A Tail Like No Other #2

Pixie of Frankenstein

Rate this book
[Siren Everlasting Classic Erotic Alternative Fantasy Romance, M/M, shape-shifters, fairies, HEA] What do you do when your mate is a shape-shifting feline? Well, I don't know about you, but I emanate extra pixie dust. That's what I did when I first met Victor Frankenstein. Of course, back then I thought he was going to eat me, but that's beside the point. Currently, I'm looking forward to him eating me - in an entirely different way. Alas, I've always been somewhat small - I'm a pixie, damn it, don't laugh. Therefore, he's ten times my size. Worse, my poor mate is under a curse from an evil witch. To complete our bond, we have to embark on a quest to defeat her and make me human-sized. I suppose it could be worse. He could be changing into a slug, not a cat. At the very least, his fur makes for nice bedding. What? Don't glare at me. I have my priorities in order. I will succeed. After all, I am Larue, pixie of Frankenstein. This book is written in first-person point of view. ** A Siren Erotic Romance

Scarlet Hyacinth was born in 1986, in a Romania still struggling under the weight of the communist regime. As a young girl, she started studying the English language and fell in love with books.
After a childhood spent devouring hundreds of pages of fantasy literature, Scarlet found her calling. While at uni, she discovered with the help of a dear friend that she had a knack for writing. The rest, as they say, is history, or rather, lots of hard work and sleepless nights. Today, she can only say with a smile that nothing is impossible and that no matter what others say, you can achieve your dreams if you work hard enough.

Just as much fun as the first book, and with events and magical beings just as unlikely, the second volume tells the story of a pixie named Larue, and his mate, the scientist Victor Frankenstein. Victor is cursed though, and turns into a cat during the day, so their most important task is to try to get rid of this "affliction" of his. The quest that follows includes Kirril, the former dragon slayer, and Dini, his now pregnant dragon shifter mate. Of course the "Rainbow Brick Road" plays a role, as do several new characters more or less familiar from the fairy tales I read as a child – except they're all slightly different in this land of Camelot.

Larue is a pixie, a tiny creature of natural magic who likes to read, dreams of true love, and is determined to one day find the man he is destined to share his life with. None of the pixies he has met so far fit the bill, but Larue won't give up. Then his best friends (a dragon shifter and a rabbit shifter) get him involved in an adventure that leads him to his mate, Victor, a cursed scientist of normal human size. But Larue isn’t discouraged, he is convinced there is a way to make him human-sized and lift Victor's cures while they're at it. It turns out both are possible, but there is a price attached – isn’t there always? Not to be deterred, Larue pushes ahead and what he discovers turns out to be a much larger magical plot than he suspected.

Victor loves science, and has made several interesting inventions. One of them is m-mail (magical mail) which made me laugh. His background in science means he believes the solution to making Larue human-sized is in some machine he can construct, but when he finds out that magic may be needed, he doesn’t hesitate. After all, he has been cursed for years, so he is quite used to its presence. He is also totally devoted to his mate, never mind the difference in size, and will do anything so they can be together.

If you like the funny side of fairy tales with a strong dollop of paranormal thrown in for good measure, if you enjoy reading about mates who need to overcome some major obstacles before they can physically be together, and if you're looking for an entertaining read that might make you laugh, then you will probably like this novella. I'm already looking forward to the next one.

More whimsical follows...

Knowing what to expect from the writing style for this series was a big help in this second edition. While the (at times) gushingly romantic aspect is there, we also get a fair bit of flowing action.

My biggest compliant with this one would be the shift of POV. I personally have no problems reading first point of view BUT I don't want to have to GUESS who's head and eyes I'm in! There may have been in the middle of one chapter that the POV changed hands and then you have to read paragraph to get it (I may be mis-remembering this though)

I also felt it was a bit abrupt from revisiting what happened briefly from book one to jumping ahead to Laurie's perspective of meeting his mate. That could have flowed a little better.

A disappointing endeavor. Storyline jumps from chapter to chapter with little sense. One moment they're travelling somewhere and the next chapter an entire kidnapping is over and done with. The concept was interesting - love story between a pixie and a cat is adorable however you look at it - but the execution is horrible. Chronicles of the Shifter Directive has MUCH better writing, so either the author's ghostwriter is taking a vacation, or she's just not feeling up to the game for this one. Either way - better books out there.

Finally some back door oral! That was one thing I felt was missing from book one lol!
We learn a little more about the world of Avalon in this book. In my review of book 1 I mentioned that Avalon consisted of 3 lands but I learned that was incorrect in book 2. Seems that it actually has dozens of different lands.
I loved who happened to be Victor Frankenstein parents! I won't give it away but it's awesome!
I really do love how the fairytale characters are connected in this series! Its brilliant!

A much more entertaining followup to the series.

Much like the Mate or Meal series by the same author, I didn't really like the first book. However, I enjoyed the follow-up story much more.

It's obvious from the start that you aren't reading this book for sense or logic. This is just utterly ridiculous, whimsical fun.

This was very enchanting and enjoyable to me. I laughed at times and thought it was so cute. I loved the characters and I'm excited to read about Victor's brother, the black panther. It was a feel good read, and it amazes me how young the author is. I couldn't put a good story together if they threw pixie dust on me in a fairy tale, however,I am very content reading these great books instead.:)
