I’d like to thank Netgalley, Convergent Books, and Christy Bauman for an early release copy of this book in exchange for an honest review, all thoughts and opinions are my own.

“Women’s bodies are telling us a story”*
A rite of passage is a ceremony to mark the gains and losses in life. The goodness, and the pain. Christy offers an invitation in this book to engage every woman’s natural rites throughout her life. Birth, initiation, exile, creating, intuition, and legacy. Each one is a necessary and human part of our journey, and indeed if engaged well offers so much space for healing and wholeness.
When I read Christy’s book The Theology of the Womb it was the start of a journey for me, and this book offers so much wisdom, compassion, and clarity. It feels like a hand to hold, and a wise companion for the journey of life.
I really believe we have so much to learn and engage and repent of surrounding the way women have been historically relegated in church settings, and this book offered my heart so much healing. I know I will return many times more to process, mark my own rites, and pursue healing and wholeness.
Grateful to be on the launching team for this book, truly a necessary read that brought tears many times. Grateful for Christy’s vulnerability and wisdom.

This book has some helpful ideas and frameworks for any woman, as it follows a chronological format based on aging. It was kind of basic though and filled with too many personal anecdotes in addition to awkward/tone-deaf virtue signaling. I thought it would be most useful for a young woman looking for meaning outside of the boundaries of traditional Christianity. You'd get better and deeper content reading Pinkola-Estes.

A friend gave this to me and I’m so glad she did. Grateful for the language this book offers for a women’s experience. If you’re not religious, I still think it can be impactful for you; however, the assumption is that the audience shares a similar Christian worldview. The template rites are extremely helpful and I’m excited to incorporate them in my life moving forward! Thanks, Christy.

I turned 4O last year. My birthday happened to coincide with entering menopause, my oldest daughter getting married, and the failure of my second marriage. The day of my birthday came and the weight of my losses, my failures and my circumstances felt heavy.

When I got home from work that day, a friend had left a huge birthday balloon on the doorstep of my apartment “4O”. She left a gift of flowers and a card. She, being only a few years older, wished me hope, joy and fulfillment that she had experienced in her 40th year.

I discovered she was right.

Her Rites reminds me of my friend’s wise words: aging is a gift, a milestone to be honored. We live in a culture that does not value women and certainly does not value aging women - but we have so much to offer in our sage years. Yes, we have youth and beauty and fertility to carry us through the chaos of our maiden and mothering years - but the crone - this is something extra special. We have experienced so much and that in of itself is priceless.

I’m moving towards my 41st birthday now, walking confidently, wild and free. I never thought it would be this way. And my friend and I, we are going to read this book together next. I’m looking forward to paying homage to our experiences and our bodies, we, like every woman, owe this to ourselves as we honor our imago dei.

For a variety of reasons, including simply because I've been invited to do so, I often find myself reading titles that are being marketed specifically toward women.

Christy Angelle Bauman's "Her Rites: A Sacred Journey for the Mind, Body, and Soul" is the latest book that as I read it I found myself very aware that the book contains a culture I simply can't understand because for me it's not a lived culture.

I can express honest curiosity. I can accept. I can embrace. I can celebrate. I can seek to understand, but I will never fully understand the rites of passage for a woman including birth, initiation, exile, creation, intuition, and legacy.

I can, and did, find common ground. As an adult male who grew up with significant disabilities, I have long found myself identifying more with the culture of women than the culture of men. I have long found connections between what it means to be a woman and what it means to grow up disabled. I'm absolutely certain it's not the same for all people with disabilities, but in my world the connection is very tangible and very real. I don't identify as a woman, but I do very much feel a connection to the female experience and my life has been undeniably made richer and stronger by the strong women in my life from birth to this very moment.

"Her Rites" starts with the basic idea that every woman desires wholeness - to be at home in her body, her relationships, and her life. "Her Rites" also starts with the basic idea that women too often feel that they don't belong to themselves and the path to that wholeness is challenging, often even culturally challenged, and women often know it is not a path to be traveled alone.

Bauman, actually Dr. Christy Angelle Bauman, is an author, teacher, and therapist who has dedicated her professional life to guiding women on this path to meaning and joy.

In "Her Rites," Dr. Bauman invites us into her office and through six transformative exercises offering a deep dive into the most common rites of passage in a woman's life. These rites encourage and empower a woman to find wholeness and self-knowledge. Dr. Bauman includes ritual templates and exercises that she uses in her practice and has seen be successful in supporting women to come home to themselves and receive the gift of flourishing.

While I undeniably found areas of common ground in "Her Rites," there's also no doubt that this is a book that will be most embraced by its intended audience of women. While women of faith will likely most connect to "Her Rites," there's a universality to the rites contained within that gives the book considerable crossover appeal.

"Her Rites" is a sacred journey indeed, an invitation to wholeness and wellness and joy for the mind, body, and soul of women.

I received this book for free. This does not impact my review in any shape or form.

Her Rites: A Sacred Journey for the Mind, Body, and Soul by Christy Angelle Bauman is a spiritual self-help book about women reclaiming their identities and learning how to find meaning in life’s harshness. The book is separated into six parts. Rite of Birth analyzes how attachment styles in the past may affect relationships with one’s self and others. Rite of Initiation showcases how a woman’s fall from innocence begets her journey to self-discovery. Rite of Exile acknowledges the grief and loneliness that a woman goes through in order to truly find herself, and Rite of Creating celebrates a woman’s skills and how they build themselves and their community up by using those skills. Rite of Intuition treasures a woman’s leadership skills, regardless if they’re recognized by their community, and Rite of Legacy describes what a woman leaves behind when she is gone, and what legacies lie within her.

A lot of times, when I read about women empowerment and women’s spirituality, it’s in the framework of paganism or witchcraft. In this case, Bauman takes a traditionally patriarchal religion and turns it into an inclusive safe space that women can enjoy. A lot of times women are left out of the church completely, whether it be through the invalidation of their feelings or the undermining of their roles as leaders (i.e. mothers, teachers, pastors, ect.). Moreover, I meet a lot of women who carry religious trauma, and while many my age still identify as Christians, they’ve turned their back on the church to find something more meaningful. And I’m happy to say that this book gives such meaning. It reminds me of the likes of Danielle Dulsky and Clarissa Pinkola Estes who have found lessons for women in their own lives and stories, whether it be through the fairytales they’ve studied or the people they’ve witnessed to.

It certainly helps that she has exercises at the end of the book. Although many women will enjoy the workshops that the book presents, I feel that men may get the same gratification. This book offers a feminist and Jungian viewpoint of the female experience and, in my opinion, can be something that men may gain insight from. Something that I definitely will be doing with my clients is more inner child work; interchanging between dominant and non-dominant hands to symbolize a conversation between your adult self and your inner child was something I could never think of. To say that Bauman had inspired me to look more into the theories is wonderful, to say the least.

“Listening to our bodies is usually costly, especially for the woman, for the female body is loud and complex.”

Tell me about it. Haha.

I appreciated this deep work. This isn’t a book to just skim through, but one to embrace as a friend and ally. In these pages you’ll find words that articulate things you’ve never been able to say before and the courage to be known.

I’ve read other books Christy has written and can confidently say that this book is like walking into the wardrobe and finding Narnia - except the hidden world is one where you learn how to answer the mysteries of your own story, and of those who’ve gone before you.

In Christy’s book she writes, “Time and time again, a woman negotiated between her body’s needs and the needs of the other. It may be with her husband, partner, children, grandchildren and others close to her — maybe exercise, food, self care, work, school, and duties. There is always an internal balancing act that women embody differently from men.”

I loved the way that reading this book made me feel connected to women all around me — older, younger, my peers. It’s precious to read an “inner-transformation” book that leaves you not just inwardly met, but also encouraged to dive head first into more intergenerational relationships.

Pick this one up. Take it with you. In it, you’ll find a kind friend.

**Book Review: Her Rites by Christy Angels Bauman**

Christy Angels Bauman's *Her Rites* is a beautifully crafted exploration of womanhood that resonates deeply with readers at any stage of their journey. This sweet and reflective book invites us to walk alongside Bauman as she shares her personal story, illuminating the rites that define our experiences as women.

Bauman skillfully intertwines her narrative with practical examples and ideas, encouraging readers to make their own journeys personal and meaningful. Each chapter serves as a rite of passage, guiding us through the joys and challenges inherent in womanhood. Her insights into the creative power women hold—with our words, hands, and bodies—are both empowering and enlightening.

What struck me most about this book is how it fosters a deeper understanding of our identity as women of God. Bauman's perspective is one of glory and celebration, revealing the beauty in our shared experiences and the cycles we navigate throughout life. After reading *Her Rites*, I found a renewed delight in my own womanhood and a greater appreciation for the rites that shape us.

This book is a treasure for anyone looking to reflect on their journey or seeking to embrace the richness of being a woman. I highly recommend it for its warmth, wisdom, and the sense of community it fosters among women.

Christy Angelle Bauman writes, “Growing up in church I was taught to run away as fast as I could from two sins: sexuality and mystics.” Her Rites is a happy consequence of Dr. Bauman’s decision to stop running. This beautifully written book presents significant passages – “rites” – in her life as a woman raised in a white patriarchal conservative Christian culture. Plumbing depths of her own experiences and those of many women with whom she has worked in therapy, Bauman names six rites – birth, initiation, exile, creation, intuition, legacy. Each offers women opportunities to burst out of psychospiritual bondage to the false senses of self that white Christian women so often have been conditioned by religion and condemned to accept as right and normal. In this sense, Her Rites warrants a place in the growing corpus of empowering feminist theological, psychological, and spiritual resources. In this threatening moment, when America is trying to hurl women back into sexual captivity via bans on abortion and control of our reproductive health, Dr. Bauman’s book comes to the rescue. Read wisely, it is a call not only to ritualize our passages but moreover to struggle politically for the freedom which Her Rites espouses.

Author, teacher, and therapist Dr. Christy Angelle Bauman shares six rites women can experience as they discover and claim their identity and purpose. As she notes, "Your best self is your integrated self."
The six rites include birthright, initiation, exile, creating, initiation, and legacy.
I found much wisdom in this book. My favorite insights included the realization that I belong to my body. I embraced my scars as I read these pages, and I learned to value my body that is created to speak through my voice, sexuality, and bleeding.
And I followed her prompt and wrote out my birth story while analyzing the dynamics of my conception, which brought healing.
I also found healing when I realized I come from a line of women who learned how to make their own money because men weren’t trustworthy. I was taught self-sufficiency under the guise of independence, but my true motivation was fear of abandonment or betrayal. Wow!
As the author reminded me, "Remember who you are, that you come from a long line of strong women, and you are loved."

Our culture has a lost an understanding rights of passage and recognizing stages we go all through. This book addresses the physical and spiritual stages of life for women and the importance of doing things as a community, with other women, on your own, etc. It talks about our inner soul, working through things, being healed, honor and respect by marking these rites of passage. The guides for each rite/chapter at the back of the book help you think through and process these different rites of passage of birth, initiation, exile, creation, intuition, and legacy. The Bible talks about birthright with sons, but what is a woman's birthright? What do these stages of life mean spiritually for us? This book is a guide for that heart work. ❤️

The care, the knowing, the stories that show up on the pages of Her Rites are a gentle yet subversive guide for women. Her Rites is Christy opening up her therapist office and giving us all get a seat at the couch to heal. The book is also complete with workbooks/action steps for each rite, helping women to wrestle and find their own voice in each of these stops along the way. These guides will be a treasure for years to come as I move in and out of these stages. The album that Christy co-wrote with Sarah Siskind to accompany the book is stunning. Let the music and the words of this book wash over you as you take this sacred journey.

Dr. Bauman reveals years of experience as a therapist in synthesis with her own life through blended anecdotes and research. The primary possibility she invites the reader to consider is that mindfully engaging our RITES of passage will bring profound integration and meaning to existence in this present wild moment. The Marking Guides are a thoughtful and kind starting place, that is a tremendous gift to a reader who may recognize the RITE has occurred, but does not have a clue where to begin celebrating/marking it for herself. Read and engage!

I was able to find identity and connection in every Rite so beautifully articulated in this book. I felt like I better understood and appreciated my grandmothers, my own mom, my daughters and extended female family members and friends. The sense of sacred community reduced my fear of the unknown phases of life ahead for myself and loved ones. The imagery and songs that accompany this work are a testament to the vision and giftedness of the author.

This book was a beautiful way to honor the way of women. Throughout our lives we rush through the days taking care of everyone but ourselves. We pass each moment without looking around at where we are, where we have been, and where we are going. This book makes one stop and look at their journey and find the joy of it.

What an absolutely stunning book that’s very needed! Dr Christy Bauman’s work answered questions I had been asking for years, or some I didn’t even realize I’d been needing answers to. Walking readers through the six rites that every woman takes, she also guides you in explorations of your own story. I’ve had helpful revelations from each story and have shifted things in my own life because of each rite. Hard to pick a favorite, but Rite of Intuition or Creating might be it!
Also! Do RUN and download the album she created with Sarah Siskind. You can listen to a song about each rite, which is a whole other experience!!
