I really considered not reviewing or even rating this trade at all, considering my reaction to the ending of Mass Effect 3. (I really, really, really hated it.) I almost skipped reading it entirely, for that matter. But I do still care about this setting and these characters. (More, I suspect, than whoever wrote the ending of ME3, but I digress.) And two of the stories are about Tali and Garrus. Understand: I've played through ME five times, ME2 four times, and ME3 once. And over 95% of the time, I had either Garrus or Tali in my party. I'd bet that half of my missions were done with both of them. And Garrus was my love interest in the only profile that I took through ME3, and remains my favorite love interest. So yes, I did need to read this comic that promised some of his backstory. Considering the bad taste that ME3 left in my mouth, can I write a really unbiased review? I'm not sure, and honestly, my pre-ME3 reviews of the tie-in books weren't unbiased, either.

Here's what we're promised: previously unseen backstory on a handful of much-loved characters, written by the same writers who worked on those characters for the game. What we get are short stories with James, Tali, Garrus, and Liara, with the story (but not the scripts) co-written by the character writers. Thus far, no complaints. I like all these characters, love Tali and Garrus. And for the most part, the characters do sound like themselves. I have absolutely no complaints about James's story, which shows his family life before he joined the military. But the other three have flaws that probably only hyper-critical and over-invested fans will notice. I totally noticed.

Tali's story explains how she got that recording of Saren in the first game. A nice thing to see, except that the story has her partnered up with another quarian. Something that's never hinted at in the game, and seems contrary to the spirit of the pilgrimage to boot. Garrus's story is about his time as Archangel, and his relationship with his father. Awesome, except that the comic says that Garrus coined the name Archangel for himself, while in the game he sure wasn't claiming it. No, they aren't completely incompatible with game canon, but it's enough to make me wonder just how much input the character writers really had here. Not enough tell the comic writer that there's no way in hell Liara would allow The Illusive Man to monitor her Shadow Broker lair.

The art quality is variable. James seemed off-model in his story, though the art was decent. The art in Garrus and Liara's stories were both pretty good. But the artist on Tali's story was drawing quarians wrong. (The wrong number of toes, and the legs were shaped wrong.) I think it's entirely reasonable to expect that an alien race will be drawn correctly in a tie-in comic, so I was irritated. Luckily, the artist on Garrus's story could draw turians.

But this isn't another Mass Effect: Deception. If you love Mass Effect, and if any of these four characters are favorites, then this really is worth a read. If nothing else, the characters sound and act like themselves, and that was huge to me. But it could have been better. Lately, I've been disappointed with the effort Bioware has been putting into their tie-ins. This seems to be continuing that trend. If this hadn't had Garrus, it would be two stars. But it does. I am weak.

So far the best of the Mass Effect comics. These four issues go over the origins of beloved crewmates and/or fill in the gaps between the games. Every single issue provides a substantial amount of backstory and increases narrative cohesion, which is the best you can expect from a media-tie in. The art is also quite good all around. Below I'll briefly detail some points of interest of each issue in case you want to know what they cover.

1. Vega: This issue goes over Vega's origin story, as well a little scene taking place at the start of ME3.
2. Tali: This issue goes over the events immediately preceding Tali's introduction in ME1.
3. Garrus: This covers a bit of his origin story, and also covers the events immediately before he meets back up with Shepard in ME2.
4. Liara: This covers the events after ME2: Lair of the Shadow Broker and leads into the Mars mission in ME3.

I really enjoyed the short snapshots of Mass Effect: Homeworlds. They went a long way to fleshing out the characters within a very small wordcount. Tali's story was my least favourite, but Garrus, Liara, and James Vega all had excellent entries that really helped build on the people they were going into Mass Effect 3.

Again, there is nothing here for people who are not fans of the games, but from a lore perspective, Homeworlds did its job admirably.

After reading Evolution and Invasion, I was so excited to read this, but I am REALLY disappointed in the quality of this graphic novel. The stories were poorly written, and the art was an absolute joke compared to the previous novels. What the heck happened? Evolution and Invasion were beautifully drawn, this looks and reads like a Saturday morning cartoon from the 90's.

I enjoyed ME: Homeworlds but I suspect that half of the reason I did enjoy it has to do with the fact that I am so enamored with the Mass Effect Universe to start with.
As I've recently said in a recent post/review, I played all three games in the trilogy in the space of a month, so that should be a good indication of how much I enjoyed the games. I don't/haven't ever, played anything so intensely. I finished the last game just yesterday morning, so the entire story is still very fresh in my mind. Which made reading the four stories contained within Homeworlds icing on top of the cake for me.

Lola James Vega
The first story, Hell On Earth chronicles James Vega's humble beginnings. I thought is was a good look into what makes the man tick. I liked Vega already, simply because he was a wise-cracking, simple, good ole guy from the 'hood type of character, but this story showed his vulnerabilities, making him all the more human. I didn't much care for the art, which alone isn't bad, but the Vega in the story doesn't look like the Vega I know from ME3.

Keelah se'lai (By the homeworld I hope to see someday.) Tali'Zorah nar Rayya
The second story, The Galaxy Betrayed, gives us some insight into Tali who appeared in all three ME. I won't give away any spoilers, but Tali is in a bit of a bind and she is on the run and her life is in danger. the story is fine although it doesn't reveal anything new about the character. Additionally, the art, like in the first story is fine as it is, but lacks something of the flavor of ME and thus Tali isn't quite Tali. she is only really recognizable due to her clothing and face mask. Something isn't right about her proportions.

Forgive the insubordination, but this old friend has an order for you. Go out there and give them hell. You were born to do this. Garrus Vakarian
A Bullet For Yor Sins is my favorite story in this tale. It is about Garrus, the beloved Truian, bruh-ski of Shepard, bad-ass, intellect, warrior, support of Shep. This story starts in his childhood, tells about his strained relationship with his father, his entry into C-Sec in the footsteps of his father and then his eventual disenchantment with law enforcement and his break away until he becomes Archangel. Gotta love that guy!

Who votes to take the vehicle into the creepy underground tunnel? Liara T'soni
Last Hope for the Galaxy features Liara, our pretty blue Asari. This tale takes place between ME2 and ME3 after Liara becomes the Shadow Broker. She shows just why she is such a cool character. I didn't deal with her all that much in the games (minimally) but if I do a replay, I will remedy that for certain. She's pretty cool and the whole mono-gendered, mind melding to procreate race of pretty women is a cool and unique concept. While Liara was tad bit off, in terms of the art, I like that she wasn't hypersexualized as often happens with the women of comics.

To be honest, I wasn't expecting much from this, but I was pleasantly surprised. It was great to see four of my favorite characters back in comics form. The stories were great and build upon these characters' histories fairly well.

Heavily recommended for Mass Effect fans.

MASS EFFECT: HOMEWORLDS

Okay the comics are beginning to get somewhat good now. This is now my favourite over Omega’s invasion purely because it’s a series of 4 short comics on individual characters. James, Tali, Garrus and Liara all get their own small stories.

Surprisingly James’ story was quite decent. We get some backstory to his past. His father was a drug addicted abusive man who controlled James for much of his life. But his Uncle helps him out and encourages him to join the military and get away. It adds some depth to an otherwise boring character though I’m not sure his past ever mentioned in game so it just seems to be added in as an afterthought.

Tali’s story is decent too. I can’t tell if these stories are all that good or do I just love these characters? Anyway this one was a real throwback taking place back in ME1 just before we meet Tali for the first time. We see Tali begin her pilgrimage and the abuse Quarians go through. They’re seen as a lesser species and discriminated against which I don’t think we saw enough of towards Tali in the game. ME2 or 3 has a side quest where a Quarian is falsely accused of theft and Shepard steps in on her side and scolds a C Sec officer. But overall I felt the game should have shown more instances of abuse towards Quarians. It was a beautiful moment when Tali recalled how she used to be called Suit Rat when she first came to The Citadel now she’s seen as a respected figure.

Garuss’ story is probably my favourite. We see his relationship with his dad and their opposing ideologies and methodologies on how to deal with issues. His dad was a by the books C Sec officer but Garrus was Garrus. So we see his transition into ARCHANGEL which is pretty cool. It ends with his Standoff in Omega where he’s a lone Wolf sniping dozens of criminals trying to kill him. He has one last bittersweet call with his dad thinking this is the end for him until he sees the N7 badge in his scope. Icl that part actually had me excited and I wanted to replay his ME2 recruitment mission.

Lastly, there’s Liara’s story of her being Shadow Broker looking for a Prothean weapon or device to stop the reapers. Ehh who cares. Death to all Asari.

The three-star is the overall rating of the comic. All of the stories had good colors and some good action sequences. As for the plot, some were better than others. That's why I'm dividing each of the stories to give them individual ratings.

James Vega: 3 stars

I thought this one was good, since we don't really get a lot of information about James in the game. It was really interesting seeing where he came from and why he was concerned more for his uncle than his father once the Reapers hit. It did make me want to know more about his character, so it earned points just for that.

Tali'Zorah: 2.5 stars

This was fine in terms of story. It did show how other species treated the quarians, which we get some hints of but not a lot. I'm mainly giving this a low rating because of the art style. I'm not sure why the artist drew the quarians so differently from every other species. On top of that, Tali was posed in a few too many sexy ways for my taste.

Garrus Vakarian: 3.5 stars

This was my favorite one, in terms of story. I liked the flashbacks to Garrus as a child with his father. I liked the build-up of him working with others and becoming Archangel. I really liked the end where he called up his father, thinking he was going to die. It was great seeing Garrus interacting with his family and how they shaped him into the character he becomes.

Liara T'Soni: 2 stars

I'm going to be honest that I was not all that interested in this one. Liara is showcased far too much in the games, and then in these comics she already got one dedicated to her. It just seemed unbalanced and unfair that she got featured again when they could have done a story about Wrex or literally any of the squad members in Mass Effect 2.

I like learning more about the characters, but it would've been nice learning about different characters. Maybe do something with Thane. His story is so interesting! For what we got here, it was fine.

it's okay, i'm cool with it. i liked garrus' comic the most and it's not even cos i'm a garrus fan (far from it, actually), but it's the one that did most to drive some character point that we saw of his vigilante justice mind and his subsequent failings from it. set at the perfect timeline of his me2's recruit mission, i loved the little scope of the n7, showing how much shepard's influence has shaped not just his immediate chances of survival, but growth in the sort of things he is able to do better than before. james' and tali's were pretty weak tbh, everyone has some cliche tough/abusive dad to fight against and push back from, but i don't have much emotions to spare for these characters' backstories with their fathers, whom i don't think are as interesting as some other crew+parents we could've explored, such as miranda or samara. liara's is probably the one with the best potential to tell something truly unique about cerberus alliances and morals of a larger plane wrt to the reaper invasion, but just when i thought it was going somewhere, it ended so abruptly i was shocked. nice to see a buff drell bodyguard, though, clearly a species very forgotten in mass effect canon.

wouldn't have minded something different here on other members even though i get they're trying to shed some light on the me3 crew. still, i draw criticism to the constant neglect of kaidan and ashley in these sets, who are 2 human characters with such a rich background grown out of trauma that the writers care so little about in fleshing out. tali, garrus, liara, these are all popular characters that have been done to death with so much endless attention on them already. even wrex of the original crew is never treated with respect, so you can say i'm just sick of these fandom and writers' pet chars. not the best addition to the series, i'm happy to leave this one behind and move on to the next one in my collection.

The stories are varied and help in knowing the characters' past and goals better. It's skippable, but I'm a completionist and the artwork is pretty good.

The Reapers have invaded Earth. James Vega is looking to get in touch with his family. News travels slowly during the war. He remembers how his father abused him before he left for the military.

Tali's race, the Quarians, have been seen as pariahs after they created and then lost control of the Geth. Her goal in life is to help her people return to their home planet.

In his youth, Garrus was pushed hard by his father to become a skilled sniper and model C-Sec officer. This aliented Garrus from his father until he decide to go his own way and build a team to challenge the crime lords on Omega station.

Liara T'Soni is desperately looking for information to defeat the Reapers. Her investigation leads her to Prothean archives that may have the answers.

This was my favourite graphic novel in the series because it deals with all of the characters that I love. It features stories with James Vega, Tali, Garrus, and Liara from before Mass Effect 1 to Mass Effect 3. If you are a fan of the video game series then I highly recommend reading this graphic novel because you get to know more about these characters that you wouldn't have learned before. You get to see James pre-Mass Effect 3 when he was just a teenager, Tali before Mass Effect 1 when she discovers the Geth recording, Garrus before the beginning of Mass Effect 2 when he was beginning to become Archangel, and Liara before Mass Effect 3. I loved seeing these characters again and reading this graphic novel made me want to replay the entire original trilogy.

Mass Effect 2 Archangel
Tali: เป็นเหตุการณ์ช่วงทาลิหนีตายหัวซุกหัวซุนก่อนจะได้เจอเชพเพิร์ดที่ซิตาเดลใน Mass Effect 1
Mass Effect 3

More origin stories!

I can say that it was a pretty great volume. We get so much background information into what some of our crewmates have been through.

I liked James' coming-of-age story. Enjoyed Tali's recovery of the information of Sauren's betrayal. Got the feels from the Archangel's last stand. And just about gushed over Liara's badassness. (Seriously, you see Liara in the first game and see her now. It's like day and night. And I love the NIght.)

4 stars out of 5.

More of a 3.5 star rating;
Instead of a single story throughout the entire book, this volume collects several stories of some familiar characters into one trade paperback. I really liked learning more about James, Tail, and Garrus since their stories gave some insight into their personalities and/or motivations which was really interesting to read. While I liked Liara’s story, it was a bit confusing with all of the (new? or just new to me?) characters and sorting out the dialogue order.
Thus far though, compared to the previous mass effect comics, I like the Homeworld issues the most.

A collection of short stories focusing on the backstory of a few of Commander Sheppards crew, the best parts of this highlight Tali's initial foray into her pilgrimage, as well as Garrus reflecting on his initial training, and how he became Archangel.

Since these two are my favorite characters in the series naturally I loved them.

There are also some stories focusing on Liara and James Vega, which I found less enthralling, but still decently done.

Not gonna lie, I totally got this volume solely for the Garrus backstory. Because my turian bae is everything.

Biases aside, the Tali pre-Shepard storyline was good, too, and I do love the bit of insight with Liara. James was never someone I cared too much for game-wise, so that first short was meh at best. Overall, worth immersing myself back into ME space.

I really liked this one. You have a chance to explore some of the earlier stories of the companions from Mass Effect: Liara, Tali, Garrus, James Vega. Despite being well-developed characters in the games, there's still more to them.

When I saw that this was another collection of vignettes, I was disappointed. It wasn't too bad, though. The art was hit-and-miss (why can nobody get Liara right?) but the stories were much more interesting on average. The Garrus story was the highlight, though I might be somewhat biased.

I really don’t like how Tali is drawn here. The weird butt and crotch shots add nothing to the already thin story. I have a similar problem with the other graphic novels. Can we please treat her like a real character like the games do??
