How does a witch stay safe if a killer can get through her protection spells?

Witches like Ruby and Courtney can take care of themselves. So when Courtney is murdered, Ruby’s world crashes to a halt. The only thing keeping her grounded is the return of Courtney’s brother, Cooper. He seeks revenge, but Ruby wants to help other witches stay alive. To do that, she’ll have to reunite with her old coven’s High Priest, who also happens to be her cheating ex-boyfriend.

If that wasn’t awkward enough, when the killer gets too close, Cooper temporarily moves into Ruby’s place while a police officer tails her every move. Cooper’s presence distracts Ruby as they fight their desire against their need to stay safe. Then Courtney begins to haunt Ruby’s dreams and secrets are spilled, things from Cooper’s past that could get them both killed. The killer continues to stalk Ruby and the more she discovers, the more she fears she won’t be able to keep her heart in her chest.

This book had a great story and a potentially great romance between the two main characters. However, the writing was not good. I felt bored reading most of it and conversations were very repetitive. The worst thing though was the lack of emotion or connection between characters and also between the reader and the characters. The author failed to create interesting or believable relationships between these people. For example, we were expected to understand this epic romance and break-up between Michael and Ruby, when in fact it was forgettable and boring. I literally felt nothing for the characters. It's a pity because I was expecting so much more from this book.

At A Glance
I enjoyed the read but the I was annoyed with the stupid decisions made by the main character.

The Good
If you are looking for a paranormal mystery, Witch Hearts is the book for you. The action and suspense were nonstop. I truly did not know who was behind everything till the very end, and even then there were more surprises in store for me. I had the pleasure of reading Gifted by Liz a little while ago and I now realize Liz has a way of creating atmospheres and stories that stay with you.

Ruby was one determined chick. Ruby is still nursing a broken heart over her cheating boyfriend when her best friend is murdered. She is obviously devastated. But when her best friend's brother comes home determined to find his sister's killer, Ruby has a new sense of purpose. But these witch killings go deeper than anyone expected. I think Ruby did the best she could in her situation. She didn't let herself break down enough to lose focus. She was so determined in stopping the killer and save the remaining people she cared about. I loved watching Ruby and Cooper work together because from the get-go I wanted them to get together. They had this obvious spark between them that couldn't be denied.

Cooper was a good guy who wanted to get revenge for his sister's murder. He had a very complicated and somewhat dark past that still haunted him. But when Ruby and him got together, you could tell he healed a little bit. I loved watching the awkwardness between Cooper, Ruby, and the ex-boyfriend. The tensions leapt off the page each time they were forced together. That was the best part for me.

The writing was good and the pacing was perfect. The mystery stayed a mystery until it wanted to be revealed. I loved how the paranormal aspect was so seamlessly integrated into this world, like is was normal. I think the story ended well and it overall felt satisfying.

The Bad
Over and over again Ruby made stupid decisions that put her in danger and made others worry for no reason. There are certain situations where you need to be cautious and ask for help, and a killer following you around and wanting to ripe out your heart is ONE OF THEM!!! It was like Ruby wanted to die because there is no other reason for her to make some of the decisions she did.

Even though I liked the characters, I never really fell in love with them. They all felt pretty average, nothing special.

The Snuggly
Even though the content of this book is adult, the sex is not. There are no sex scenes. Ruby and Copper were good together, but we don't really get to see too much of them being lovey-lovey since this is more of a mystery book.

Final Thoughts
I think there is a definite audience out there for Witch Hearts. The suspense was spot on and the paranormal aspect was interesting. Recommended.

Quotes
(I have no idea why both quotes are sexual, I guess my brain was in the gutter today :D)

"I want to change, be the person you want to be with. Give me a second chance."

"You say that now but I know it doesn't mean anything. Rebecca only needs to offer a blowjob and you'll be back to your old ways."

Michael blinked in surprise, opened his mouth to protest and Ruby waved her hand at him. "I'm done here."

Miranda wasted no time. "So how was it?"

Ruby busies herself with unfolding a napkin and sipping her water. "How was what?"

"You know what. The sex. Naked Cooper. Is he huge?" Miranda winked at her as she took a huge bite of her veggie on rye. Ruby almost choked.

Witch Hearts starts with a bang. I killer is on the loose hunting witches and taking their hearts. From the very first chapter we meet his latest victim Courtney.

Ruby can't believe it that her best friend is dead. When her ex tells her that she was the victim of a serial killer she decides to unmask the murderer while trying not to be his next victim. Now that Courtney's brother is back in town, old feelings returning with him too, together they will try to figure out this whole mystery.

Witch Hearts was a great mystery. You have the scary, mysterious, serial killer, witches, covens, magic and a great romance on the side. I still have to admit I didn't really connect with the main character that much. Don't know why. My favourite character was Courtney by far, too bad she died in the first chapter. Still, main character issues aside, what I loved about the book is the mystery. It had me guessing till the end. And let me tell you, everyone is a suspect. And since there is magic involved too I let my imagination go a little bit crazy and thought even the weirdest plot twist. Good to see that the mystery had a pretty exciting twist to it. Didn't dissapoint at all.

Another think I enjoyed was Cooper and Ruby together. There was great chemistry between them and Cooper was so sweet, yet had his dark side. Their romance evolved slowly but was believable and you could see the spark between them. Still, since the mystery was the main part of the story, I am glad that the romance didn't overpower it or drew much attention away from it. There was always something creept going on, dead bodies dropping, suspicious actions, it kept me on my toes.

Uh I don't mean to brag or anything (meaning I totally mean to brag or something) but I got to read this book forever ago. I mean, parts of it I read before the characters were named Ruby and Cooper.

Yeah, that's right. I know the author.

*name dropped*

(everything after this has been re-written at least a half dozen times as I tried to do this book justice without ticking off Wiccans.)

In all seriousness though, Liz had asked me to read the first chapter once a long, long time ago, and I was instantly hooked. Right from the get go this story has a dark and creepy feel, but without taking it too far so that wimps like me get wigged out.

And I get wigged out.

Seriously, it's like I walked into a damn spider's web.

Witch Hearts, however, was not flail inducing. It skated that fine line between not enough and "EW THAT'S SO GROSS I CAN NEVER SLEEP AGAIN" and does it all so well.

And in the middle of all this dark and creepy is the story of Ruby and Cooper. Two long time friends who've been struggling with a long time mutual attraction while grieving someone incredibly important to them. All while Cooper tries to overcome the demons from his past. And Ruby gets to deal with her total creep loser of an ex.

Ah, young love.

Oh, and she gets to deal with a meddlesome ghost.

I'd forgotten about the ghost.

Maybe I won't be able to sleep at night again.

Normally I shy away from books involving Wiccans. (Hence my previous "ticking off Wiccans" comment) It's not that I don't like them, or respect them, it's just I'm never sure if it's politically correct to say things like "but these Wiccans can actually do things..."

So I won't say that.

I won't even think that.

Please don't curse me...

What I will say is that Liz has an incredible voice, one that lends itself so well to supernatural mysteries. She proved it in Gifted, and again in Witch Hearts, and I can't wait to see what she does next.

I received Witch Hearts in exchange for a fair and honest review.

It’s official… Liz Long is now on my short list of authors to watch. Her characters are smart (except when they’re doing something incredibly stupid or dangerous.) The mystery and danger kept me on the edge of my seat and the interactions between the characters as well as the dialogue was realistic and natural. Witch Hearts covered some seriously dark ground, but there were still some bright spots that lightened things up just enough to keep readers from being emotionally buried in the macabre.

The premise was pretty gruesome and the fact that one of the victims was close to both Cooper and Ruby kept things on a really personal level. That was taken up a notch when Ruby became an obvious target.

I really liked Ruby, but she wasn’t perfect. She had her faults and made some really poor decisions, just like any human… talented witch or not. She did some borderline stupid stuff, but that ‘stuff’ was laced with good intentions. For the most part. Throw in a helpful ghost, a long-time mutual crush and an extremely jealous ex-boyfriend and … yeah, things got intense.

There were some serious twists, serious misplaced guilt and more than one mystery begging to be solved. Readers weren’t left hanging at the end though, which is a good thing. However, I wouldn’t object to reading more about these characters. I’m not sure what Liz Long has planned, but I can definitely see Ruby and friends have more than one adventure in their future.

With a killer on the loose and killing witches in a brutal manner, Ruby knows she needs to be careful but when the killer strikes close to home and makes his intended victim known, Ruby is thrust into a fight for her life and her love.

This is one of those books that grabs you from the very first page and won't let go. It has everything you could want in a book, and more. It has witches, magic, mystery, covens and a side of black magic. You can even tell by the cover that this isn't a fluffy magic kind of book, this is the darkly delicious kind.

I really liked Ruby. She is flawed but strong and smart. When her ex cheated on her, she left their coven because he brought the other woman into it. Now she has to rely on her ex, her best friends ghost and her new love interest to try to solve these murders before she becomes another victim.

The plot of this was really fast paced and captivating. We are brought into the action straight away and swept on an intense journey throughout. It's got so many twists that you have no choice but to suspect each character. I loved that we couldn't really tell the bad guy till the big reveal. The ending wrapped up well so I don't know if there is a sequel planned, but I sure hope to see more from these characters!

Once again, Andrea Emmes nailed the performance. She has never failed to deliver from all the books I've listened that were narrated by her. Each character is given their own voice and she brings the story alive.

First and foremost…take a good look at the cover! Creepy right? And so wonderfully done for this type of read! And while I’m at it, this is such a huge leap from Ms. Long’s Donovan Circus series! This is a dark tale of love, obsession, power and greed gone horrifically wrong.

Once again, even with the paranormal being the main focus with our MC, Ms. Long was able to lure me into this world where humans and witches co-exist. We don’t spend too much time on the human level, which honestly, is a nice break from reality. I would have liked to have spent a little more time on the background of the coven and how the bad guy fell into his role, but aside from that, this was set up wonderfully.

I had a few moments where I wanted to reach through my Kindle and slap Ruby as she walks, literally, into a dark basement (typical girl move in a horror scene, right?!) and I would have liked to have a little more steam, BUT that’s just the perverted voyeur in me.
The mystery played out beautifully. I had absolutely no idea who the bad guy was and when it was made clear who it was, I was shocked. I did not see that one coming at all. Kudos Ms. Long!
There is plenty of suspense, romance and mystery to keep you entertained.

This is a standalone. There is language, hints of sex and some gruesome murder scenes – but not graphic.

When I first read the book summary for "Witch Hearts" it sounded like a read I could truly embrace. Unfortunately, this book was basically middle of the road for me. Why? Here are my challenges with it:

1) The author description of Ruby is that she is a powerful witch; yet, no where does she write any scenes where she demonstrates anything other than simple. Additionally, Ruby is always being rescued or saved by someone. She really isn't a kickass, take no prisoners sort of girl.

2) The. romance us this book can only be described as tepid. When the two main characters hook up I found myself mumbling, "Really, it that it?" This is not YA so why didn't the author write a hot lone making scene?

3) There's nothing really new or original here other than the killer removing witches hearts. I found myself quite underwhelmed at times.

I see others have rated this book higher than me and I can only say that different readers like different things. The writing was good and the story was okay. It just was not amazing!

I thoroughly enjoyed reading Witch Hearts.

Lately I've been reading a lot of Contemporary romance and/or Paranormal Romance so this little crime thriller was a great change of pace. The author equates it to Criminal Minds and Charmed and I agree that that is spot on.

Like the witches spells created in the book this story has a dash of every genre. Plenty of paranormal elements, crime/thriller drama going on and a romantic mix is included too.

Liz has an easy effortless way of telling a story. It's not over done with flowery details and comments so it is easy to glide right through and was a quick read. Go ahead and grab yourself a copy and see if you can catch a killer!

I really like the characters and would love to see a continuing story- perhaps a crime fighting team of witches? Liz!?

I received this book for an honest review, and I almost didn't when I found out that this is a stand alone novel, but I actually found myself loving it.

It's about a serial killer who kills witches and takes their hearts for some bizarre ritual. It starts out with Ruby's best friend Courtney being kidnapped and having her heart cut out. Courtney's brother Cooper comes to town after hearing about it, and the story just keeps getting better and better and better. The only reason I didn't give it a 5 star review, is that I do wish there was more action and a little less conversation.

If you like murder mysteries, paranormal reads, hot characters, and surprise endings (that I didn't see coming), then this is the book for you! I loved the twists and turns in the story and it kept me glued to my Kindle! I look forward to reading more from this author!

Loved the story, loved the characters, loved the magic and loved the mystery!
Witch hearts was not what I expected, was even better! I just wanted to keep reading. Its a page turner all the way.
The author Liz Long knows just how much information and clues to give to not spoil the mystery and to keep it interesting. And is so well written.
Also, I really like the conection between Ruby and Courtney and how you could feel their friendship through the pages. It reminded me of my own sister.

Anyway, it was a Great book! Hopefully there'll be a second one.

I really enjoyed this book. It's one of the ones that you pick up and it keeps you hooked from beginning to end, so much so that you have to read it in one sitting. It was the perfect blend, of murder, mystery, twists, turns, romance, love, hate and of course witch craft. I would definitely recommend it.

I am very critical when it comes to reviews. There really isn't much I liked about this book at all. I think the cover was the best part. My first book about witches and I have to admit I'm not a fan. The book was predictable from start to finish. It's totally missing that extra something to set it apart.

The Unofficial Addiction Book Fan Club's Review:

About The Book:

Ruby and Courtney are witches. But now the witches are being haunted. The worst part? The hunter is another witch. How can you be safe then?
When Courtney is murdered, Ruby's world stops. She's her best friend and what you could call family and some bastard has taken her family, in a brutal way. Because Courtney was not only murdered, but they also stole her heart, literally.
With Courtney's murder, someone Ruby did not expect to see, arrives to town: Courtney's brother, Cooper. With a dark past that might have lead to his sister's death, Cooper needs to find the killer of his sister and kill him, because that would be justice.
However when the killer threatens Ruby to follow Courtney's destiny, they find themselves running from the reaper and death. But everything gets even messier when these two cannot fight their attraction for one another and when some events puts Cooper as a suspect, Ruby might decide what to do. Because she might not come out of this one alive.

Review:

Creepy, romantic, magical, mysterious and scary. Those would be my adjectives for this thrilling story. I usually avoid scary stories, and movies. Something related to not be able to sleep at night after that. However, I could not resist this book.
The story is not just catchy from the first page, but it keeps the mystery to an exasperation point where the only thing you want to know who is the damn killer. Sorry, but I was really scared and, not for my sleep, but for Ruby. The bad guy is creepy and plays with his victims, and with Ruby more. I knew from the first page that the killer must have been someone from that knew Ruby and Courtney.
What I think that keeps the reader interested in this wonderful and scary story is the mystery that carries the whole plot. And the fact that the killer is only targeting witches. Don't imagine witches like those who go around with a wand and that stuff or something like Charmed. This is a twenty first century witch, someone whose religion is the wicca and has some special talents above the others. Not everybody knows about the fact that the wiccans can indeed do magic, but some of them knows it. So when we learned that the killer did not just commit a random murder, but was a serial killer and that every victim was a member of a wiccan coven aka a witch, we knew that the suspects may be in the wiccan circle. Why we thought that? Because there's always bad and good and that means that in this story, black magic also exists.
But what we think that keeps the reader captivated and unable to stop reading is the epilogue. Just opening the book we are the witnesses of Courtney's murder. But not only that, we get to read it in first person! Yes, Book Addicts, we get to see Courtney's point of view. And I can assure you one thing: from that instant you want to know who has done such brutality, why, who's going to be next and what will happen next.
And I have to say, I liked what happened next. Not the other murders, no! But having Cooper in the story was really, really nice. And picturing Jensen Ackles, thanks to Liz, was something really appealing (If you know what I mean *wink*). I have to thank Liz to gave me a picture of the dream cast of her choice before reading the book, because I loved Cooper the characters more, If that was even possible.
I truly liked the sexual tension and the obvious attraction Ruby and Cooper had going on during the whole story. You just have to love them! Their romance is so natural and "real" that you believe it. They have always felt something for one another, but Cooper left. However he's now with Ruby and he plans to stay for a while... And they might be dead by the morning, So... Carpe Diem, my friends! And I'm not the only one that thought this, Courtney said something like this to Ruby in a dream. Yep, there's magic all over the pages in this story. Not only mystery and serial scary killers.
The main characters are well-built and they all have a defined personality. I like how noble, brave and good friend Ruby was and how she fought the killer just to try to avenge her best friend. I like Cooper because, well, picturing Jensen does something unimaginable to you, but because he was hot (yes, that helps, too), brave, good person and he wants to protect Ruby and kill the bastard that killed her sister, no matter what.
Like I mentioned before, this story must be a non-stop read. You cannot stop reading this book, because when the killer starts to hunt Ruby, everything starts to come out of control and you see Ruby's future pitch dark. And you can sense how everything is going to be messy and even more mysterious and scary. So you need to read it until the end, because, either way, you won't be able to sleep at night thinking what's going to happen and who's the killer.
I was really scared by the time I arrived at the end of the book and I was expecting to read that the bad guy jumps out of nowhere and takes Ruby and kills her every time I read some scary, creepy and exhilarating event in the story. Not to talk about the moment when he really takes Ruby.
If you love scary movies and thrillers, this is your book. But don't get me wrong, this book is not only about scary killers and crazy black witches, because Cooper and Ruby find love in all this mess and you wouldn't like to miss this. And If you want to catch the killer and know why they are doing killing witches, you need to read Witch Hearts.
We are giving Witch Hearts five gorjuss dolls and encourage you to read this paranormal, thrilling and scary mystery. Because you're going to love it as much as we do. And remember, If you're not a witch, there's nothing you have to be afraid of...

***3.25 stars***

This is my second book by this author, and I can see how her writing has progressed a great deal from this one. I still enjoyed this book though.

It starts with a bang...or a murder anyway so you are immediately invested. In truth, there were times I liked and cared more for the murder victims than the MCs though. I think this goes back to the author's style still developing - the most powerful witch MC just kinda fizzles with questionable decisions and only one show of power. However, the basics of a good story are still there and it's certainly worth the read.

If you enjoy paranormal mystery with a bit of romance, you should check this out!

Witch Hearts by Liz Long
It was creepy, there is paranormal activity, there is a mystery to solve, it has likable characters, it has romance. I found the premise interesting, the story held my interest, however the main character was so annoying; Ruby made a lot of "too stupid to live" decisions and for me that detracted from the story. Nice story to read for halloween. 3 stars.

**This book was given to me by the author in exchange for my hoenst review**

THIS WAS SUCH A GREAT BOOK!!! I don't even know where to begin.

Well, first off, this is the first PUBLISHED book by Liz that I have read. And I was NOT disappointed. I am a huge fan of paranormal and fantasy reads. I live for magic and special abilities. And Liz delivered on BOTH fronts. This is a rather scary read. Lots of mystery and many questions, but it's balanced with the perfect amount of humor and sarcastic cracks. Right off the bat, I know that if anything I was going to walk away from this both with several humorous moments.

Witch Hearts follows our main character, Ruby, on a quest to solve the murder of her best friend, Courtney. Along with Courtney's brother, Cooper, Ruby sets out to not only solve Courtney's murder, but to stop her own fate from being met in the same way.

From the synopsis alone, I was intrigued. Witch, spells, covens, magic -- I am SO there. If done well, this world can take over my entire life and never let go. And THIS was an extremely well written and excellently developed book. There are so many good things about it that I can't even pick a starting point. But let me talk about the setting.

It's basically set in an every day world where witches and humans coexist, but humans don't necessary believe witches are real. These witches engage in normal life under the guise of witchcraft being a form of religion, which to be quite honest, is a brilliant choice. I always find it fascinating when an author gives both supernatural characters and regular characters the same environment to coexist within.

The characters are FANTASTIC! Seriously, some of the best witches I've come across. And THIS is where most of my joy and love for this book lies. You can have a wonderful setting and plot, but if the characters are subpar, then I don't care about the book. That is certainly not the case with Liz's characters, Ruby, Courtney and Cooper. I loved all three of them. So much. Ruby's stubbornness, her loyalty and dedication, and her passion for her craft are so mesmerizing that even in the moments where I want to strangle her, I'm still smiling. Courtney, despite being dead, is a very prominent character throughout the book. She is definitely the yin to Ruby's yang and I loved getting to know her, which makes her demise even more heartbreaking. Then we have the charming, loyal, suave yet a tad bit hot headed Cooper, who could be on his way to becoming a favorite book boyfriend of mine. Together, these three characters really paint the picture of the Witch Heart world.

We also encounter a lot of secondary characters that aid in the plot progression and/or character development of either Ruby or Cooper. And THAT'S the beauty of how Liz wrote this story. Each character was necessary. There was never a moment in the book where I found myself asking, "Why is she/he even in this book? What do they bring to the plot or the characters?"

As the plot progresses, as the reader you find yourself trying to solve the murder right along with the characters. You beging to question everything and everyone and at one point, I definitely found myself wondering if one of the main characters was more involved than originally assumed. But Liz knew what she was doing and I appreciated it. I DID eventually guess correctly on how the book was going to end, which I LOVED that I was able to do. I even found myself talking (quitely loudly) to myself as I put the pieces together.

I seriously LOVE murder mysteries -- well written ones. Ones that keep me on my toes and keep me constantly asking questions. And this did just that.

There is definitely some romance in the book and it is PERFECT. How it forms, how it strengthens... it was so well done. I am such a sucker for a good romance subplot, but I get so nervous that one of two things will happen: that it'll take away from the main plot OR it'll be so minor that there's no point to it even being there. Neither of these things occurred. The romance is actually quite an important part of the main storyline and Liz utilitize it in a way that, to be frank, I wasn't expecting. And I LOVED it!

Seriously I could go on and on about how much I loved this book, but then I'll get repetitive.

Overall, this was an EXTREMELY fun ride to be on. It was gripping, it was emotional, it was funny, it was tense. Quite the well-rounded read. And the perfect introduction to an author I am going to be following for a long time. I am so glad that I finally got to read a Liz Long book and I look forward to reading more from her.

My Thoughts

I'll just come out and be honest upfront. I have never really been a fan of mystery novels. My anxiety always gets the best of me and I can't keep up with what's going on. OR I get super bored by how long it takes and end up not finishing the novel. However, I do love witches. When it comes to paranormal/supernatural stuff witches are my thing. I actually went on a spiel about witchcraft when I did my Dangerous Creatures review and said some stuff that is definitely applicable here! When it comes to witchcraft, I can never read enough. As much as I love Harry Potter, the wands and broomsticks kind of witchcraft doesn't do it for me. I'm all about the natural herbs and spells kind of witchcraft that's finally starting to take hold in popular culture. Thankfully Liz used that kind of witchcraft! Anyway... Not being a huge fan of mystery novels kind of scared me when starting this novel, but the witchcraft pulled me in! Long story short, I am SO glad it did!

I may not have ever cared for mysteries before, but I thoroughly enjoyed this one! From the very first page Liz had me hooked! It's been a long time since a book pulled me in like this. I seriously could not put it down. The characters were amazing and the plotline was gripping. There were very few, if any, slow periods in this 200 page thriller! And I did not guess the killer until the very end. That's rare for me. As you guys know Liz has an awesome way with words and it definitely shows here. I told her the other day via twitter that she could write and publish her grocery list and I would still find it a 5 star read!

A few of the criticisms I have read of this book have been about the lack of sexual content in this novel. It is not YA, so why no sex, they ask? Why should there be? In my opinion this story was great without the need to include any explicit sex scenes. It wouldn't have added to the story in any way (in my opinion) and it wasn't even necessary. To all those readers who serious complain about a book not having explicit sex scenes, you should be ashamed of yourself. There is an entire genre for books like that, it's called erotica. Go look there for your murder mystery if that's what your looking for. This is seriously a sore spot for me. The black out sex scenes are great plot builders that show the mounting relationships between characters without being a put-off to readers who don't want to read that. This is not the only Liz Long book to do this and I don't see a problem, at all. Honestly, I don't understand how some authors can write some of the scenes they do!

Off my soapbox and back to Witch Hearts. Magic, mystery, and a page turner that keeps you guessing until the very last page? What's not to like? This is just another example of an awesome novel filled with unique and original ideas by the Amazing Liz Long! As of now I have read all of Liz's published works and am actually really bummed out about it. Only a few months to wait until her newest upcoming story that I CANNOT wait to discuss with all my readers. It should be around just in time for Halloween! So for any readers looking for a story that's a little off the beaten path and sure to keep you entertained until the very last page, check out this 5 star read from Liz Long!

I’m a little late for the spooky time of year, but let’s take a second to admire this cover. I swear on all that is scary, this is by far one of the best covers I’ve ever seen!! Just that image alone gives me chills!!

So on with the review! Witch Hearts by Liz Long – definitely a must read if you are into witches and suspense or mystery! She really did such a terrific job with this story; I was captivated the whole way through!

It starts off with a really spooky scene, a young woman out alone faced with a mysterious man. She knows there is something wrong, and oh-my-god, she is so right. This scene totally set the tone for the book, and there were plenty of “edge of your seat” situations through the rest of the story.

But that girl isn’t our heroine. That would be Ruby. I loved Ruby! She is this very powerful witch whose best girlfriend just got murdered – and she feels like she is next. Ruby is down to Earth and very sharp. I love that she didn’t go around flaunting her powers. I’m not so sure I would have the same self-restraint ha-ha. But it’s not long before she is on the case, she wants to know what happened to Courtney, and she wants to make sure no one else goes through what Courtney suffered.

And that brings us to Cooper, Courtney’s brother. Now he was a character I really enjoyed. He left the area due to being involved in black magic and some crime. Now he is back to mourn his sister. Cooper and Ruby have always had some sparks between them, but they never really acted on them. He’s a man to be reckoned with, protective over Ruby and out for blood where Courtney is concerned.

The slight cramp in her leg made her slow to a walk. Catching her breath, she tried to loosen her left calf muscle when she heard a scuffling noise behind her. She risked a glance back and a large shadow came over her as a hulk of a man stood several feet behind her. He didn’t move to greet her. She opened her mouth to speak, but her gut screamed at her. A boulder sat heavy in her stomach; she needed to get away from him.

So then you have the suspense and mystery of it all. Who killed Courtney and the other witches? Why did they kill these women? Who is next??? The killer begins leaving messages for Ruby, and I got goosebumps! Liz Long did a great job of misdirecting suspicion and making me wonder just who did actually do such heinous things.

The characters in this story were all fantastic and very vivid. I even loved the secondary characters like Ruby’s boss, Miranda and her cheating dirt bag exboyfriend, Michael. Ok, I didn’t love him, but you know what I mean! The whole flow of the story was very smooth and I found it to be a quick and enjoyable read for sure. If you are interested in a few scary moments and a great mystery, then I definitely suggest you give Witch Hearts a try!

A pleasant surprise

This was a really fun read, which considering the subject matter—a serial killer going around stealing witch hearts—is a slightly weird statement, but I stand by it. It was a great balance of mystery and romance, with a backdrop of witchcraft which was all brought to life through its engaging and likeable characters. I really liked it. And bonus! I believe it's a stand alone, which as you probably know, are rarer than rocking horse poop these days.

The story follows Ruby, a witch who has just heard the news that her best friend Courtney (also a witch) has been found dead. Murdered. With her heart removed. It instantly raises warning bells for Ruby who knows it might be the work of a dark magick user, and when she finds out Courtney wasn't the first witch to die in this way, and that she might just be next, things get really scary really fast.

Enter Cooper, the older brother of the now dead Courtney. Someone Ruby has known through her BFF for more than 10 years, but only in the capacity of "Courtney's hot older bother who is out of bounds". As often happens, tragedy brings people together and due to Cooper's guilt over his sister's death, he is determined not to let anything happen to the last remaining link to her—Ruby. So he moves in to her apartment for protection and pretty soon, sparks are aflying.

The sexual tension was palpable between these two and I enjoyed reading the great dialogue they had. But my inner smutmonster was slightly aggravated by the fade-to-black technique. Leaving your readers at the bedroom door like that is just cruel, yo! But I understand that sexy scenes may have taken something away from the grief and companionship Cooper and Ruby shared with each other in the days after Courtney's death. So I guess I can forgive it. Sort of.

On a couple of occasions, Ruby was a little bit impetuous; putting herself in unnecessary danger. I realise sometimes heroines need to do this to move plots forward, but I always wish for a better method that just to have them running headlong into danger, because then they look like a nincompoop. But other than that, I really enjoyed Ruby. She was quietly awesome, if that makes sense. She wasn't an over-the-top smartypants type of heroine, but she was cool anyway. And Cooper sounded delicious!

I've gotta say, the ending surprised me. There was another character—I don't know if he/she was an intentional red herring, or if I was just off my game—but it turned out to be someone else entirely. So kudos for the surprise.

All in all, I really enjoyed this book and would recommend it for anyone looking for a quick and entertaining witchy read with a sweet romance sprinkled on the top

When I was first approached about reading Witch Hearts, I was a little skeptical because I was told that it was reminiscent of Criminal Minds. Stop it. Wait right there. Growing up, my dad was a forensic scientist (or criminalist). I grew up with this stuff. And I have messed up childhood science fairs to prove it! One year, I did bullet analysis and the next, blood spatter. I got some super weird looks but I thought it was cool ... now that I think about it, I wonder if my teachers thought I was homicidal ...

Anyway, I get pretty critical of books and shows having to do with crime because I know so much about this topic. So right off the bat, I was gearing myself up to pull this book apart but I just never got the chance. There weren't any problems and while the book isn't about crime solving, it's the kind of thriller that would appeal to Criminal Minds fans.

Gosh. I just don't know where to start, there are just too many good things to say. The beginning of the book is a bit haunting. You are dropped into the thoughts of a woman out for a little jog before it gets dark. She notices that she's alone and thinks of how the blonde girl running alone at night story never ends well. But then she has the same thoughts that everyone gets ... yep ... I'm talking about the "It will never happen to me" thoughts. We've all had them but they don't usually end badly for most of us. What an eerie way to start a book! I loved it!! All of that being said ... the first couple of chapters were a little slow moving for me. Looking back, I don't think that I appreciated them enough the first go round. They are really quite good.

The characters ... these characters were so well written that the author could easily go back and write a prequel and it would slide right in like it was always there. Too many times I have seen authors just not get ... it ... you know the heart and soul of a character. Then they will try and make up for it in the next novel. But in my mind, you've got one shot to hook me, the reader. I want to love or hate the characters that an author creates. I don't really care which ... I can love a character that I hate with a fiery passion. I just want the author to make me feel and this one did. I adored the heroine of Witch Hearts. I can't wait to read more novels with her ... nudge, nudge Ms. Liz Long.

I want to say more but it will spoil the surprises and believe me, there are many and they are totally worth it.

This would be a great one to read poolside this summer ... maybe there will be a follow-up book ... my hints are getting more unsubtle-er ... that was a hint on the hint, by the way. I would really like a second Witch Hearts. Soon

The very first chapter sounds like it's describing the beginning of an episode of Criminal Minds. I've always loved that show, even though I can't watch it after dark in a house by myself(I'm not a fan of scary, if you couldn't tell, haha). So to find the first chapter sounding so similar to the opening scenes of an episode I was immediately drawn in. After the first chapter, we're given third person perspective still, but it also focuses on Ruby and there's more an air of familiarity. It is still interesting, just a different style. Ruby has many good insights, one that as a reader I enjoyed reading about. It also seems as if things are playing out in front of your eyes. It doesn't take much to imagine the scenes as they would be portrayed in a TV show or movie and that appealed to me as a reader.

The supernatural elements are there in the beginning but not as obvious at first. There are small instances but they don't draw your attention in a huge way. It isn't until a little later in the book that the witchcraft begins playing a bigger part in the story. That was another thing I liked. Liz Long gives us a description of the witchcraft that she utilizes in Witch Hearts and gives small clues as to why the killer might want the hearts of witches but that's all you get. She doesn't necessarily go over every little thing that might not be necessary to the story but she does give us the necessary things to understand the book.

I couldn't figure out the murderer though, so that was well done as well. Although you do get a few inklings as to who may be involved. It was a fun ride, one that I enjoyed. I loved attempting to guess the murder and being proved wrong. It's always so fun.

Witch Hearts is a good book, one that people who like books about witchcraft and murder should read. If you've ever watched and/or loved Criminal Minds than you should look into it as well.

**I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review**

This book is something of a twisted story. It opens with the brutal murder of our heroine’s best friend, Courtney. Ruby is beside herself with grief when Courtney’s older brother, Cooper arrives to help find the killer and deliver his own revenge. On top of everything else, Ruby has to deal with her pain in the butt ex-boyfriend who keeps trying to insert himself back into her life.

While searching for Courtney’s killer, Ruby and Cooper discover that someone is targeting witches and removing their hearts. Courtney wasn’t a random murder, she was targeted. But why her? Cooper and Ruby spend the book trying to figure out who they can trust and what is going on around them. When Ruby becomes a target, things get even more serious. This person is a serious psycho.

Cooper and Ruby have an obvious history and the way they are written makes you wish they would hurry up and get it on already. You know they want to, they know they want to, but they are in denial. Working together to solve the crime of who is killing witches definitely brings them closer together and shows the reader just how much they care about each other.

I really enjoyed this book, the subject matter was interesting, the twists were unexpected, and the characters were realistic. The climax was outrageous and even though I had vaguely suspected something, it was nothing compared to what really happened.

The only thing I didn’t quite love was that the book was more human nature than paranormal if that makes any sense, but that doesn’t take away from the story, it is just my own preferences. I didn’t feel there was quite enough witchcraft type stuff in it. But that is just me, so please don’t let that keep you from reading this book. It is definitely an enjoyable read.

I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a mildly witchy book that also enjoys a good mystery.

I received Witch Hearts in exchange for an honest review.

1.5 starts
I mean Witch Hearts wasn't bad but it could have definitely been better especially the writing. Because of average writing I felt no whatsoever connection with the characters. Since I couldn't give a damn; it took me a really long time to finish this book.
The only character that I ever liked was Courtney but too bad she's dead and appeared only few times. Witch magic was downplayed and the focus was more on Ruby and the crime. I get that it's her story but more facts or legends wouldn't hurt in fact it would made the book even more interesting. Basically the story could have been much more better. And did I mention the irritating plot hole problems that I suffered. So there were this two character(Officer Marshal and Detective Philip) who were investing the crime.
Ruby speaks at first how the witches are secretive and all that stuff. Later she just practically tells the police that she practices witchcraft and the detective is so open minded that he says he doesn't care about that but only catching the killer. I mean come on! You got to freak out. That's how the normal world works!!!!!
People still freak out talking about sex openly in our country and this person is soooooo open-minded about witchcraft at the first go.

I mean make up your mind at what to do clearly from the start Ruby!
The book could have been better.Gods I hate repeating this again but the plot wasn't terrible at all. It's just plain, 2D and boring. And it irritated me the whole time I hate to spend time something knowing that it ain't going to get any better. To simply put it

Witch Hearts
by Liz C. Long
Independently Published, 2013
ISBN: 1482782324

Courtney, a witch, carried protection potions with her at all times. This did not help her when a very powerful, black witch kidnaps and murders her. The ritual that killed her involved removing her heart. She was not the first witch to die in this way. Two others before her were killed in the same manner.

Cooper, Courtney's brother, returned to town to avenge his sister's death. His past arrived with him, as his black magic history catches up to him. He must not only stay away from his past, but also protect his sister's best friend, Ruby.

Ruby is a very powerful witch with her own history. Her life turned upside down with the murder of her friend. She also vowed to avenge Courtney. She and Cooper joined with her old coven to protect the women of the coven since women are the killer's targets. First, Ruby has to deal with her emotions regarding the coven's High Priest and her former lover, Michael. Second, Cooper moved in with Ruby to keep her safe after the killer announced that she was his target. Third, she must help Cooper avoid the worst of his past.

This novel is complete with magic, ritual, and a love triangle. It is unique in that solving the crime involves teaching the police a little bit about magic, which is not included in their reports.

I recommend this novel to any adult who enjoys a good thriller/mystery. There are a few typos in the print, but they do not take away from the story. I did have to read a couple of sentences more than once to get their meaning. There is some violence, blood, and guts. I hope to soon read Liz Long's other novels.

If there is one thing that I know I can expect from Ms. Long is that when I pick up one of her books I know I can expect something different, unique and engaging.

Long convinced me with her debut novel Gifted that she could write and with Witch Hearts she kept that belief alive and kicking. This book has a little bit of something to please everyone. It is full of mystery, romance, magic and a psychotic killer on the lose that will keep you on your toes. Just when I thought I read it all pertaining to witches, Long throws in a whole new aspect and story line that really had me engrossed and I had a hard time putting it down. In fact, I had no intention of starting this one and finishing it in one day. I only wanted to read the first chapter and get a feel for the story and characters. That one chapter of course, turned in to many and before I knew it, I was done with the story.

I was pretty entertained right up until the last page. I love a good mystery and it was nice to get one with a paranormal twist that kept me guessing, where everyone is a suspect and nothing is sacred. Where you will be on the edge of your seat and sometimes have your hand over your eyes cringing in anticipation over what will happen next.

If you love witches as much as I do and want something a little different to go with those witches, then this really is something you should try.

My hat goes off to Ms. Long for creating something fun and different in the genre.

Not being a huge fan of witch theme stories, I tend to not read a lot of them. Although there are a couple I have read and loved. Like Karice Bolton's WITCH AVE series and the HOUSE OF NIGHT series. (Although I haven't read the HON series in forever.) But I can happily say that WITCH HEARTS has found a spot as a one I love. Of course, with the author being Liz Long, there was no way I could turn down the chance to read another book by her. I adored GIFTED, even though I continuously called one of the characters by the wrong name throughout my whole review. (Yes, a huge blogger nightmare.)

This book was packed to the gills with suspense, murder, and a plot that was absolutely riveting. I couldn't put my nook down from the moment I started this one. I had to know who was doing the killings and why. A few times I thought I had it all figured out only to second guess myself and think it was someone different. It really was a great mystery-murder-supernatural-romance. But be prepared to have some time on your hands to read it. Like I said, it was not one I wanted to put down and I finished it in a few hours time.

In need of a story that will have you on the edge of your seat trying to solve numerous murders? Yearning for a bit of romance while trying to solve said crimes? Well here you go. WITCH HEARTS has all that and more. Long has done it again with another supernatural thriller. WITCH HEARTS is a sure thing. Pick it up today and enjoy some great writing while solving a horrific crime.
