About the author

Vaikom Muhammad Basheer is regarded as one of the prominent literary figures ever existed in india. He was a legend in Kerala.

He was one of those outspoken figures who revolutionized Malayalam Literature, and Thus the World Literature itself with his dauntless sarcasm, satire, and black humor.

Often referred to as the Beypore Sultan (the king of Beypore) by the colleagues, he was one of the prominent figures behind the artistical, economical, and social reformation of the Kerala Culture.

His novel Shabdangal (The Voices) was once banned due to its echo that cyclonized a once feudalistic society.

He is also regarded as the translators nightmare. This is mainly because of the colloquial touch he added to his writings, which ethnically speaking would lose its humor and meaning when translated to other languages.

He was the sufi among the writers and and the greatest exponent of Gandhian Thought.

He was awarded with Padma Sri in 1982 for his overall contributions to nation as a freedom fighter, writer, and as a political activist.

This is the story of three friends brilliantly crafted by Basheer. He tells the story of Pappachan, Pauly, and Prem Raghu.

What is the important quality needed in true friends? Will friends try to help us when we are financially struggling in our lives? Basheer explores whether Prem intervenes in the correct way to start a new business for his friends. He also manages to instill some good messages and a few twists in his usual style to make the reading experience more enjoyable.

Heart-warming story depicting the friendship between three people. The story is about two friends, Pappachan and Pauly going to meet their long time friend Prem Raghu to see whether he is willing to help them start a new business venture. All the three friends come from different backgrounds and the author does a good work in bringing out the similarities and differences they have. It is truly one of the best books in friendship and at the same time, Basheer easily injects a message to the reader within the lines. The evolution of the protagonists from their care-free youth to adulthood is beautifully written and it was best captured in Prem, a person who decided to give a copy of the same love letter to his classmates into someone in a rich background deciding to marry a poor girl without making demands for dowry. The final twist in the story will surely leave a smile in your faces and probably inspire you to reconcile with your long lost buddies.

'Thara Specials' is a novella in classic Basheerian style. He has a way of writing which combines the most ordinary usage of language, which is realistic, conversational and comedic. Compared to conventional Malayalam literature, his language holds a shock element, with its simplicity. His style of writing feels closest to our hearts; his writing is, perhaps, the actual 'mother tongue'.

Now to 'Thara Specials'. This novella tells the story of three friends, one of whom endeavours to persuade the other two to start a cigarette factory named Thars Specials, as a local business opportunity which could flourish. We see caricaturistic characters and strange incidents unfold in front of us, making us laugh and smile throughout. There is also a tinge of grief between those layers of humour as well. It felt good to be back reading Basheer. Hoping to buy the complete Basheer collection soon. Thank you my friends Rohith and Thara for being the reason for me to read this.

സ്വതസിദ്ധമായ ഫലിതത്തിലൂടെ മൂന്നു സുഹൃത്തുക്കളുടെ കഥയാണ് എഴുത്തുകാരൻ ഇവിടെ അവതരിപ്പിക്കുന്നത്. ഒരു ജോലിയും ഇല്ലാതെ കൈവെച്ച ബിസിനസ് എല്ലാം പൊളിഞ്ഞു പാളീസായി നടക്കുന്ന പാപ്പച്ചൻ.. പാപ്പച്ചന്റെ മനസിൽ ഉദിക്കുന്ന പുത്തൻ ബിസിനസ് ആശയം ആണ് താരാ സ്പെഷ്യൽസ് എന്ന സിഗരറ്റ് ഫാക്ടറി. തന്റെ ഉറ്റ സുഹൃത്ത് ആയ പൗളിയെ പാർട്ണർ ആകാൻ സമ്മതിപ്പിക്കുന്നു. എന്നിട്ട് രണ്ടാളും കൂടി കോളേജ് പഠനകാലത്തെ തങ്ങളുടെ സുഹൃത്തായ പ്രേം രഘുവിന്റെ കാണാൻ പുറപ്പെടുന്നു. ഈ പ്രേം രഘുവിന്റെ കസ്റ്റഡിയിൽ ആണ് സിഗരറ്റ് ഉണ്ടാക്കുന്ന യന്ത്രം. വെറും രഘു എങ്ങനെ പ്രേം രഘു ആയെന്നും പാപ്പച്ചന്റെയും പൗളിയുടെയും മുൻകാല ബിസിനസുകൾ എങ്ങനെ എട്ടു നിലയിൽ പൊട്ടിയെന്നും അവരുടെ കോളേജ് കാല ഓർമകളും ഒക്കെ രസച്ചരട് മുറിയാതെ തന്നെ കഥാകാരൻ അവതരിപ്പിക്കുന്നു.
പ്രേം രഘു അവർക്ക് സിഗരറ്റ് യന്ത്രം കൊടുത്തോ? താരാ സ്പെഷ്യൽസ് എങ്കിലും വിജയകരം ആയോ? തുടങ്ങിയ ചോദ്യങ്ങൾക്ക് ഉള്ള ഉത്തരം പുസ്തകത്തിലുണ്ട്.

പറയുമ്പോൾ എല്ലാം പറയണമല്ലോ. തൊഴിൽരഹിതനും സർവ്വോപരി സാഹിത്യകാരനുമായ പാപ്പച്ചൻ ഒരു പുതിയ സംരംഭം തുടങ്ങുകയാണ്. താരാ സ്പഷ്യൽസ് എന്ന പേരിൽ ഒരു സിഗരറ്റ് നിർമ്മാണശാല. അതിനുമുമ്പ് തുടങ്ങാൻ ശ്രമിച്ച പരിപാടികളെല്ലാം പൊട്ടിപ്പാളീസായതിനുശേഷമാണ് ഈ സംരംഭം. കയ്യിൽ നയാപ്പൈസയില്ലാത്ത പാപ്പച്ചൻ പക്ഷെ മുതൽമുടക്കാൻ സഹപാഠിയായിരുന്ന പോളിയെയാണ് സമീപിക്കുന്നത്. സിഗരറ്റ് നിർമ്മാണ യന്ത്രം കയ്യിലുള്ള പ്രേംരഘു എന്ന മറ്റൊരു ചങ്ങാതിയേയും പാർട്ട്ണറാക്കാൻ തീർച്ചയാക്കി. മധുരമോഹന സുരഭിലമായ ഒരു ബിസിനസ് സ്വപ്‌നവുമായി ഒരുമിക്കുന്ന ആ കൂട്ടുകെട്ടിന്റെ അവസാനം, പാപ്പച്ചനെ സംബന്ധിച്ച് പറയുമ്പോൾ എല്ലാം പറയണമല്ലോ. അതി ഭീകരം. താരാസ്‌പെഷ്യൽസ്- ബഷീറിന്റെ തൂലികയിൽ പിറന്ന ഒരു മികച്ച നോവൽ.

മൂന്ന് ചെറുപ്പക്കാരുടെ കഥയാണ് ഇതിൽ പറയുന്നത്- പൗളി, പാപ്പച്ചൻ, പ്രേംരഘു. ഇവർ മൂവരും വ്യത്യസ്തമായ ചുറ്റുപാടിൽ നിന്ന് വളർന്നു വന്നവരാണ്. പാപ്പച്ചനാണ് ജീവിതം ഒരു നിലയിലെത്തിക്കാൻ കഷ്ടപ്പെട്ട് ഓരോ വഴികൾ കണ്ടുപിടിക്കാൻ ശ്രമിക്കുന്നത്. ഈ സുഹൃത്തുക്കൾ തമ്മിൽ ഒരുപാട് സമാനതകളുണ്ട് അതേപോലെതന്നെ വൈരുദ്ധ്യങ്ങളും ഉണ്ട്. പൗളിയും പാപ്പച്ചനും കൂടി തുടങ്ങിയ കിടപ്പറ എന്ന പുസ്തകം വളരെയധികം ചിരിപ്പിക്കുന്ന എന്നാണ്. എന്നിരുന്നാലും മറ്റ് ബഷീർ കഥകളെ അപേക്ഷിച്ച് ഈ രചനയ്ക്ക് അൽപം രസക്കുറവുണ്ട്

ഏതാനും സുഹൃത്തുക്കൾ ചേർന്ന് താര സിഗരറ്റ് ഫാക്ടറി തുടങ്ങാൻ തീരുമാനിക്കുന്നു. പിന്നീട് അത് ആരംഭിക്കുന്നതിന് വേണ്ടിയുള്ള മെഷീൻന് വേണ്ടി ശ്രമം തുടരുന്നു. പ്രേമ് രഘു വഴി അവർക്ക് മെഷീൻ ലഭിക്കുന്നു.
