THE AMAZING NEW VOLUME IN THE #1 BESTSELLING LEGEND OF ZERO SERIES!

In this apocalyptic addition to the #1 Bestselling Legend of ZERO series, the PlanOps Prime veteran, universal hero, and living legend Joe Dobbs has become an icon of heroism to the Congressional citizenry—but his real adventure is only just beginning. Humanity, unwillingly drafted into the alien Congress during its invasion of Earth seventy-four turns before, has done the unthinkable; building devastating genetic weapons that can kill even the oldest Dhasha with ease, planning to take the fight for its freedom to the very Regency itself. Before it can, however, the alien government discovers Humanity’s plans and retaliates swiftly, killing the experiments, destroying the labs, and reducing Earth’s technologies back to its Stone Age days to serve a Sacred Turn of penance for its sins.
…Or does it? As Joe discovers, one lab gets overlooked in the chaos of Judgment. Its leader, Twelve-A, is determined to keep his fellow experiments alive—even if it means coercing a jaded, iron-faced Congie into helping them…

After a long, twisted road, Alaskan Fury is my 15th book. The rest (aside from the first five or so ‘practice books’) spent the last 3-6 years languishing on my hard drive as I waited for some really cool editor at a big, traditional publishing house to notice me. It didn’t happen, even with a world-famous agent doing his damnedest to get my books out there.

So, because I’ve got a stubborn streak a mile wide—and some say because I’m a naïve, dumbass Alaskan—I’m striking out on my own and putting my books out there. Basically casting my dice to the Fates, and seeing what happens. If you like my books, please tell your friends. I don’t have a huge advertising team behind me, so word-of-mouth really helps.

On that note, my books never went through a copyeditor. What you see is the result of a few dedicated volunteers, all of whom have poured untold hours into the crafting of the book in your hands. They are awesome, steeped in awesome, sprinkled with awesome. Thanks, guys!

Further, I write fast. I can easily write 6 novels a year—8 if I don’t get distracted—and during those long years waiting for somebody to notice me, I was finding myself in the extremely frustrating position of watching my manuscripts pile up because traditional publishing companies can only take 1 or 2 novels by a single author a year. Keep an eye out for a bunch of new books from yours truly, as I've finally got an outlet for all that creative drive. :) Enjoy!

I have never been so excited by an author as when I first discovered Sara King's work. She is a master of character and it is especially evident in this new installment of the Zero saga. One word: SHAEL. In Shael, Ms. King has created the most beautifully poignant character I have ever read in science fiction.

Forging Zero and Zero Recall are books about aliens and space and humanity blending in as a tiny speck against the giant conglomeration that is an intergalactic Congress. Zero's Return is a book about Earth, about humans. It's about human genetic experiments learning what it means to be fully realized, it's about haggard and war-weary Congies learning to embrace their human side.

Earth has been abandoned by Congress, left to be obliterated by city-ravaging monsters. Do we still have the stuff of survival?

If you're wondering if this series is for you, stop. It is. Everyone can enjoy this series, even those who aren't traditional fans of sci-fi. No technobabble here. Just a raw, good, intense, emotional, kick-ass story.

Well, here is a new addition to the Zero epic. I stayed up late 3 nights in a row to finish it fast. The story held my attention and kept me reading. Like the others in the series, I know this book is not for everyone. The Zero books require a long review to give clues to potential readers. Some readers will love this book and others, not so much.

The writing takes you to another world. As in the previous books in the stories, we are taken to a strange world. The name of the dangerous, doomed planet we come to is called Earth. You might not like this planet. The story is full of death and destruction. The inter-galactic Congress has placed a punishment on the species known as humans, and the hammer has been dropped on Earth. Because the story takes place on Earth after a ban and isolation, we mainly read about humans, kinda. All the characters are humans, kinda, except for fierce killing dragon-like monsters dropped on the planet to punish the humans and help return humanity to the dark ages. We can recognize Earth, it is a ravaged version of our planet maybe 100 years in the future. There are characters in the book that are not your average folk. Every character brings a special talent or quirk to the test of survival that is life on the banned planet. The world of this story asks a lot of the reader and keeps raising questions about what is important in life, and why do we struggle, instead of just giving up.

This is a violent survival story. The first book in the series was military fiction. The second book was a series of mysteries and slow reveals. This book is about what each character must do to survive and either help others, or eliminate the competition. There are several bands of survivors we follow, and their adventures and movement through the dangerous towns and countryside is an ongoing drama. We readers journey along with the characters to find out what is going to happen next, and who is going to help who, and who might not be trustworthy. With each page we are immersed in the path to life and death that each character travels. If you enjoy survival challenge type fiction this book will probably work for you.

There are many interesting characters. We know Zero from the first two books. Zero is not a happy camper. Talk about having a bad year. Most of his friends have died in violent battles against the enemies of the Congress. He is burned out and miserable. Then the Congress drops the hammer on humanity. His alien friends could protect him, but he decides to return to Earth. We want to cheer for Zero, but he is not even sure there is anything worth living for. We see Rat, who is a bad ass female soldier who barely remembers her home world of Earth. She last saw Zero as somewhat of a friend in the second book, but you get the impression that if her superiors ordered her to kill Zero, she would regretfully do it. She is sent to the dying planet on a special mission. We don't spend much time with any other characters from the previous books, except for Zero's brother. For most of this book I wasn't sure if he is villain or hero. I guess Zero's brother is a complicated character. The new characters introduced in this book are special. I will let you discover them for yourself. I will just say, they are human, kinda. The relationship between characters is complex and multi-layered. People are not just friends or enemies. The relationships are complicated. I had to keep reading to see what was going to happen next with relationships or frenemies.

There are important questions for characters in the book and for readers. Don't pick up this book if you want mindless enjoyment. My criticism of the Zero series, it makes you think. I thought about identity, survival, friendship, loyalty, the value of humanity, punishment, mercy and how we live our lives. The characters in the story ask themselves if humanity is worth saving. We see the worst of human behavior and some less horrible things that humans do. Since the characters were asking the questions, I starting asking those questions of myself. What do I see in humanity that is good, and what do I see that is bad. Most of the book shows the balance on the negative side. I probably would not continue the series if I was not hopeful in an ultimate redemption for Zero and his friends. I am a happy-slappy kind of reader, mostly. There are definitely adult situations and consequences in this book. If you are a parental unit judging if your youngster should read it, check it out first for yourself. I enjoyed it and recommend it for others. I think it is good to think. We see individuals grow and develop, enemies becoming partners and strangers becoming friends. This story has interesting sub-stories embedded in it which hold the reader's attention.

I am waiting for what comes next. The book is the first part of a two part book. In the series "The Legend of ZERO" this book with its sequel will be the third book in the series. Because it is book 1 of a 2 part book, the ending is somewhat of a cliffhanger. I did not mind, while the last page snuck up on me, most storylines at least felt stable enough to wait for future resolution. I complement the author on pausing the stories in places that do not feel unsatisfying. I want to continue reading the story. I want to know what happens to Zero, Rat and Zero's brother. I want to know what the future holds for the new characters. I am curious if humanity has a future, or is Earth just doomed. I enjoyed this book and am happily awaiting the next book in the series. I would say the most likely audience is people who can enjoy complex character driven stories instead of just tech or military driven stories. This book has fighting, death and destruction, but is more focused on the characters and their interactions. I would recommend reading the previous books in the series first, especially the second book in the series. Each of the three books have a different feel, storylines and flow. Give it a try, I think you will like it, although it will mess up your sleep as you stay awake late into the night trying to finish it!

Disappointing return to Book One with it's drawn out annoying character creation. The turn toward humor was refreshing, however trying too hard, making the point wonderfully and not knowing when to stop was the sad fate of the endeavor. Why does she not know when to stop? It took me three days to finish a book that should have only taken me a day and a half because my mind would start wandering and I would go off to do something more fun like....laundry.

The first half of the book was interesting, but again... the return to sadism, though this time was better in that it included the plot and she seemed to learn to time the moments of cruelty a bit better. I believe this was due to multiple story-lines. Book One let the reader become inured to what the author delights in serving up to her readers. The torture and ghastly murder of small children have never been my thing, but at least the horror was tied to a plot. I keeps saying this, but all three books in this series needed to be edited from the 534, 575, 634 pages. I wasted so much time on repetition!

I usually don't say this in reviews, but one begins to wonder what kind of childhood the author survived. This book especially seems to be some sort of cathartic release by the author instead of a controlled delivery. Again, she doesn't seem to know when to stop and my eye was drawn out of being immersed in the story to look at the author as she seemingly loses control...and her readers. Well she has a group of fanboys that keep coming back for more, so what the heck.

Two stars for improvement in being able to carry multiple story-lines as well as giving us a glimpse of her breaking into humor quite well (if only she didn't over-do it. *sigh*) She seriously needs an editor.

I've wait too long to review this AMAZING book.

Sorry Sara, I feel like I've let you down by not reviewing this epic, sooner. Although, I've read it three times now, so hopefully that counts towards some forgiveness points. Anyone who is a fan of Sara King's writing, or the 'Legend of Zero' series, will absolutely LOVE this book. I was fortunate enough to be a Beta reader for this book, so I read it before print, and even helped Sara find an error before it went on sale, SCORE! If you haven't read any of Sara's work, know that she is on par with George R. R. Martin, in the fact that her character development is truly amazing. do yourself a favor and pick up this series.

Terrible. I stopped half way through. I was really bummed because the first two books were amazing and I wanted to continue to read about Zero's prophecies. The tortures suffered by the experiments cannot be avenged because the doctors die in the first chapter so there is no reason to put the reader through such gruesome acts of violence. The characters aren't likeable at all so there really is no reason for me to continue reading. It's a shame because I loved everything about the first 2 books. This one is a major fail.

If you haven't read this series, I urge you to give it a whirl. It's that good. I read the first book in the Zero series over a year ago and loved it. Moving, innovative, character investment, it was compelling. Then I got distracted with other books. I finally read Zero #2 a couple of weeks ago and was immediately immersed again in the magnificent universe created by Sara King. When I finished #2, I immediately read #3, then the adorable 3.5 adventures of Flea, one of the amazing characters introduced in book #2. Now I'm waiting for #4. The author has created multiple species from various far-flung corners of space and brought them all together under the auspices of an intergalactic congress. She imbues these diverse lifeforms - Jreet, Huoyt, Dasha, Baga, Ooreiki, Jahul, etc. - with myriad physical characteristics and personalities that make them relatable even in their complete alien-ness. The central protagonist, Joe Dobbs, Zero himself, is as human and flawed as any of us, but his intrinsic courage, honesty, and gritty determination to survive cast him as a natural leader. This series follows him from his capture as a young boy who learns to survive (1) to his greatness as a fighting leader (2) to his abandonment on earth (3) with multiple side characters that are fully fleshed out and fascinating. The author takes the viewpoint of each of them at various times in the story and makes each one real.

I made the mistake of starting reading this book as if it was the last book on The Legend of ZERO saga so halfway into the book I was surprised the story was not moving forward as fast as I would have liked. I panicked and after doing some research I found out that The Legend of ZERO was planned as TWO TRILOGIES and that made this book a lot more acceptable.

Zero's Return should be read as a prologue as there is some really deep character development but not much happens in the big scheme of things. The story is obviously being set up for a big crossover between Book 2 heroes (and anti-heroes) and Book 3 characters into one final epic showdown and I'm all for that, I just wish I would have known that from the beggining because I became quite nervous when I thought the book and the trilogy would end badly and abruptly.

Once again I loved how everything is presented to the reader and the story slowly unfolds. There are some big misteries left to be solved and I can't wait for the next books in line... for those who just finished reading this and crave more remember there are three more books on the same universe that are kind of spinoffs: The Moldy Dead, The Adventures of Flea and The Scientist, The Rat & The Assassin. I look forward to read those and maybe pick some other of Sara's books while I eagerly await for the next chapter in The Legend of ZERO.

This third book of this absolutely brilliant series moves in an altogether different direction. Each book in the series adds another layer to a rich tapestry. The first book, Forging Zero was a coming to age and military training boot camp story. It introduced distinct alien species - the Dasha were the bad ass villains, Huouyt shapeshifters and Oeereiki who are the non-comms in Congress army. This book establishes the legend of Zero - Joe Dobbs

The second book Zero recall brought together a fascinating interplay of different alien species in a single fighting squad. Daavin the Jreet warrior and Jerait the Huouyt assasin are unforgettable characters alongwith Flea as they are pushed into unending battles by the brilliant alien Geuji named Forgotten.

The third book is altogether different, set in a apocalyptic earth, genetically modified telepaths and telekinetics and a Jreet warrior Shael trapped in a tiny girls mind. It makes for a potent mix. I liked this third book the best.

Awesomely fun

What a fine way to see Rat as soldier and a more complete, if rigid person. The alien posing as Rat previously, with the contradiction of her death being staged and her simultaneously becoming Director of Groundforce, was bothersome. Despite that, the book slid into the new narrative without much problem. Adding Joe Dobbs' brother to the mix is a blast. Sam Slade was a piece of work in previous books and still is but now there's a look into how his mind and personality and personal history interact.

This book isn't a standalone glimpse of two minor characters but ties their stories into the main line of the series story. The nasty background of the Congress' blockade of Earth is revealed and the list of power players is growing. There are surprises and a lot of dangerous situations.

It's not as fluffy as I thought it might be, not that it would not have been fun to read. This is much more in keeping with the dark tone of the rest of the books. It's a really good story.

This has to be the best book about Joe "Zero" Dobbs so far :D
At least from the moment Joe and Shael met has made me laugh more than I can remember from reading a book. Although I feel a bit sorry for poor Shael, I'm not going to leave a spoiler for those who have not read the book yet, so you just have to read and find out what goes on between those two yourself.
Oh, and that thing between Sam, aka Ghost, aka Slade and a certain girl looks like it's going to be interesting to follow. I'm not ruining the fun by telling who, you'll find out sooner or later who his destined girl turns out to be. But let's just say he's gonna get his ass kicked ;)
I would so love to see this in a movie, I'm not sure if my imagination is good enough for this.

Ps.
Why are you reading this instead of having your nose buried in the book?

Now I'm going hunting for book 4

Another creative and thought-provoking tale in the Zero series. The beginning was a little slow while a host of new characters were introduced, but once their paths started crossing, the pace picked up significantly. It's interesting to see how the final prophecies are coming true. And it's hard to decide whether Zero's or Twelve-A's (or Slade's) approach to survival is better or more moral. I was disappointed that this installment ended where it did. It was a bit of a cliffhanger or like the middle of a grand saga that sets up for the grand finale. I was ready to jump right into the next part of the story, but it's not yet available. Very frustrating. I eagerly await its conclusion.

Great past characters (Zero, Rat, Sam), cool new one (Tyson), meh ones (pretty much the rest and specially The People). Nearly no plot whatsoever.

And that last part is what hurts this book the most. The plot is introduced but it does not go anywhere. Characters are introduced and developed over a period of time but nothing really happens.

This series has a good first book, an awesome sequel and now a mediocre third part. The characters are there the dialogue is there but the story just wasn't. I'll keep reading the series but I really hope the best days aren't over us.

Pretty dark and very incomplete, so not a book I could love. But, as always with King, very well done with those caveats. King has a way with world building and characters that is compelling, even if, for example, Shael was so convoluted that it became tedious. My preference would have been to cut the book by a third and move the story along. But I am eager to learn more about the sentinels and whatever happens next - I know her imagination and creativity won't let me down. Readability 6. Rating 6.

Yet another awesome Zero tale

This world and its characters are wonderfully complex. There are characters you’d like to murder repeatedly, characters you’d like to resurrect, and characters that just make you chuckle. I don’t want to give away too much, but you will NOT regret this series! I’m anxiously awaiting the 4th book, and am getting ready to devour several of the tales that stand between this book and volume 4.

Shift in tone, Zero now has to overcome his own legend & the PTSD of a lifetime of war. I guess instead of having to deal with those issues King puts him in another "war" as he has to return to Earth as its govt violates the treaty with Congress. This means earth is disciplined by wiping out all tech, blockaded, and all human congies are exiled back to earth. This story focuses on the 4th prophecy. Though the prior books were fantastical in the events Joe survives bordering on the miraculous, I always felt the characters were true to the rules established for the universe created. In book 3, it feels forced as the events that occur are in order to complete the prophecy. The issues are; 12A is super powerful but keeps getting fooled??, he has rules the he sometimes follows, and could help Shael easily but does not because of his rules, which he breaks as needed, Shael character's realization at the end seems too quickly resolved, Joe touches on his issues but King always gives an out that his violence & suicidal tendencies are justified, humanity has no saving graces, the Rat/Sam storyline is enjoyable but doesn't fit with Joe's since the plot should be about looking for redemption & dealing with the survivor's guilt as Sam appears to be too flippant & a straight sociopath, then there is the questions of the gypsy who gave Joe & Sam their fortunes before the Congress invaded- was she a Trith or working for the Gerjui? Why/how did the black Jreet allow the brainwashing of Shael? Is she working against the Trith too? Etc. While you can't look too closely at the other books, the level of suspension of disbelief required for book 3 is too high.

This book is good don't get me wrong it just wasn't like the others. This book is not perfectly linear and jumps story's. one Minute following zero and another Sam his genetically altered brother. Personally I dislike this style of writing. Usually it's of if done sparingly but the author seems to rely heavily on it in this book making the book seem dragged out and at the same time shorter because there were two stories instead of one. Like others have said mush of the book is used developing new characters. The characters you fell in love with in book two are all but non existent and it is slightly irritating. I also don't like that this was not a three book series and the final book. I just hope this doesn't become one of those series that never ends. I am looking forward to the next book but I hope it focuses all of its attention on the main character instead of dividing among many like this book.

A really good read...but I had some issues...

Another good book in the series. Great character development and great use of the universe the author has created by introducing a post-apocalyptic world and thrusting our main character into it. There were a few things that annoyed me in this book though. (SPOILERS)...I thought the interaction between the main character and the main “minder” got boring after a while. Also, the fact that the human race, according to the author, is nothing but a bunch of mindless brutes, sadists, and rapists.

If the author reveals something in book 4 that changes my mind about book 3...then I will come back and change my stars to 4...but I’m going to put 3 stars for now. Still a good read...but these two things I found to be too annoying.

9/10: Fantastic, left me wanting more.

“Just a dumb ol’ Congie waiting to die.”

Minor grump: I almost marked this one down on the NBRS because for the first quarter of the book there were no two chapters from the same POV. Very choppy for the reader. Thankfully, it got better from there, and we got to spend time with favourites again.

Still love Joe. Wish there'd been more stories in between (we've jumped forward in time here) but there is no denying that this series is pretty darn awesome.

Hopefully, there'll be more.

Really hope that this is build up to the end and Zeros conclusion lives up to the first two books. This one was really hard to read, especially the part after zero meets the minders and aimlessly wanders to nowhere doing absolutely nothing for the story.

Hopefully the Author won’t disappoint with the next one since the first two were really good!
