticks with me. Readers can be assured that they will be pulled into the middle of a complex story and left to simmer for a time, before eventually shaking themselves off and feeling the chill. The narrative flow is strong and keeps the reader in the middle of the action throughout, providing a strong push and some decent development. Characters are impactful throughout the journey as well, providing some colour and flavour to a dark and sinister tale. The plot, which is ever-evolving, does not leave time for the reader to catch their breath throughout, which can be a good thing in this case, as there is so much going on. D.W. Whitlock is one to watch for the years to come!

Kudos, Mr. Whitlock, for another intriguing piece that will sit with me for a while as I try to make sense of it all.

Maelstrom of Darkness (Alex Schofield #2)
by D.W. Whitlock

I received and advanced complimentary copy and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Alex Schofield is tormented by the nightmares of his past. The opportunity arises to right those wrongs and lay to rest the ghosts that haunt his waking hours; what choice does he have but to grasp it with both hands? His future depends on infiltrating Nocturne, Clarissa St. Clare’s questionable research facility; she sees Nocturne as humanity’s only hope for the future. But on arriving at the complex, Alex faces more than he bargains for. Question upon question abounds, each more intriguing than the last. Can he find the answers to Nocturne’s secrets before time runs out?

Due to its exceptional attention to detail, Maelstrom of Darkness, Book Two in the Alex Schofield Darkness Series, is the type of novel that could be successfully adapted into a classic movie. The reader is quickly hooked on the suspense and gets lost in the detailed world of the characters with their well-developed backstories. Each phrase illuminates their actions, making them appear more natural. D.W. Whitlock nails this aspect with his descriptive writing style, which is a gift. The world and environmental descriptions provide detailed insights into the characters’ emotions concerning what happens and why. The story consists of flashbacks leading up to the main events which contribute significantly to the novel and engage the reader. I love how these elements come together to form something truly prestigious.

I award this book a 5 out of 5 because the author has produced a well-crafted story. Every page, every line serves a purpose. People who appreciate the art of deliberately detailed penmanship will enjoy this book the most. Highly recommended!

Thank you to the Author for an advanced copy of the second book in the Alex Schofield series.

If you're looking for a fast paced, and VERY dark thriller, this is what you will want to pick up!!
In this, We continue following Alex Schofield, as he is blackmailed into going undercover on a Biological research station in the middle of the ocean, far from prying eyes and any government regulations. Things take rapid twists early on and we learn that many lives are now on the line, including Schofields. Many of the plot points are reminiscent of what is happening in the real world right now. This factor really made this book even more intense for me, as you realize, all of this content can (and may already) be happening in the world.
The story never slowed and had constant mind bending twists and turns. The ending leaves us wondering what is to come next for Schoefield, without the dreaded cliffhanger.
Well done again Whitlock!!

I’ve enjoyed every book I’ve read of Whitlock’s and Maelstrom of Darkness is no exception!

I love Alex as a character and I was excited to return to his world as he embarks on another job that is going to turn out to be much more difficult than he hoped.

This story lives up to its name. A lot of it is very dark, but also well written and I enjoyed the unveiling of the mysteries aboard the Nocturne.

This is another great installment in the Alex Schofield series and I look forward to the next book!

*I received and ARC from BookFunnel and this is my honest, voluntary review.*

The first book in the series was excellent but this one was fantastic! Fast paced with believable science and characters building to a climax that left you on the edge of your seat. There is an opening left to build a further series here and I will be buying each if and when they become available!

4.5stars-- MAELSTROM OF DARKNESS is the second instalment in DW Whitlock’s contemporary, adult ALEX SCHOLFIELD suspense thriller focusing of former US Delta soldier Alex Schofield.

Told from third person perspectives, following several intersecting paths MAELSTROM OF DARKNESS follows former US Delta solider Alex Schofield as he is task with aka ordered to uncover the truth behind the dark secrets and human experiments on the high-tech biological research facility known as the Nocturne, a free-floating research facility in the Pacific Ocean. Missing women, medical research and threats to the safety of everyone involved forces Alex to dig deep into the bowels of the Nocturne, only to discover a chasm of failures left to rot and die. With the aid of Clarissa St. Claire, Alex goes in search of the truth, only to come face to face with something no one could recognize. Meanwhile, Alex’s past refuses to let go, blaming Alex for the atrocities of war in the Middle East, a blame that places Alex in the direct line of fire. As Alex continues to unravel the possible toll to humanity, innocent lives force our hero to refocus on what was and what will never be.

Like book one Cult of Darkness, MAELSTROM OF DARKNESS is a detailed, complex, twisted and haunting look at power and control, and the obsession with youth and living forever. With a blend of science fiction and science fact, MAELSTROM OF DARKNESS is a cautionary tale; a through provoking story of what if and how.
