Serene. She wished her life matched her name. Hopeless would have been better. Sold again. Would this nightmare ever end?
Lawson. Lonely was more like it. When you have money; things just automatically happen exactly the way you want, right? Wrong. There are some things that money can't buy.
Serene has waited for her prince charming, and he might have finally come; but in her dark world nothing is truly as it seems. Lawson wears a mask whenever he is with her, and Serene can't figure out why.
But when she does, will she love him enough to see the beauty behind the scarred beast?
I wasn't quite sure to make of this, it's different that's for sure. Serene is sold by her pimp to Lawson. Serene has no idea how Lawson will treat her. He wears a mask covering the top half of his face at all times. She knows little of anything about him. But she's glad to leave her old life behind. Lawson has purchased her companionship for a year.
Strange and atmospheric story about two lost people. Lawson is dark and brooding he has many secrets, including what he looks like behind the mask. Serene was a child/woman, she wasn't trusting like a child, but she took pleasure in kindnesses the way a child does. It was fascinating reading about these two people, and how they become closer. Not my usual sort of read, but it was one that I appreciated.
A book about a scarred drug dealer and a young prostitute he takes in to save her from her horrible life. The drug dealer wears a mask whenever he is around the girl, and only takes it off with her when it is completely dark and she can't see him.
This is one of those books that you just know could have been so much better but it is what it is. There were so many things I didn't really understand. After her horrible life I don't really feel that scars would have scared her off. Why could she only stay for a year? But, they did get their HEA but it took too long and it was pretty mushy at the end.
Moderately interesting take on Beauty and the Beast involving prostitutes and drug dealers. Formulaic, but that's pretty much what readers of the genre would be looking for. At least it's a really quick read!
Wow, if you are like me and have not lived a perfect life, I think this book will touch you. My life was no where near what Serene's life was but I could understand and share her pain. I love that she never lost her innocent qualities in spite of all she suffered. I love that two very flawed people found each other and they both became better people because of it. The book dealt with many uncomfortable realities that; if you are lucky you do not experience but see on the evening news. This is a story I feel was well told.
An abused prostitute is purchased for a year by a scarred man, who begins to make her into a lady and a Mary Sue over the course of that year. The man has quite a past of his own, but of course, twue luv and a lot of money (no matter how nefariously it is earned) conquer all
There was a strong Pretty Woman feel to this book and of course, a play on Beauty and the Beast. It was completely over the top and entirely unbelievable. Just couldn't suspend disbelief. Once all the hero's secrets were revealed, he was unsympathetic to me.
I wish this was a longer book . For it being a little shorter of a book , it rocked . I'm so bummed its over didn't want it to end . I'm guessing this is Faith Price's first book but I'm going to keep a eye out for her hopefully her next books are like this , lots of hurt and pain but with a Beauty and the beast thing going on love love love it .
This is an unusual book, it's a quick but absorbing read once I'd started I couldn't stop. The characters are all flawed and the story's a bit bizarre but I liked it anyway. I agree with the other review it would have been better to have heard more from Lawson but this books free it's also a stand alone which is nice these days, it's a quick read and I enjoyed it, so it's well worth a try.
This could have been a really great story but the author failed in the execution. Too short for this Beauty and the Beast theme, too much telling instead of showing.
you have to completely suspend belief for Scarred to work. if you do, you'll find it to be a modern interpretation of Cinderella meets the Beast. A quick and easy read. 2 3/4 stars.
