Too much negativity and brutality. Outside of that, still interesting with a decent end.

Well, it was semi-entertaining. Not the best of the best but maybe...the best of the worst. As I mentioned before, I think Lawson should develop the character of Emma. I like her and her brainy actions and connections. She'd be a wealth of stories. Demarco and Mahoney (especially) are getting old.

Washington dirty dealings.

This was the first book I read in this series. Many characters and lots of killings. Started with Atlantic city casino, daughter of well known GOP senator's, addicted to gambling and drinking. She is accused of insider trading, father wanted to be VP, he is trying to keep everything covered up. Reminded me old old Ziggy cartoon "It's not HOW FAR we get in life that matters... It's the WAY we get there that really counts when we ARRIVE."

This is the 8th book in the Joe DeMarco series by Mike Lawson. I read House Blood yesterday, and I have to say that I liked this novel better than the one I read yesterday. First off, I enjoyed the humor in this one. It was unexpected and appreciated. He also created a great story that was always in constant motion, twisting and pivoting to keep the reader engaged. I loved that. I also like his characters. They are all different and end up all being a part of the puzzle that needs to be solved.

You won't find Joe DeMarco on any Congressional organization chart. He is the fixer for John Mahoney, former Speaker of the House, but now the Minority Leader. When Mahoney's daughter, Molly, is targeted by the SEC, he sends DeMarco to take care of it. As DeMarco investigates, it becomes apparent Molly is guilty because she is a degenerate gambling addict whose credit cards are maxed out and she owes a mob-controlled casino in Atlantic City a half a million dollars. Things are not looking good. Joe has to wend his way carefully through the minefields SEC investigations and Mafia hitmen. Fortunately, Joe's father was a hitman himself, so Joe knows the territory. I always enjoy another visit with Joe.

The women in this installment were strong, good, bad, weak, sexy and smart as all get out. I loved it. I had to do this Thanksgiving Break alone and this book was completely captivating. Congressman John Mahoney is front and center dealing with a problem in his own house. Joe DeMarco is as delicious as ever. Those humorous moments are needed and so very entertaining.

The S.E.C. is abuzz when the daughter of former House Speaker Mahoney is arrested for insider trading. While only a minor issues in the scheme of things, Mohoney calls upon his ‘fixer’, Joe DeMarco, to make it go away before the next election cycle. When DeMarco begins poking around, he discovers that the insider trading is only the beginning of Molly Mahoney’s issues, which are strongly tied to the Mob. When the GOP gets wind of this, one congressman seeks to cripple Mahoney and his chances of getting back in the Speaker’s chair. DeMarco must now get to the root of the insider trading issue, and its subsequent issues, while dodging the seedy underbelly of Mob-run casinos, and get Molly away from those seeking to do her harm. Facing enemies at every turn, DeMarco must produce results, all while keeping things on the down low. Lawson returns with another thriller, full of nuances and pitfalls the reader will rave about for years to come.

With Lawson’s move to remove Mahoney from power, the stories have taken less of a direct political impact and focus more on the periphery of issues that cross the politician’s desk. DeMarco’s character remains strong and full of pep, though his abilities are sometimes hampered by the less than savory folks he must encounter to get the job done. I have come not only to enjoy Demarco’s adventures, but also like the stronger character development and personal pursuits DeMarco undertakes to make things right. The story is always adventure-packed and there is a strong political undertone. Examining the world of politics from many angles keeps Lawson’s work fresh and his fans sated.

Kudos Mr. Lawson for this novel, which entertains as much as many of the previous in the series. I am eager to see what adventures you have in store for DeMarco and how Mahoney can abuse his fixer and still get the results he wants.

Another excellent political thriller featuring Joe DeMarco, off the books fixer for a high powered Congressman. Well-plotted storyline about insider trading and the Mob, but what makes the series fun to read are the unexpected laughs along the way.

This seemed darker and more cynical than the previous entries in the series, but I was still entertained by Joe DeMarco the fixer for the now Minority Leader in the House. Listened to the audio version which was narrated by Joe Barrett who did his usual great job.

Finely convoluted mystery. Good guys are bad but displayed as such. Ending, somehow, believable because it's politics. Cussing. Well done audio-reading (with accents) by Joe Barrett.

My first DeMarco read. Engaging, heavy crimes with a light touch; fun take on mobsters and the ethics (or lack of) of congressmen. Good enough for me to want to read the other 8 in the series.

DeMarco and money

A good story with a mix of crime and money. At points it was difficult to remember who was whom. A good ending with people getting what they deserve.

Spoilers ahead:

I'm at the point where I'm comfortable with the protagonist so I just keep reading the series. Some books are good, some are meh but continuing reading is better than trying to find a better series.

This one has a bit of a convoluted plot. Mahoney's middle daughter Molly got introduced into gambling and got addicted after a $2000 win at craps in Atlantic City. She went from a normal 9-5 person to someone who maxed out their credit cards. Because the casino boss (Allen) knew who her father was he extended her credit to the tune of $100k, which she promptly lost. Doubling down, she told Allen she could get her money back by dealing in insider stock trading. Allen decided to lend her more money and added some casino money to the pot. The purchased stocks (Reston Technologies) did go up in price because of her insider knowledge (she worked there) but the SEC (agent Kizer) swooped in and seized all the money. Molly was a bit unlucky here because Reston had been on the SEC's radar due to 3 cases of insider trading before but Kizer was unable to get evidence to implicate anyone.

There was another POV here, that of Allen, but I didn't read that part because I do not like extra POVs in books.

Anyway, DeMarko comes into the picture when Molly gets into trouble and Mahoney sends him to look into it. The first thing he looks at is the previous case of Reston insider trading because he thinks he may be able to cause enough reasonable doubt to get Molly off.

This is where a second side plot comes in. 24 years ago at the University of Virginia, a student (Sweet) falls out the window and is killed. 3 other students are in the room, 2 football players (Campbell and McGrath) and a nerdy kid (Praeter). The students had been drinking but the whole thing was covered up quickly by the university because of the football players. Fast forward 24 years and Campbell is working at the HR department at Reston, McGrath is retired and Praeter is a wall street trader. All 3 are well off but their wealth does not seem to be suspicious. Molly tells DeMarko that Campbell could be the one behind the 3 cases of insider trading because she once caught Campbell taking suspiciously on the phone.

DeMarko investigates the 3 and comes to the conclusion that they were the ones behind the trading but cannot get any evidence either. Meanwhile Allen approaches Mahoney and tells him he can make things right with Molly if Mahoney helps him a little by pushing through a $100M federal funding bill for Atlantic City. Mahoney knows that if he agrees he will be on the hook forever.

This is where it becomes justice porn (which is what a lot of the DeMarko books have become). Mahoney (mainly) and Demarko figures out a deal with different parties where Allen, Campbell, McGrath, Praeter and some minor players get their just desserts while Molly avoids jail time but spends the next 3 years with UNICEF in Africa for her penitence.

This book isn't really a thriller and there isn't really any excitement. As I said, it's basically justice porn where DeMarco solves an old case (Sweet's murder), bad guys get killed and we get an inside look at the way Congress works). No one has clean hands and there's also a little bit of DeMarco's love life. I'm too vested in DeMarko's world (and more with each book) to try another series and this one is comfortable enough to continue. I'm on the next book now.

This was the most disappointing of the 8 books in the series I’ve read so far.
Per the standard formula there are two plots:
First - Senator Mahoney’s daughter Molly, "Mouse" to her dad, is the most quiet of his three daughters. She has been employed as an engineer in a company that developed a long lasting mega-battery that will make the company investors millions. Molly has a big gambling problem, owing hundreds of thousand dollars with no way out. She is accused of insider trading by the Securities and Exchange Commission. There is no doubt she’s guilty but her father, Senator John Mahoney turns to DeMarco to keep his daughter out of prison.
The second plot involves a Republican congressman from Arizona who longs to be Vice President but Democratic Senator Mahoney from Boston stands in his way. In order to save Molly Mahoney can work a deal with his adversary but if revealed it would ruin Mahoney and end his corrupt political career.
My primary complaint is that there are just too many characters to keep up with. By the end I had forgotten the names of the characters and their complicated relationships and who killed who.
The Mahoney family: John, the Senator, Mary Pat, his wife of 40 years and mother of their 3 daughters -
Maggie - Assistant District Attorney in Boston.
Molly - Chemical Engineer employed for 4 years by Reston Technology that developed a submarine battery.
Mitzy - An adventure seeker who dropped out of college who gads about the globe.
Kay Kiser - tall, beautiful, athletically built honest young Black woman works for SEC whose life mission is to root out white collar criminals who she blames for the financial ruin of her parents and their resulting deaths.
Criminals:
Indigo Gaming, Atlantic City New Jersey
Ted Allen, CEO, and his college best friend, Gregory Porter, chief accountant.
Pat McGruder, 64, 260 pounds, an asthmatic wheezer, who came in to audit the books of the casino and smells something fishy being cooked up by Ted and Gregory.
Al - a mob connected boss who owns the casino.
There are even more characters than the ones just listed.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

Plot. Joe DeMarco, a guy in his late 30s, has a law degree but cannot find a job because he is the son of a deceased mafia hitman. Joe has never been involved with the mob in any way; he's never even owned a gun. Joe gets a job working in the Capitol. Seems the Speaker of the House had an affair with Joe's aunt and she calls in a favor. Joe is a decent guy, divorced, a bit of a horn dog, lazy, and would rather be playing golf. Speaker of the House John Mahone is a demanding alcoholic, a womanizer, as crooked as all politicians, feared by everyone who knows him - except his wife - a gal everyone adores. Mahone has a few redeeming traits, like a love of the veteran. There is another character of interest. Emma is a woman of high moral standards, a retired deep black ops gal that knows everyone and everything. She hates Mahone because she knows he's a typically devious politician but treats Joe as an annoying younger brother.

The series consists of several full-length novels - each with a beginning - middle - end, meaning you don't have to start with book one, The Inside Ring - but it will help with continuity. Bribing for votes, blackmail, dirty politicians and cops from the FBI to local police, heroic war veterans, and many good guys. From the basement of the capitol to alligator swamps, the series contains a wide range of plots. Narration is fine - Scott Brick does the first two books, Joe Barrett the remainder - no issues with either.

The Joe DeMarco Series is written by Michael Lawson, each book in the area of 10 hours of listening in unabridged audiobook format, released starting in 2005 through today by Random House and Blackstone Publishing.

Entertaining.

finished 27th october 2024 good read three stars i liked it kindle library loaner joe demarco #8 enterainingg story and i've read nine of these joe demarco stories all recent since mid-october. seems to me the stories are better than the number of reviews at least for this one...was it 96 reviews? and the stories early ones anyway have been around for a number of years. most if not all of them involve washington politics, many include emma, a former d.i.a. agent that demarco asks for help, there's a recurring character, neil, who is a hacker, mahoney, at times the speaker of the house (lawson writes that mahoney is either speaker or not to reflect the reality of the house at the time of the story)...and in this one insider trading and gambling are parts of the story. have one open and ready to go another two or so on hold. will continue to read them until the supply is exhausted.

About two years ago I read my first DeMarco
book. It is now one of my favorite series. Every few months I return to read one more. I only have two more to read. After that I will be awaiting the author's newest edition.

The author has created very compelling characters who appear in each book. All have flaws but yet also have some redeeming qualities. When I return to read yet another book it's like catching up with someone I haven't seen in awhile.

The DeMarco books do not have to be read in order. I have found each book to be an enjoyable read.

Mr. Lawson hits new heights in this outing. The brutal complexity of the plot puts this story smack into noir territory, the part where the Alexandrian knots are found. Joe DeMarco gets to flit around the country and face down a hard guy or two, but the real tough people turn out to be his boss and a couple of ladies in the cast. We are also given a few lessons in how D.C. works, interesting if not elevating sidebars.

Weaker part of the series, mostly because I wanted the protagonist to fail. Evan further exploration of Demarco’s mob past doesn’t save it. Emma serves as the voice of reason, but is ignored. It makes Demarco feel like a much less likable character. We are shown an epilogue with a supposed punishment for our distressing damsel but it hardly seems to be the deserved punishment the novel promises us it is.

Harsh Justice

Bleeding hearts, save your money. This book punches hard and fast. Corrupt justice at times lets the guilty go free to do mischief once again. Corrupt justice away from the court system often dispenses punishment that fits the crime. Oh my, does it ever. Rough book, I really enjoyed the read.

Fun, interesting read

Set in the halls of political power, which I like, the story has a lot of plot twists. The number of characters can be hard to keep straight though. 4 stars for me given the somewhat convoluted resolution. But, I recommend it if you're looking for suspenseful, political intrigue.

What A Tangled Web We Weave

So many players so many characters I almost lost track. But it was a well written story with some inside information about insider trading. Some of the scenarios were a bit outlandish but they worked in the end. I enjoy Mr. Lawson’s writing and this book very much.

Huge fan of the series which you learn are not really character focused on DeMarco but on the storyline. Lawson's stories are clever and very interesting and I of course like how he weaves in Mahoney and DeMarco.

This was one of the darkest novels in the series featuring Joe DeMarco. He and the congressman must align themselves with seriously evil people to pull off the clearing of the Congressman's daughter Molly's gambling/insider trading problems. Hope DeMarco finds his moral compass again soon.

Хареса ми, най-сетне книга от серията за Джо Демарко без шпиони. Историята е обикновена и сравнително приятна. Няма елемент на мистерия или съспенс, просто върви като приказка и в един момент свършва.
