REVIEW: SHARKS by Emna Child
[AMAZING ANIMAL KINGDOM #1]

368 species?! NO bones?! FIVE rows of teeth?!! Oh my!! And that's just a fraction of the important information to be found in Emma Child's SHARKS [ first in the AMAZING ANIMAL KINGDOM series]. Read this, and you will know a whole lot about--the Shark Kingdom!

"A Very Interesting Fact-Based Adolescent Guide on Sharks"

This is a great guide for youngsters to learn about sharks which dominate our oceans. I believe it can be very beneficial especially to teens who still dream about their career choices when they are older. Such a guide can perhaps sway a young person to seek further education in oceanography or marine biology. It's very interestingly written to hold the attention of youngsters especially when making comparisons of the senses of sharks with humans. Here, kids will also learn that pups don't only mean puppies which like to sit in laps; because baby sharks are also called pups ... and I don't think they'd be fun to hold in our laps! And, imagine the Hammerhead Shark with that big, big nose! Does the Lemon Shark really eat lemons? This series is really very stimulating and I enjoyed it. It is excellently written with beautiful photos of several shark varieties. It also reveals the importance of sharks to the ocean environment in providing balance and healthy populations of sea life. This author writes to encourage youngsters in learning more about animals and all living creatures which share our world. I look forward to many more wildlife guides from this author.

Giving facts about anything, in such a way that Kids (and some adults) can easily understand is never an easy task, but this author has done a good job.

The chapters are short enough not to get boring for the younger readers and the photographs are great for keeping their attention as well.

I also like the way some unfamilair words are explained.

For me, the book should have reached 5 stars but it is not quite long enough, or give information about more sharks, e.g., the very small types were not adequately covered by explanation or photos.

Sharks

There are several different sharks portrayed. This reveals a lot of information on sharks with a captivating sense of wonder. Their habitat and food source, along with pictures that clearly reveal how much sharks can vary in size and appearance. I loved the great variety of pictures. I think children will too as they discover how much there is to discover.

Great for use in Home School

I used Sharks: Fun Facts as a supplementary book for my children’s home school science class that we were going over sharks. It is worded so that children are able to read it easily. As well as being full of great facts to help elevate the lesson.

Author cannot tell a mammal from a fish or a reptile

The book has erroneous information. Two notorious cases are when the author refers to sharks and turtles as mammals! Sharks are not mammals, they are cartilaginous fishes!

For centuries, sharks were called the "wolves of the sea" out of respect for their hunting ability. Now research on these fascinating creatures has shown that a vital part of their prey-finding equipment is the electro-sensors in their heads. Because all animals give off a small amount of electricity, these sensors allow a shark to hone in on a potential meal in the vast ocean with the precision of a bat using "echolocation" to pick an insect out of the dark sky. So maybe we should start calling them "the bats of the briny deep."

Another hunting tool is the shark's ability to sense blood from miles away. Blood means an injured animal and an injured animal is easier to catch and puts up less of a fight. As fearsome as they seem to us, even the largest sharks have to look after themselves. There are no shark hospitals and a wounded shark can't lie in bed and recover. A shark must keep swimming and hunting.

As always, Ms. Child has taken a lot of wonderful facts and presented them in such an interesting way that the reader (regardless of age!) finds himself drawn along and acquiring knowledge effortlessly. And what kid isn't interested in sharks? We know that the chances of being attacked by a shark are minimal, but the fact that we're playing chicken with the fiercest predator in the sea gives a little added excitement to a trip to the beach. Look! Is that Jaws?

I really enjoy Emma Child's books. I really love sharks, and reading about them. This book was very informative, the pictures were great, and it was a very fun read. I also can't explain how excited I am to say that this book did NOT have ANY mention of evolution, nor did it say anything about sharks being millions of years old! (Which isn't true, as the earth is only about 6,000 years old.)From what I have read, I find it very hard to find books for children on sharks without the author stating evolution and that sharks have been alive for millions of years, etc.
Thank-you Emma Child!

I've always been fascinated by sharks, much in the same manner as dinosaurs. I think most children are. In my dim past I was one once.

As she usually does, the author gives us a good primer on sharks, first with a general accounting of common habits, then goes over the most common types and their habits. Though there was one I wasn't familiar with.

Lots of photographs accompany the text.

Wonderful book the young ones will enjoy.
