I’m so glad he loved Hong Kong too. So sad Hong Kong and Macau he had experienced , and those I had known and loved ( later on in the 90s when I used to study Cantonese for three years) are no more. Major nostalgia.
Travelogue isn’t my first go to genre. If this book isn’t highly recommended by a friend, I would have missed this series. It is a bit plain, not the up and down rollercoaster ride kind of adventures, but it was surprisingly a page turner.
Vibrant, dream-like depiction of Hong Kong beautifully represents the excitement at the beginning of a journey. Withered and catatonic mental state of the protagonist in the very beginning of the story in Delhi, which is a stark contrast to the excitement in Hong Kong, is effective and calculated. Protagonist's boyish arrogance also makes the story honest and realistic.
