Rough Boys #2

Redemption

Rate this book
In this second story of the Rough Boys series, Abe finally finds Ty, but is he too late? Is Ty too broken to be fixed? Admitting to himself that he’s gay and in love with Abe may be the key to Ty’s salvation, but his father’s cruel abuse has conditioned him against the love of another man. And his father isn’t finished with him yet.

Dani’s faith is put to the test when he feels abandoned by Nigel. Is he brave enough to listen to his heart and put the pieces of their romance back together?

Sean falls hard for Kaeden, but the beautiful, exotic femme is not interested in a drug addict who isn’t wealthy enough to support him in the lifestyle he craves, even if Leather’s drummer has a heart of gold and superstar talent. Kaeden’s rejection could just be Sean’s ruin—and his own as well.

Publisher’s Notes: This story is the second in a series. We recommend reading Rough Boys: Runaway first. This story contains content which may be offensive to some readers: extreme violence, substance abuse, offensive language, and detailed descriptions of M/M sex. No underage sex.

Jay Vaughn lives in sunny Seattle, a clean, progressive city that is way too expensive for a writer’s income. Therefore, Jay holds down a full-time, computer-industry day job, but writing is her passion. It’s a hobby-gone-wild, so much so that her teenage kids accuse her of being an addict.

Jay carries her laptop everywhere and can often be seen combining other favorite activities with writing. For example, you can find Jay sitting at a small table in the back of the gay bar around the corner from her house, drinking wine and writing. Or waking up early while camping, dragging out the laptop, and writing. Or writing in the truck on the way to and from concerts, ski-trips, visits to relatives ... wherever.

Jay’s favorite genres are sci-fi, fantasy, and M/M erotic romance. She discovered M/M quite by accident when she was writing a traditional fantasy novel, and one of her characters ended up in an all-male prison for a bit too long. Whoops!

Find out what Jay is working on next at authorjvaughn.com, follow her on Facebook (Jay Vaughn in Seattle), or drop her a line at jayvaughn@live.com. She’d love to hear from you.

4.5 stars to this contemporary New Adult M/M romance.
In this second episode of the Rough Boys series we mostly center on one of the three main characters: Ty.

Ty is 17, homeless, and soon-to-be addicted to heroin. While on the streets, he's usually okay with just getting drunk, but his spotter disappears and his life is in even greater chaos. He can't find his friends, Dani and Kaedan, and he's sick. One rainy night he shows up at Tim's condo. Tim's a college sutdent, but mostly he's a drug dealer. He lets Ty crash for a few days, and starts to recognize that he has some latent gayness. So, in order to entice Ty into an 'arrangement', he starts giving Ty more and more heroin. Then, he wants Ty to pay for it. Ty loses his job as a grocery stocker and is completely beholden to Tim for the fix he needs. Tim's willing to exchange smack for sex. Instead of giving in, however, Ty steals what he can find and runs. Tim catches up with Ty not long after. Ty's a total mess and ripe for the picking. While Tim brutalizes Ty, Abe--who has spent months jogging the streets and parks of Heartland City looking for his lost boy--hears Ty's cries for help and Abe rushes in to the rescue. In the process he beats Tim and one of his cronies half to death.

Thereafter are a whole series of moments between Ty and Abe where Abe struggles to get Ty clean. It was such a dark time, Ty didn't even realize he'd missed his birthday. Ty struggles greatly with urges for smack, but Abe's compassion and strength bring him back from the abyss time and again. Reaching out to make amends, Ty reunites with his mother and sister, and makes good on his earlier mistakes at his old job. In fact, his boss recommends him for another job and he's hired as tech support to a grocery inventory software company. Ty has dark cravings, however, so we are always on edge that he'll let down himself, and Abe who he lives with exclusively. Ty does seek counseling for his physical and emotional abuse, which helps. Also, Ty begins to realize that he is gay--and very much attracted to Abe. Abe is in deep with Ty, but won't make any moves that will scare him off. Ty does meet with his father at a family dinner--at which time he "comes out" which is funny as he and Abe never even kissed before that. It sets off a chain reaction that lands Ty's dad in jail, however. Good on that. More stuff happens--including a foreshadowing that Tim and Ty's father will seek revenge, respectively. Also, MIT had accepted Ty before he ran away, and considering the great hurdles he's overcome they are willing to delay his enrollment--but Ty's nervous to leave Abe behind.

Other storylines that are picked up and woven in:
Dani and Nigel develop a clear and strong bond. There are some stumbles in the beginning, but it seems that they are meant for each other. Leather, Nigel and Sean's band, gets signed by a label, but they struggle with the lead singer and later when Sean trashes his car in a drugged out crash. He heads off to rehab, unaware that the boy he desires, Kaedan, is in serious trouble with his newest john. Yeah, being a rentboy can be a very dangerous profession.

The series keeps rolling forward with constant forward motion. This time the resolution isn't as clear in the story arcs--well, certainly not Kaedan's, anyway, but we know there's some hell to pay for several characters in the next book. the tension runs very high. And, the smexytimes get all the smexier. Very steamy scenes, even if Ty is still a "virgin".

I received a copy of this book via Goodreads' Don't Buy My Love program in exchange for an honest review.

In this second book of J. Vaughn’s ‘Rough Boys’ series, the author really kicked up the suspense, resulting in another winning story. While the initial book fulfilled my sweet tooth, this one served my yen for both Key Lime pie and bittersweet chocolate terrifically. Be warned, this review may contain spoilers if you have not read book one, ‘Rough Boys: Runaway’, the books must be read in sequence. That said I devoured the first book, completing it at about two o‘clock in the morning. I immediately purchased books two and three and despite the fact that I had to be at work in less than five hours, I stayed awake for another hour to read the beginning chapters of ‘Redemption’. Yeah, the series is that addictive. The three boys and their friends sort of became my friends and I had to know what happened next.

While Ty is still the buoy that keeps this series afloat, ‘Redemption’ begins with Dani and his lover Nigel, the sexy drummer of the band Leather. After some heavy drama in the last book, the two lovers finally got together and the morning after, Nigel tears himself from Dani’s side to check in for band practice. He promises to return to Dani in about three hours. Unfortunately Murphy’s Law prevails and in a wham-bam-thank you-Sam minute, these two are on the outs. Will rocker on the rise, Nigel, be able to win back heartbroken Dani a second time? Well, I sure was rooting for them, when they‘re together steam seems to rise from my Kindle.

Meanwhile Ty is still living on the streets and falls ill. Delirious and disorientated, he ends up on Tim the drug dealer’s doorstep. Tim encourages Ty to stay with him and despite Ty’s apprehension about Tim’s sadistic sidekick, Brady, Ty agrees. It doesn’t take long before Tim begins plying Ty with free drugs. Depressed and conflicted about possibly being gay—because he can’t stop thinking about Abe, the male nurse—Ty accepts the drugs. All too soon, Tim wants payment. Not money—no Tim wants Ty to sex him for drugs. Will Ty succumb to Tim? To the drugs? To the incessant inner voices that tell him he is a loser? This storyline is epic and heartbreaking. Reading the angst-ridden drama that followed I had to constantly remind myself that the title of the book is ‘Redemption’.

Kaeden manages to admit that he finds Leather musician, Sean, attractive, but refuses to have anything to do with the drug-taking rocker. Kaeden is a purist, eats healthy, and takes care of himself and can’t abide anyone who abuses themselves with drugs. When he stumbles upon Sean in the bathroom, shooting up, he is horrified. Sean quits cold turkey, but Kaeden can’t afford to care and begins accepting clients at Sally’s again. Soon Kaeden meets a client by the name of Mark who seems to be everything he is looking for in a lover. When Mark meets Dani’s approval, Kaeden uncharacteristically leaves for a Vegas weekend with him. But is Mark really all that he seems? And why can’t anyone locate Kaeden when the weekend ends?

While the above seems like it would fill the book, it barely serves as an intro. A vast number of marvelous events occur in this stimulating story, but it is quite easy to read thanks to good, solid writing. The author’s scoop-of-the-moment style had me easily and eagerly devouring page after page. Expect to have your heart leap up and down, get bounced around, and then rebound as drama and cliffhangers rule this second book. In addition to a vast amount of drama, new characters are introduced, most notably Sean’s cousin, Erin, a teenager with a love for playing rockabilly music.

This is a great series and I can’t imagine anyone who is a fan of Yaoi not loving it. Graced with seriously beautiful, uke-like boys, buff, hot, seme playboys, and detailed slice-of-the-wild-life episodes, the series is a Boys Love lover’s dream. Male/male romance fans will especially enjoy its multiple romantic pairings. There is plenty of peril, danger, and devastation courtesy of a multitude of villains, including Richard Iverson, Ty’s father. But the book is called ‘Redemption’ for a reason and when the light at the end of the tunnel shines it is scrumptious and beautiful and very befitting of that word. Of course it doesn’t shine equally on all of the boys. Expect another cliffhanger that leads to white knight romance in the third book.

Thank you, J. Vaughn, for pushing all the right buttons that had me eyes wide open, reading straight on until dawn.

The people who helped me score this book require me to tell you that I got it for free in order to review it. Not that I think that has any influence on my review.:)

This one feels more like a classic romance, as we spend most of the book watching Ty come into awareness of his sexuality and, finally, connect with Abe. While that part of the story is enjoyable, if predictable, the rest of the book suffers from uneven pacing and narration that put big events in the characters' lives (mostly Kaeden) off-screen and let one subplot reach its climax, only to disappear for two hundred pages. Characters are introduced and then vanish, and Richard, who felt like a three-dimensional antagonist in the first book, reads as a caricature in this one. I was also frustrated by the way addiction and abuse were handled by people who should know better.

And then there's the exotic other trope. The whole series makes use of it - a lot of romance does - and this series is no exception, particularly with descriptions of Tommy and Kaeden. But in this book it started to smell of latent racism. Abe is constantly referred to by his giant size, and he has no real character except for being a gentle giant with a savage side. The n-word is bandied about, and at one point the narration even called him "the black." Dear me, I hope that was a typo and the word "man" was just forgotten. (Yoshi was also called "the Japanese" at one point, yikes.) Let me be clear about my position: characters can be racists, if that's who they are. It's when I get the feeling the author doesn't realize to what extent race and ethnic identity are being fetishized only for being racial and ethnic traits that I get nervous.

That being said, I appreciated that this was mainly a story about Ty and Abe. Ty was the first character we met in the first book, and he's the most development of the three "rough boys." He didn't get to arrive at his happy ending in book one, and so he deserves it now.

Before I get to my review, let me remind you of this statement from the blurb: This story contains content which may be offensive to some readers: extreme violence, substance abuse, sexual abuse, offensive language, and detailed descriptions of M/M sex. There are some scenes in here that were just heartbreaking and yes I was crying. But there is also love and laughter. Now, that being said here I go:
You need to read Rough Boys: Runaway first as this is a series and this is the 2nd book. The story picks up where the first book ends. First we get a glimpse of Dani and Nigel, a miscommunication between the two of them and how they work it out. We get some more story about Nigel's band. We also get a little more of Kae, what he feels and doesn't feel for Sean, what happens with Yoshi, a new client named Mark and two different major traumatic events that involve Kae and Sean, separately.
So, the majority of the book is about Ty, his drug addiction, his feelings for Abe and how that plays out and of course, a major confrontation with his dad. This time, his mom and sister are more involved. Every event in this story led up to a climatic cliff hanger that is leaving me panting for the next book in this series, Rough Boys: Revenge. I am so thoroughly loving this series. I have read m/m books before, but usually stand alones. This is the first series that I have read and yes I do recommend it. If you read and loved book 1 like I did, then you definitely need to read this one. I received a copy of this book for an honest review.

I loved the book. It was such a good sequel to the first one. I am so glad that you focused a great deal on Ty and Abe. I could see Ty going downhill in the previous book and wasn't sure how he would end up.

Overall, the book had spots of tenderness and charm that were written perfectly. It also had it's moments of violence and drugs and alcohol. Everything that someone on the streets could face was written very believably. The hardness of giving up drugs, the cravings, what dealing with drug dealers could result in, everything is there. It really hit me in certain events, and I found myself really upset with what would happen with one of the characters that I have grown to love over the last two books.

On the up side, other characters found a happy ending. I am just hoping that they all end up with their perfect partner. When you have the same characters appear in every book of a series, you really start pulling for them and want everyone happy. I have my fingers crossed for the next book.

If asked if I would read this story again, I would have to say definitely. After the final book is released, I will probably start at the beginning and read all of them again. I can see this series being one that I will go back to every so often. Loved it.

This is the second story in the Rough Boys Trilogy. What an exciting, explosive, exceptional story about these young men who are trying to make their way in the world. When it seems the whole world is against them. This story continues mostly with Nigel and Dani in the beginning to solidify what happened at the end of story one.
Then we dive into the relationship between Abe and Ty. What more can Mr. Iverson do to these two wonderful young men. Just wait til you see what has happened to Ty. I don't know how he can survive so much and not lose his mind.
Then we still have to see Sean and Keaden after what happened to him, we don't know if he will stay friends with anybody. How are they going to save him?
I am completely taken over by this series, can you tell? What lovable characters she has created in these young men that you just can't help but root for. The supporting characters that follow them through are just as lovable and always there for any of them. What a terrific cast of characters these are. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS AFFORDABLE SERIES AND THIS BOOK!!!

I was given a free copy of this book by the author for an honest review.

Holy Smokes!!! Ok if you haven't read the first book in this series, Runaway, then go it they have to be read in order.

Wow, this is another of those moments I wish I knew how to put words together to truly describe a story. Again there is heavy subject matter in this book and I felt like it was handled very well. Good job Ms. Vaughn.

This book picks up right where Runaway leaves off. It was a nail-biter all the way thru for me. I don't want to give you a brief description of the story because it wouldn't be brief and I'd give the whole story away. Let's just say we find Ty in a very bad way that doesn't get better right away but he does find redemption. Dani seems to be on track to having everything he's always wanted. And Kaeden, well let's just say by the end of the story my heart broke just a little for him.

No lie I'm rushing thru this review because I told myself I couldn't start the third book, Revenge, until I completed my reviews for the first two books.

I like the sexy cover! :P

I received a free copy for an honest review.

I was glad that Ty's story took up most of the pages. He is still the most interesting character, one that seems most like a real human rather than a walking stereotype. I think his dealing with was portrayed realistically. Made for a good reading.

Unfortunately, similar critiques as to the first book in the series still stand. Although, the writing has improved and the story is much more organized than it was in the first book, it still has a juvenile feel. But it still relies on (melodramatically) predictable reactions to extreme situations. Just seems like the author tried to fling as much horrible as possible without developing the characters with as much depth.

Also, the insta-love still rules with the character love pairings pretty much as established in the first book, even if in Kaeden .

I got this book for free in exchange for an honest review through the Don't Buy Me Love program.

Rough Boys: Redemption could better be called The Story of Tye, one of the main characters in the series.

After leaving home after being physically and emotionally abused by his father, Tye looses his way in the big city. He is scared to let anyone in to his life as he struggles with his demons. He spirals further and further down till he hits bottom. While there he realizes what he has become and decides he doesn't like it or himself, so he begins his healing process. Along the way he reconnects and becomes empowered and loved.

Tye was the most interesting of the main characters in the series to me. He is damaged and complex but has the strength with a LOT of loving help to turn things around.

Is this how it might work out in real life...it could happen. The author takes a complex issue for GLBT youth and personalizes it. We all want Tye to succeed.

I cried and laugh and did all the stupid things that raised eyebrows of people around me, as I was reading this book. Everything about the story is a rollercoaster of emotions and events. I love it so much that I finished it on one sit. I love Ty's story; felt his pain and joy too. His character is quiet yet speaks so much. I know for sure that this book will appeal to those who feel such pain and joy too in life. I gotta give the author a round of applause for her extraordinary ability to create such wonderful, exciting and beautiful characters. All in all, it is a book worthy of getting praises and recognition. I still stand by the notion that this should become a movie!

Now you know when a cover of a book is this TORRID there is a chance the book is going to good. Well in this case "good" turned out to be GREAT! I sighed reading about my two favorites from the previous book Abe and Ty. The boys are back and it gets rough at times but smooth sailings eventually come. Everything is falling into place. The author delves more thoroughly into the characters lives and nothing is sugar coated. The rough road to REDEMTION is worth it. I am left satisfied.

***4.5***

There's so much happening in this series, but I'm finding them entertaining and it's keeping my interest so far. Although the book could've used another once over in editing, it's not deterring me from continuing to read.

Now I'm on to book #3 and dying to know what's going to happen next since it ended on a cliff hanger.

This one centered more around Ty and Abe... I liked how we got to get deeper into their relationship and learned how much of a PSYCHO Ty's dad is.... but it looks like at the end of the day Ty now has two people who want him dead or badly hurt... and that sucks for them

I would have like to get more of Nigel and Dani, but their relationship is going good, but is it too good too be true... hmmm. I love that Dani is now singing for the group leather, but how it happened was kind of a cope out... but still good.

but OMG poor poor Kaeden... I HATE what happened to him, and the morbid side of me was disappointed it wasn't described in detail (yes I can be sick sometimes)... but it SUCKS what happened, he's such a sweet guy. I'm glad Sean went into rehab, and seems to be better and I hope he brings back our little peacock... so off to book 3 to read the HEA for our sweet boys.

I wonder if Tommy is going to get a story... maybe with Abe's only other gay friend?

Mostly enjoyable. though I have quibbles. I don't like how addiction is handle when it comes to Ty, which makes it worse that Sean does the right thing and gets help so I know the author knows, sex and love are not going to cure addiction. Abe's heart is in the right place, but they are so unhealthy for each other. And yet I love them. Dani/Nigel just irked me at the beginning, thankfully their drama didn't last long. Sean and Kaeden.....I don't know how I feel about them. Good Riddance Taylor. Ty needs to tell his friends what Tim did so they'll quit pitying the douchebag. I need to read Revenge before I forget all the dynamics but I don't have time right now! *cries*
