Cat Stevens' early 1970s music including "Tea for the Tillerman," "Teaser and the Firecat" and "Catch Bull At Four" (among others) was not just pleasing singer/songwriter pop-rock but indeed was formational in the spiritual journeys of many of us who were reared on the songs and the LPs. When he wrote "I listen to the wind, to the wind of my soul; where I'll end up well I think only God really knows" ("The Wind," 1971) he was speaking for and, perhaps, leading many of us on a quest, however haltingly.
But in 1978 with the release of "Back to Earth," Stevens (born Steven Georgiou, 1948) set aside his music to pursue his spiritual quest even more intentionally, and far from the public eye. This book, published by Motivate (Dubai, UAE) and difficult to obtain in the U.S., is a lavishly-illustrated, brief (105 pages)journal-like exploration of the spiritual journey "from Cat Stevens to Yusuf," offering for the first time in print his first-person apologetic for his faith and also for his return to music after nearly 25 years when he released An Other Cup" (an allusion to "Tea for the Tillerman" and its red-bearded character drinking a cup of tea) in 2006. Subsequently, Stevens/Yusuf has released "Roadsinger" (2009) and later this month, "Tell 'Em I'm Gone."
With the new record, a nine-city tour in support of it and now the publication of "Why I Still Carry a Guitar," this enigmatic artist is decidedly not "gone." He is alive and well and has a clear purpose for his return to music. The closing pages of "Why I Still Carry a Guitar" reveal that purpose.
Recommended to fans of Stevens' music, from "Mona Bone Jakon" to the present day, especially those who want to understand his trajectory from bearded "pop star" to the embrace and proclamation of Islam.

Jika sebelum ini bukunya yang saya baca kisahnya dari sudut pandang ketiga (From Cat Steven to Yusuf Islam), buku yang ini lebih menarik pastinya. Buku hasil nukilan beliau sendiri, kisah segar dari empunya badan. Insan yang melaluinya sendiri dari mula, jadi pasti terlalu banyak cerita yang ingin beliau kongsikan sendiri tanpa adanya sekatan dari pihak lain.
Siapa yang tidak kenal Cat Stevens ini dahulu? Lagunya mungkin tidak berapa dikenali di masa kini, namun tidak pada zaman 1970an dahulu. Jika tidak kerana kisah penghijrahannya, mungkin beliau telah diangkat sebagai antara ikon pop dari British kini. Namun syukur juga, kini beliau boleh diangkat sebagai ikon nasyid kontemporari pula 😊
Menelusuri kisah beliau ini secara tidak langsung seperti membaca sejarah perkembangan Islam di England dalam beberapa dekad ini. Di London khususnya. Bagaimana Yusuf Islam menjadi saksi masjid pertama di London dibina. Bagaimana beliau dan rakan-rakan seakidah menggembleng tenaga untuk menjalankan kerja-kerja dakwah disana. Bagaimana mereka berusaha untuk mewujudkan pendidikan kanak-kanak berteraskan Islam disana, disamping cuba mendapatkan pengiktirafan dari kerajaan British. Dan banyak lagi. Melalui kaca matanya, dapat kita teladani bahawa perjuangan menegakkan syiar Allah itu bukanlah sesuatu mudah, dikala masyarakat sekelilingnya membenci & skeptikal terhadap agama yang satu ini.
Satu lagi kisah penting dari buku ini adalah bagaimana perubahan pendirian beliau berkenaan minat & sumber rezeki lamanya, iaitu muzik. Bagaimana selepas 25 tahun beliau cuba mengkaji pelbagai sumber nas bagi meyakinkan diri beliau berkenaan isu besar ini dari sudut pandang Islam. Menarik untuk direnungkan bersama.
Dari kisahnya ini, dapatlah disimpulkan bahawa beliau ini bolehlah diibaratkan bagai satu lubang kecil di dinding yang luas. Di satu bahagian disitulah dunia barat, di bahagian yang satu lagi wujudnya dunia Islam. Dunia barat melihat Islam melalui dirinya, lubang yang kecil itu. Dan begitulah juga sebaliknya. Ini yang menjelaskan kepayahan dan dilemanya dalam menzahirkan Islam yang sebenar, satu agama kedamaian. Bukannya Islam yang media di barat sana cuba hebahkan, sebuah agama keganasan.
Apa yang pasti, tidak boleh dinafikan beliau kini masih lagi antara tokoh Muslim yang masih disegani dari dunia barat. Baik perilakunya, bermakna bakal positiflah persepsi masyarakat barat terhadap Islam. Semoga beliau terus istiqamah dalam menyebarkan syiar Islam yang satu ini.

Semasa mahu membeli buku ini, kami dinasihatkan untuk membeli versi bahasa Inggeris oleh orang kuat ITBM. Katanya lebih seronok membaca dalam versi asal. Justeru, kami beli versi bahasa Inggeris berkulit keras. Biarpun harganya lebih mahal, namun terasa puas hati bila melihat kualiti kertasnya yang tebal dengan gambar-gambar berwarna.
Membaca buku ini membuatkan kita faham mengapa setelah sekian lama Yusuf Islam tidak menyanyi dengan diiringi muzik, beliau muncul kembali dengan lagu-lagu bersama iringan muzik.
Yusuf Islam juga menjelaskan bagaimana beliau mengkaji secara mendalam ayat-ayat Al-Quran dan hadith-hadith mengenai hukum-hukum yang berkaitan dengan bidang hiburan.
Membaca buku ini membuatkan kita faham mengapa setelah sekian lama Yusuf Islam tidak menyanyi dengan diiringi muzik, beliau muncul kembali dengan lagu-lagu bersama iringan muzik.

رغم أن الكتاب لا يحوي الكثير من التفاصيل عن رحلة كات ستيفنز الغنية، إلا أن الكتاب بلا شك يعدّ نقلة نوعية في عالم النشر باللغة العربية، ويعود الفضل في ذلك لدار النشر التي أدخلت ما يمكن أن أطلق عليه New Standards.
الطباعة جاءت فاخرة من خلال اختيار نوعية الورق ونوع الخط والألوان المستخدمة، كما أن سلاسة تقسيم الفصول وقصرها واختيار الصور المناسبة لكل فصل جعلت من قراءة الكتاب نوع من أنواع الرفاهية المحببة، كما سهلت من قراءته بطريقة لم أجدها في كتاب آخر، بما يتناسب مع روح العصر الجديدة التي تتسم بالتسارع الشديد.
لم يختلف المحتوى في جودته عن جودة الطباعة والإخراج، فنقسيم الفصول جاء سلسا ومنطقيا ويدور حول فكرة محورية ومحددة من حياة الكاتب سواء كانت تعبر عن فترة زمانية أو مكانية أو نفسية أو فكرية.
الكتاب هدية رائعة لمن تحب (سواء كان عربيا أو أجنبيا)، كما أنه من ذلك النوع من الكتب الذي يصلح أن يكون ديكورا جميلا بشكله البراق ومحتواه الجميل.

Cat Stevens mendakap Islam ketika saya masih di darjah satu. Lagu-lagu beliau antara yang saya minati kerana mesej keamanan yang disulam sesuai dengan trend semasa itu. Buku ini menyelusuri perjalanan hidup beliau dalam mencari cahaya. Beliau pernah menjadi Muslim garis keras yang menolak terus muzik. Akhirnya kini Yusuf Islam memilih semula muzik untuk menyebarkan cahaya dan menjadi jambatan penghubung di antara yang beriman dan yang masih mencari cahaya.

A beautiful book and a beautiful human being. I find it extremely courageous for someone to walk a certain road and then decide to stop and think and be humble enough to decide a different road is better for them. Yusuf Islam's story is full of courage and humbleness. His journey to Islam and then his journey navigating the differences in opinion around music in Islam is inspirational. May Allah continue to bring people to Islam through his music and sincerity.

العام الماضي صدر كتاب "لماذا ما زلت أحمل غيتارا" للمغني البريطاني السابق ونجم البوب الشهير "كات ستفينز" والمعروف بعد اسلامه بـ "يوسف إسلام".
الكتاب يتحدث عن ربع قرن من التأمل، والصمت، والنظر في مقاصد الشرع، وسماحة الدين وفسحته، والذي خرج منها يوسف إسلام بالعودة للغيتار مرة أخرى ليعبر عن معتقداته وتأملاته، من خلال ما يتقنه ويجيده؛ وهو الموسيقى والغناء، إنه رأى نفسه أمام وظيفة عظيمة أنيطت به، فحمل غيتاره مؤمن بالرسالة التي سوف يقدمها للعالم، والتي سوف تساهم في نشر السلام والحب للإنسانية.
في البداية يتحدث يوسف إسلام عن بداية الحياة، والشهرة، ثم فترة الحيرة، والدخول في الإسلام، والانقطاع عن الموسيقى، لكنه لم ينقطع عن البحث يقول يوسف إسلام: "لقد كرست خمسة وعشرين عاماً للتعمق في هذا الموضوع دون كلل، ولم أستهن به قط، وقد اقتنعت أن الإسلام أجاز العمل بالموسيقى والفنون، وهناك أدلة تشير إلى الإباحة بدل التحريم.. وسأقوم بتفصيلها لا حقا في كتاب.." ويقول في موطن آخر من الكتاب:" إن أي رحلة تتخللها اكتشافات كثيرة، ولم أنقطع خلال رحلتي هذه عن التعلم، فالتعليم يغير قناعاتنا السابقة ويوسع أفاق إدراكنا، ولعله من المؤسف أن يجمد كثير من الناس أفكارهم وقناعاتهم"
ويتحدث يوسف إسلام عن أثر بعض التيارات عليه فذكر " أن التيار السلفي في مسجد لندن أخذ ينمو ويقوى" وكان موقفه من الموسيقى، ومن كل أشكال اللهو معلوم، "لكني اكتفيت بالتعرف إلى كل من يسجد لله ومبادلتهم الصداقة، دون أن ألتحق بأي مجموعة، أو أعادي أحداً في عالم الأخوة" ويقول: "لقد تقلبت في فهمي للإسلام من طور إلى طور مع مرور السنين، ولذا بقاء حالي بمستوى الإدراك نفسه الذي كنت عليه في سنة 1977م حين أعلنت الشهادة، يكون غير طبيعي.."
خلال هذا البحث يذكر يوسف إسلام أنه "في عام 2002 حدث شيء غير متوقع، وعميق في ذات الوقت، فقد فوجئت بابني محد يقتني غيتاراً.. هذا الموقف دعاني لمراجعة موقفي، لو حصل هذا الأمر من قبل لأفقدني أعصابي، وعوضاً عن ذلك وبينما كان أفراد العائلة نياماً، وفي صباح هادئ، وجدت نفسي أعزف على الغيتار، فانتابني شعور بأن هناك مهمة جديدة تنتظرني"
والحقيقة أن موقف يوسف إسلام المعارض للموسيقى والغناء تغير تدريجيا بمرور السنين لأسباب منها:
- جدية البحث والدراسة التي تناولت الموسيقى.
- استخدام الموسيقى لأهداف نبيلة، والبعد عن التأثيرات المفسدة التي قد تحملها.
- بعد الإبادة الجماعية الفظيعة التي تعرض لها مسلمو البوسنة في قلب أوروبا، أدرك يوسف إسلام أهمية الدور التحفيزي للأغنية في الحفاظ على معنويات الناس وقت المصائب.
وعن وقع هذه العودة على البعض تحدث يوسف إسلام فقال: "لقد فسر بعضهم عودتي للموسيقى تراجعاً عن نهجي، بينما أراه أنا خطوة إيجابية في مسعاي تتماشى مع طريق الهداية الذي أتبعه والذي يؤدي للسلام، وبعودتي لعالم الموسيقى أنقل رسالة معنونة لتبديد الجهل" ويقول: "حين نتصفح عدد المراسلات التي وصلت إلى مكتبنا وموقعنا، يتضح مدى ما سهمت فيه أعمالي الغنائية من مساعدة وتحفيز للناس، بما فيهم أولئك الذين يعانون الاكتئاب، وكانوا على أبواب الانتحار" إذن "لا عجب أن أسعى إلى استعمال مواهبي بهدف الوصول إلى قلوب جيل المستقبل، الجيل الذي تاه منه كثيرون وأصبح يشيح بوجهه عن الإسلام"
ويختم يوسف إسلام كتابه بقوله: "لست بصدد دعوة الآخرين إلى اتباعي، أو إلى الالتزام بما وصلت إليه في أبحاثي في هذا الكتاب، إنما أردت أن يتعمق الناس بحثاً في الآيات الدالة على الحقيقة، الآيات التي هداهم الله سبحانه وتعالى بها، فما فتئ الرسول الكريم صلى الله عليه وسلم يستحث أصحابه على طلب العون والهداية من الله واستخارته حين يجدون أنفسهم أمام أكثر من خيار" "لقد كان هدفي من الكتابة عن حياتي وتصوراتي، هو تشجيع الجميع، على قراءة الإسلام بأنفسهم، كما قمت أنا بذلك، واكتشاف ما أوحى به الله عز وجل، عبر حبيبه المصطفى محمد عليه الصلاة والسلام"

كتاب "لماذا ما زلت أحمل غيتاراً" جاء في 100 صفحة من الحجم الكبير، مزدانٌ بصور كات ستفينز/ يوسف إسلام، أخرج الكتاب بشكل رائع، وجميل، وفي طبعة فاخرة، من إصدارات دار "موتيفيت".
على الغلاف الخلفي للكتاب اختار الناشر هذه العبارة، التي تختزل رسالة يوسف إسلام وفلسفته في الأغنية التي يقدمها: "عندما لم أستطع أن أعبر بالكلمات عما يجول في خاطري، ترجمتها إلى أغنية.. الآن في جعبتي كلمات تفصح عن المزيد"

الكتاب جميل، الاسلوب والطرح والمشاعر العميقة كلها لامستني، الجدير بالذكر ان سعر الكتاب غالٍ جدا لنوعية الورق والصور الموجودة ل يوسف إسلام.
"تذكرت شيء" عندما كنت اقرأ الكتاب سافرت مع الكاتب في قصصه التي يحكيها حين دخل الاسلام واختياره الجميل والمناسب واعجبني جدا فهمه الرائع للقرءان
ونسيت عنوان الكتاب تماما؛ وحين أنتقل الى السبب من اجل حمله للجيتارا مجددا؛ لم اشعر بقناعته التامة بما يقول؛ وشعرت ببعض التردد من قبله ايضا؛ بالنسبة لي تأثير سماع الموسيقى يكون في القلب وهو شعور غيبي يستطيع الانسان فقط ان يختبر قلبه وحده، ما الذي حقا يخبرك به قلبك إتجاه امر ما؟
في نهاية الأمر اشتريت الكتاب لأنني استمتع بالاراء التي تأتي من المسلمين الذين لم يخلقوا مسلمين بل اختاروا الاسلام بنية صادقة.

“As Cat Stevens or now as Yusuf Islam, I have been put in a unique position where I have become a looking glass, through which the West can see Islam, and Muslims can see the West.”
As a convert to Islam myself, it’s great to read a story of someone else’s journey. What’s great is that it shows that a converts journey is nowhere near complete when they enter Islam, rather that is just the beginning.
And with the story of Yusuf Islam, we really get to experience that point with him.
A short read that would only take a couple of undisturbed hours to get through, I’d highly recommend it as an uplifting tale for all, even non-Muslims, to get a peek behind the curtain of a journey of one entering into Islam.

Lima bintang penuh, saya berikan selepas membaca buku ini. Menceritakan bagaimana perjalanan kerohanian Cat Steven mencari makna hidup sebagai seorang muslim, di London.
Benarlah, apabila kita membaca buku. Ia adalah kunci kepada ilmu. Dengan membaca kita membuka dan melihat dunia yang lebih luas, tanpa perlu mengembara.
Terdapat banyak persepsi negatif yang berlegar di dalam fikiran manusia akibat kurangnya ilmu pengetahuan atau hanya salah tanggapan, menyebabkan mereka terlalu cepat membuat penilaian kepada orang lain.
Ini yang dirasakan Cat Steven apabila dia mengambil keputusan untuk meninggalkan dunia muzik, wang ringgit dan kemahsyuran.
Dan apabila dia mengambil keputusan untuk muncul semula dalam dunia muzik sekali lagi.
Beberapa petikan kata-katanya di dalam buku ini :
"Saya melihat muzik sebagai kesinambungan yang positif dalam usaha saya merintis laluan ke arah keamanan, menyampaikan mesej moral, dan melenyapkan kejahilan"

Benarlah, apabila kita membaca buku. Ia adalah kunci kepada ilmu. Dengan membaca kita membuka dan melihat dunia yang lebih luas, tanpa perlu mengembara.
Terdapat banyak persepsi negatif yang berlegar di dalam fikiran manusia akibat kurangnya ilmu pengetahuan atau hanya salah tanggapan, menyebabkan mereka terlalu cepat membuat penilaian kepada orang lain.
Ini yang dirasakan Cat Steven apabila dia mengambil keputusan untuk meninggalkan dunia muzik, wang ringgit dan kemahsyuran.
Dan apabila dia mengambil keputusan untuk muncul semula dalam dunia muzik sekali lagi.

I've been searching for an ebook format of this to download for a while now but had no luck. Fortunately, I went to a book fair today where the Malaysian publishers of this book had just one copy of Why I Still Carry A Guitar left on their display and my aunt grabbed it aka bought it for the family so we could all read it so YAY for me.
I finished this in one sitting in a span of an hour and a few minutes. I've never really heard of Cat Steven's/ Yusuf Islam's music before, I might have come across it but his story has always fascinated me and I am glad I got to read his musings and positive message about faith and how it can help us improve our disposition on humanity. There is alot I took from it for my own knowledge and benefit.
I believe just like him that every individual has their own journey with faith, it may come off as strong, aggressive or preachy at first but an avid seeker of knowledge usually ends up in the right place of their path eventually. We need to make a conscious effort to focus more on ourselves instead of judging those who are new to the faith. Being patient and open minded of others and their struggle is always what attracts/encourages me to feel confident about my own personal belief when it comes to religion.

This a new book by Yusuf and is scheduled/expected to be published last Summer but for some reasons extended to be released this Fall by a well known and major publishing house in Dubai, Motivate Publishing.
The book is the gripping and often moving story of Yusuf Islam’s journey from his life as a boy experiencing the dizzying heights of music superstardom, to a man defined by his faith who chose to give up music for over a quarter of a century, but has returned to deliver his powerful message of peace to the world of music and art.

It was so nice to read Yusuf/Cat tell the story of his journey after all these years. I have so much respect for this man's passion to do good and seek the truth. He has definitely grown in his ideas too.

Keindahan aturan Tuhan telah menjadi asbab utama sosok masyhur dalam dunia muzik bertukar dari Cat Stevens kepada insan yang bernama Yusuf Islam.
Jiwa yang mentah dalam menerima ajaran dan fahaman baru membuatkan beliau sedikit ragu dalam membuat pilihan jalan. Ini kerana, Yusuf Islam adalah seorang yang sangat teliti dalam menilai keputusan yang bakal dibuat.
Coretan kisah bagaimana Cat Stevens yang berada di tengah puncak popularitas dengan serta-merta menghilang dari industri hiburan. Setelah sekian lama, hadir pula dengan membawa nama Yusuf Islam untuk menjadikan pentas sebagai medan penyebaran dakwah. Luar biasa !

Nama Cat Stevens satu nama yang cukup besar dalam dunia hiburan sekitar tahun 60-an. Kita sebagai generasi yang lahir selepasnya tidak dapat mengukur bagaimanakah besarnya nama ini, tetapi buku yang ditulis sendiri oleh Yusuf Islam membantu kita memberi gambaran kehebatan dan kegemilangan yang dirasai oleh Cat Steven sewaktu dipuncak kemasyhurannya. Namun semua itu ditinggalkan tatkala hidayah datang menyapa, dan dia terus meninggalkan dunia hiburan untuk berkecimpung dalam dakwah. Namun oleh peristiwa yang melanda umat Islam di seluruh dunia, Islamophobia di negara-negara Eropah, peperangan, kemiskinan dan kebuluran serta pelbagai isu yang melanda menyebabkan Yusuf Islam merasa perlunya dia melakukan sesuatu untuk membersihkan nama 'Islam' dalam pandangan orang bukan Islam. Dia kembali mendapatkan nasihat, melakukan kajian kendiri, membaca tulisan para ulama dan akhirnya membuat keputusan untuk kembali 'memetik gitar'. Dia kembali ke pentas hiburan namun dengan niat dan usaha untuk meredakan ketegangan dan kebencian kepada orang Islam menerusi irama dan lirik yang menenangkan. Usahanya mendapat sambutan malah menjadi ruang kepada dialog dan perbincangan yang sihat tentang Islam kepada yang bukan Islam.
Buku ini bukanlah biografi lengkap Yusuf Islam, namun ia sudah cukup memberi gambaran kepada kita mengapa dia kembali dan masih memetik gitar.

Rasa envy dengan kekuatan dan azam beliau dalam mendalami Islam. Buat diri muhasabah tentang tahap pengetahuan agama selama diri ini dilahirkan sebagai seorang penganut Islam dari kecil berbanding dengan diri beliau yang revert. Sedih dengan diri sendiri. Jarang baca autobiografi seseorang. Kagum dengan pengorbanan dan sumbangan beliau dalam membangunkan Islam di Barat. Terdapat sedikit exposure mengenai pandangan Barat kepada Islam berserta juga isu-isu yang thought provoking salah satunya mengenai muzik dan Islam.

Sebuah memoir dan autobiografi berkenaan Yusuf Islam yang bagi aku sendiri ia patut dibaca oleh yang lahir-lahir hidup sebagai seorang muslim.
Kisah pengorbanan beliau dalam berkhidmat untuk agama serta segala duka dan perit dalam menempuhi ujian sangat menyedihkan. Secara tak langsung ia akan menyebabkan kita bermuhasabah berkenaan apa erti Muslim?

This was a pretty good book that explains the title. I have always enjoyed Cat Stevens and Yusuf's music since I was a kid. I've even gotten to see him live twice; once at his first tour in 35 years, and the second was for the 50th anniversary "A Cat in the Attic" tour. So, I'm quite a fan.
This book is very well written and it challenged me in many ways to get through it. I feel, though, like the quotes that spanned a half page were similar to a magazine article format and that the book could've been shorter if there was better editing. Just not a format fan.
But the overall content is good. The best part is when Yusuf explains his own life and his personal journey through artist to student to returning to music. I really didn't care for the whole entire history lesson on Islam and who some of the people were. The Arabic vocabulary was good and I like languages, but I think that the book loses a lot of focus from the journey and becomes more of an Islamic rhetoric affair with long tangents taken between points on his journey.
Yusuf states at the end of the book though that these are intentional and he doesn't want to convert anyone, but his true purpose now is to educate people about Islam. That's great. But I thought this would be more about a man than his religion. I guess if the springboard exists, you gotta propel something, right?
There was a lot left to be desired for me as I wish it was more autobiographical with neat stories and insight into his fame or how he wrote lyrics or traveling tales. That's just my expectations being set too far from the mark though, so be warned I guess, this book will beat you over the head with Islam information, but that doesn't mean there's nothing to learn from it and apply it to your life. I'm certainly interested in reading more, but I don't see myself converting any time soon.
I'm glad Yusuf returned to music and he stresses the point he learned himself in that people shouldn't follow something just because others say so or interpret things a certain way, the path people should follow is the one that is laid out clearly for them by the Creator. I'm uncertain if a higher power exists, but I do like the message of following a clear path and I can at least apply this advice to myself and hope that I continue to follow the clear path that I choose, not the diversions that exterior factors lay out for me.

I knew the name Cat Stevens/Yusuf Islam from my mother as a pop star who converted into Islam. I have some of his songs in my mp3 player e.g. Morning Has Broken, Peace Train among few others (?). I am somehow familiar with his name & voice.
Reading this memoir is just another personal way of getting acquainted with this old singer who has a beautiful voice & fascinating views about life. If he wasn’t a muslim, I might not be interested to read about his story. I was simply curious about his hijrah, his background - before & after Islam. I wanted to know why he purposely chose Islam amidst his fame & star-studded youth.
He remained ‘behind the scene’ for almost 25 years (if I’m not mistaken). So he ‘disappeared’ from the spotlight to get to know more about Islam, to be a faithful student of this religion, this deen.
Now that he’s out again, producing songs to get his message across to the listeners, he explained in his writing the reasons why he took many years out of the scene & finally chose to return.
P/s. I had a mind-boggling conversation with Madi over whatsapp about the reality of complexities in Islam today i.e. people having different views - sometimes distorted ones. She brought up Yusuf’s name & reminded me of this book which happens to be in my 2019 to-read list. (The fact that he must take A LOT of effort to get to where he’s at right now i.e. a practising muslim who uses his talent to spread da’wah.) Though WHY I STILL CARRY A GUITAR is actually the #7 in that list, I skipped everything & started reading this instead.

Ordered as a patron request. Once he completed it, I thought I'd read it since I was familiar with Cat Stevens and his music and since I always am interested in people's spiritual journeys.
His studious approach to learning about the Islamic faith and his logical argument based on Islamic scriptures as to why music and musical instruments are not the evil some in the Islamic community consider them to be both touched me. My belief is that people of any faith need to understand their beliefs and to be able to defend them both to those of the same faith and to those of other faiths.

Really nice memoir by a key figure. His life is like a human bridge in our society from this popular culture to Islam, not such a long walk it turns out :-).
