Romana’s proud new Gallifrey is falling – the Daleks have come through the Axis from one universe, preparing to conquer all others. Swarming through the corridors of the Capitol, the Daleks seek, locate and exterminate everyone they find – because they are searching for something, a something they believe will give them domination over the entirety of existence. And it can only be found on this particular Gallifrey.
Whatever happens, wherever Romana, Leela and Narvin go, the Daleks will pursue them until they have what they want.
But elsewhere, someone else in another reality has a plan of their own, and is waiting for the right moment to confront Romana. Is this salvation or the ultimate betrayal?
22. EXTERMINATION Gallifrey Fights...
Having infiltrated the Axis, the Daleks have secured access to a myriad alternative realities and, with them, countless Gallifreys... every one with secrets to be plundered.
As her new world falls to the might of the Dalek invasion force, Romana finds herself struggling to keep her friends alive as the Capitol collapses around her.
Against all odds, there may be a way out - back to the Axis and, potentially, back home. But desperate times call for desperate measures and, ultimately, sacrifices...
23. RENAISSANCE Gallifrey Lies...
Returning to her original homeworld, Romana finds Gallifrey to be cold and empty... the corridors of the Capitol lie silent and the wastelands are populated only by a handful of primitive monsters.
Her only hope lies with the appearance of a strange young woman: a woman with a masterplan so devious it makes Romana’s own masterplans look decidedly not-devious-at-all...
How far would Romana go to save her world? Would she risk the Web of Time? And who is the mysterious stranger watching from the shadows...?
23. ASCENSION Gallifrey Rises...
Romana’s sacrifice sees Gallifrey restored to its former glory, but at a terrible cost.
As the Time Lords begin to reclaim their stronghold, Leela and Narvin find themselves trapped in a decaying reality... and only K9 can help them.
As old friends fight to reunite, new threats lie in wait...
Because Braxiatel was right: war is coming.
This release includes a bonus documentary, looking back at all six series of Gallifrey, including interviews with the cast and crew.
I would like to take a moment to appreciate Narvin going from wanting to throw Romana under the bus (probably a literal bus if he could) in Series 1 to saying "I don't think I can live without her" in Series 6.
Also we were ROBBED of Romana and Leela going to Paris and being space girlfriends gallavanting round the galaxy together. ROBBED, I TELL YOU.
This collection of 3 hour-long episodes had the unenviable task of not only wrapping up the "alternate Gallifrey" arc of the previous two seasons, but also the "time terrorists" arc of the first three, an ending that had, by this point, been long delayed.
* Extermination - This episode has the somewhat simpler job of concluding the "alternate Gallifrey" plot line, which it does by facing off the non-time travelling Gallifreyans of the alternate reality against the Daleks - a foe they are entirely unfamiliar with. For the most part, it's an action story, with the three central characters struggling to survive against the Dalek invasion as the death toll mounts around them. The resolution is, perhaps, not terribly innovative or surprising, but it's notable that Romana shows a particularly vicious streak in one scene with the Dalek commander, lending a dark tone to the story.
* Renaissance/Ascension - Effectively a two-part story, this concerns the main characters' return to the original Gallifrey, to face, and hopefully resolve the viral outbreak created by the Free Time terrorists at the end of the third season (released seven years previously). The first half, as they try to figure out their new surroundings, moves rather slowly, although there is a decent build up of mystery around events, as well as an entertaining turn from Juliet Landau as the Third Romana, travelling in from the future (or is she?) Things pick up immensely in the second half as what's been going on finally becomes clear and Gallifrey stands, once again, on the brink of disaster.
There are a lot of nice ideas in this final episode, with the sort of complex plotting that was evident in the early seasons. There are a number of nods to the fans, too, with references to events in both the old and new series of Doctor Who, and, in the form of Landau's character, even the BBC novels of the late '90s. With both the main plot arcs wrapped up, this could have served as a perfectly good finale for the Gallifrey series as a whole (and was apparently intended as such at the time), although later stories did follow, and one can see their seeds here.
The final episode is an easy five stars, and the others come close enough that the average rounds up to that, too.
Gallifrey Series 6 is what I like to see as the end of the original Gallifrey series before it was revived with Intervention Earth and Enemy Lines, before going into The Time War. I've been hyped for this set for a few years since it's an epic Timelord vs Dalek story across The Multiverse.
Extermination: The Daleks have access to the access and now they're invading every single Gallifrey in the multiverse only Romana, Leela, and Narvin can stop them, but first, they'll have to see everything they've worked towards disintegrating. It is the end of the world and Romana is desperate to do everything she can to save it.
Scott Handcock has written an incredible story, it is action-packed, emotional, and intense while concluding this alternative universe Gallifrey arc wonderfully. It's an epic story with many explosions and casualties. The Daleks are wonderfully frightening in this and it's great to see The Doctor's companions openly hopeless and afraid without him to save them. 10/10
Renaissance: Romana, Leela, and Narvin are back on their Gallifrey, but their world is barren and lonely everyone is gone, the dogma virus has done its job. But there's another Romana here, a future incarnation come to help, but should they trust her?
James Goss has written a terrific script and a great character piece for Romana. It's a story that explores her flaws. It's a fascinating story that is occasionally unsettling and quite clever. Juliet's Romana reminds me a lot of 7, she's very calculative, manipulative, and quite ruthless in her methods. 9/10
Ascension: Romana is back on Gallifrey and the people are desperate, the Timelords want her to be president again even if she doesn't. Something has been waiting in the darkness for a long time now and finally making its move. The Daleks are here and their plan is finally coming to fruition.
Justin Richards has written a finale that concludes all 6 series of Gallifrey, we finally get the answers to questions we've had in our minds since the first series, and holy crap this is insane, the reveals are amazing, the stakes are high, the characters are brilliant but oh my lord is it controversial! I loved every second of this epic finale, what a way to conclude the original series. Bravo Justin, bravo! 10/10
6.1 (22) Extermination - Daleks invade! Daleks from another universe! Oh my! (3/5)
6.2 (23) Renaissance - Didn’t really care for this one. It felt very disconnected and scattered all over the place. I had trouble accepting this Romana 3 with an sense of believability and was troubled by how easily everyone else seemed to accept her at face value. The whole thing felt very contrived and forced. (2/5)
6.3 (24) Ascension - And another chapter that didn’t quite grab me, but I did rather enjoy it more than the previous chapter. In any case, this hasn’t been my favorite set in this series, but at least it appears that the alternate reality story arc is over. (3/5)
This set also includes a bonus disc of behind-the-scenes interviews that actually covers the original inception and development of the entire Gallifrey series right up to the current set.
Update 1 I am totally loving the first two parts of this. Romana vs. The daleks was a brilliant start to the series. She was totally terrifying. The 2nd chapter with future Romana was also brilliant. It had some very lovely moments between her and Leela that had been missing in the axis. I'm very sad this series has to end but it is definitely going out in style.
Full review This was just TOTALLY brilliant. It sounded totally amazing. The performances were so strong and the writing so tight. It was just wonderful to listen to. I am so sad it's ending. I think this series had just had so much to offer, particularly for female fans as it was the women who were the central characters, unlike all other Doctor Who.
The way the daleks were brought in and all the different streams of the alternate universe and the axis and the dogma virus was very good.
I felt really satisfied listening to this box set. It tied everything up beautifully. While it had the series end it ended on a level where you knew exactly what was going to happen next. The fact that it was all Narvin's fault was just perfect! I really loved that! I will think of that Every time someone mentions the Time War or I watch Genesis of the Daleks.
The cd at the end where everyone talks about making the series was just lovely and sweet and made me so sad it's all over.
On re-listening I really did NOT like Juliet Landau or her Romana, so childish and annoying! It was odd to hear such an empty Gallifrey with so few voice actors hired in. It did feel like they really weren't giving the series much of a budget for it's supposedly last story. But damn Romana and Leela are such amazing characters. So much better than any of the dull normal human girls we've been plagued with in new who.
Interesting installment to the Gallifrey series. It starts in the alternative Gallifrey with the Daleks invading. They conquer the daleks and end up on what is believed to be Gallifrey but Romana comes face to face with a future version of herself. Things get confusing and Trey wants Romana ousted so she frames her for destabilizing the Matrix but does Trey win. Here it gets confusing because Romana ends up on the original Gallifrey and Leela, K-9, Narvin and others end up in the matrix but then Romana does with the Daleks. Narvin tries to get her out by getting the Doctor to kill the Daleks on Sario but what will be the consequence?
