Bonnie Ferrante is a hybrid writer (publishing traditionally and self-publishing). She was a grade school teacher for thirty-three years, ten as teacher-librarian. She has received three OAC grants for her writing. She has recently entered the field of self-publishing and is greatly enjoying illustrating her own picture books although this becomes more difficult as her Parkinson's Disease progresses.
Bonnie also has a Youtube site.
"Welcome parents, teachers, and kids to my safe youtube site. Kids can listen to a book being read or a story being told, learn about words and numbers, and sing along. Adults can watch a book trailer and find new ways to teach your children using inexpensive materials, active learning, and the outdoors."

These stories will move you at times and at other times they'll make you to work to finish them, plumped up a bit in certain respects with too much filler. Ferrante does have a wonderful way with description and building an emotional line, but the short stories sometimes drift around, making you search for the main thread of the narrative. I did thoroughly enjoy the collection, even with their more depressive bent, but I felt there was a forced attempt at creating a more literary feel than was necessary. I want to say these are slices-of-life tales, but a few seemed a little too unbelievable. Regardless, they are very well-written stories that take a look at individuals whose tragic-turned lives give them a new outlook on the world around them (with the exception of the last story, which seems disconnected from all the others.)

These stories were very well-written. Dialogue, descriptions, all of that sort of stuff was very well done. Unfortunately though, the stories weren’t very good in my opinion. Some were so overwhelmingly depressing that I had to force myself to push through them . . . I think even stories that are designed to be dark should have a moment or two of relief in them to keep the reader interested. Others were far, far too short and felt more like they were a single scene from something larger. Also, some of the characters were a bit unbelievable, acting in ways that seemed to push the plot the direction the author wanted it to go instead of in ways that were logical based on what they’d done before.

I received a free copy in exchange for an honest and unbiased review.

Not much I can say about this book; the short stories (obviously ARE short) have a common trait with giving you displeasure during the story, but leaving a pleasing ending to each. Similarities with the aspects and characters allows you to connect them all together.

Nothing unique, but there was nothing bad about this story from a neutral point of view. From a personal view however, I did enjoy the reference with a wonderful film, "A street car named Desire", that I enjoy a lot, giving you an idea of the setting by time period.
