Mystics & Mayhem #3

Something Wanton

Rate this book
Welcome back to the World of Weird. My name is Ember Blaylock. You can think of me as your supernatural tour guide.

Three months ago, I was just your average, ordinary, ghost-seeing, Senior in high school. I had sucky parents, awesome best friends, an annoying stalker, and a solid plan to get me far away from Moonlight, Missouri.

Then I fell in love with a vampire.

And found out I was a witch.

And banished a demon a couple of times.

And then, because the Bad Karma Fairy thinks I'm her personal plaything and loves to make me suffer...

I kind of died.

Now I'm sharing my body with a demon, my Prince Charming has turned into the Asshole King, I might be falling for one of my best friends, and there's a witch hunter who wants my head on a plate--or my butt tied to a stake.

Yeah, because I didn't have enough to do just being dead.

Place of Birth: Houston, MS, in 1976
Hair: Brown (unless I’m having a ‘Blonde Moment’)
Eyes: Green
Height: Short (and that’s all you get to know)
Weight: Fluffy (cough)

About Me:

I’m a prolific Paranormal Romance author who started writing for my daughter in 2008 when she ran out of vampire series to read. I'd never written a book before that, but by the time I finished that book for her I had the fever. I've been doing what the nagging voices in my head tell me to do ever since. I work full time, run a family, and still manage to put out two novels a year. To hear my husband tell it, I type in my sleep!

Likes:

Books. I've read everything I could lay my hands on since I was six.
The color orange--seriously, I love it.
Pajamas--I always said my dream job is one where I could to go to work without getting dressed :)
Music--all music (except bluegrass which gets on my last nerve). I'll listen to everything from country to rap to alternative to classical to heavy metal to the blues. My writing playlist is so mixed up it's crazy! I just love music. Acoustic guitar is my favoritest (no, I don’t care that's not really a word) favorite, though.
Scary Movies--not the blood and guts variety, but the truly creepy ones that have you looking under the bed before you get in--even when you're thirty.
Caffeine!! Favored fixes: Coffee, Caramel Iced coffee, Diet Coke

Dislikes:

People who talk on their phones while driving and in checkout lines.
Reality television. (Gags)
People with small minds and big mouths. (For some reason, they tend to come together).
Laziness--my biggest pet peeve EVER.

People Who Make Me Tick:

My amazing husband, Ronnie, whom I couldn't function without and who willingly shares me with the 500 people screaming in my head at all hours of the day and night. He also doesn't seem to mind that I can't cook to save my own life. That helps. :D
My even more amazing kids, Trey, Ben, Sierra and Taylor who keep me young, make me laugh, make me cry, and drive me absolutely crazy. I love you guys!
My sister, Audrey, who loves me enough to hide my laptop from me when I visit.
My ‘twinkie’ and the other half of my twisted mind, Terrica, who always comes through in a pinch when I'm running on empty--and who has read every incarnation of Something Witchy since the very first draft.
And my friend, mentor, and editor, Sara, who helped me turn a great book into an incredible adventure. My hero! :)

What I'm ‘Famous’ For:

Like Ember, I'll take on a challenge just to prove I can do it. I've been that way my whole life.
I'm an amazing friend--I'm everybody's Kim, from Something Witchy. If you need me, I'm there. If you cry, I cry. If you laugh, I laugh. If you kill someone, I help hide the body. (Due to concerned comments made on this particular point, a bit of explanation is appropriate here. In no way is the author condoning the wrongful death of those who deserve it, nor has she ever hidden a body. Come ON people, just a figure of speech!)
Being queen of the "Blonde Moment"--despite the fact I’m not blonde (really!!) and the fact that I have a really high IQ (which personally I don't think is any indication of intelligence, to be honest), I can do some of the dumbest things. My husband's favorite story to torment me with is the time I decided to paint the bedroom and didn't look at the paint can first. I kept painting and painting and the damn wall wasn't changing colors. Because it wasn't paint. It was latex. We were peeling that crap off the wall in strips for months.
Being able to listen without judging. I've never met a teenager that didn't feel they could tell me anything.
My wicked sense of humor--and my unnatural mastery of being blatantly sarcastic without being mean. I've been married to the master of being a smartass for the last eleven ye

I'm left wanting something alright :) Tissues, more revenge, book #4 :) Be sure to have tissues handy for this one! The author gets you so very attached the the characters you can feel their joy and their pain. Even though I haven't met a vampire, demon, angel, witch, or any of the other paranormal characters in the book they are described so well you feel like you know them. What they look like, what they are doing, it all makes sense and is easy to follow. The book plays out just like a movie for you to watch. You will want to read Something Witchy and Something Wicked first to set the stage. Something Wanton is book #3 in the Mystics & Mayhem series. And now a bit about the story ...

Ember wakes up and learns what it means to be tainted. She is finding it hard to adjust to her new "half" of a life. She misses Nathan, she feels trapped at home, and she is so very cold and hungry. When she finds out other witches are being targeted and killed she takes things into her own hands to battle her demons and set things right in the world. Kim, Blake, Grams, and Tyler are back to help her along the way, along with a new cast of characters we meet for the first time. Her and Nathan are soul mates, but they seem to have been torn apart. Tyler is there to help her pick up the pieces. As she is torn between her feelings for Nathan and Tyler she fights to save her friends and fellow witches. Can she find the traitor before it is too late or will the bad guys win?

Favorite quotes:
- "You won't have to go far. She's eavesdropping around the corner."
- I caught a glimpse of the tormented expression on his face as I closed the door behind me. That look stayed with me for the rest of the day... I was still seeing it when I gave up and got up to start cleaning my cage -- oops, my room.
- "Feel free to leave whenever you get ready. God knows I won't miss your company." "Give me time. I'll grown on you."
- And losing that trusted I'd had in him shattered more than my heart. I felt that pain all the way to the depths of my soul.
- "I guess that'll teach me to get in the middle when the Titans are beating the shit out of each other, huh?"
- I'm lost without you. Honestly, each minute that goes by that I'm not with you, I feel like I'm going mad.
- "I just got you back. You're not getting rid of me that easy, baby."
- "Just relax and let it do its job. If you behave, I will give you a lollipop."
- "We, a jury of their peers, find you guilty. Do you have anything to say before you die?"

This just blew me away...full review to come!

Update 12/11/13:

This book will leave you wanting many things, mainly a 4th book. I mean it, Ms. Myers, I need a 4th book this second, because I just need more of Ember and her crazy world!! This book in the Mystics and Mayhem series was quite simply amazing. The first book was awesome, but this series literally got better and better, and I didn't think it was possible for me to enjoy a series so much. Sure there are series that I love and will re-read, but there are only a select few that just blow me away. This is one of those series.

This installment in the series is packed full of action, adventure, romantic craziness, and heartbreak. So much happens in this novel that it's almost impossible to do a summary without giving away spoilers, so just know that a ton of stuff happens, and you will be glued to the page. You'll fly through the pages, and want to purposely slow down just so you don't miss anything or finish the book too quick. The writing was fantastic and the characters and setting were so well described I felt like it was playing out right in front of me.

Ember grows significantly in this novel. She gains new abilities that I feel we're only just being introduced to, gains new friends and new enemies, and loses people close to her that changes her forever. A beloved character is killed, and my heart broke so much, I was wanting to throw my tablet across the room. I experienced a roller coaster of emotions with Nathan. For a good majority of this book, I couldn't stand him (and I have loved him from the beginning), but then by the end, I was back to liking- not loving- him. I was kind of mad a Ember for forgiving him so easily, but I guess the whole soul mate thing allows for easier forgiving. All I know, is he would have a whole lot more apologizing to do if I were in Ember's position. I'm not going to lie, I kinda fell for Tyler in this one. He already had a special place in my heart, but he was there for Ember and wanted to help her no matter what. Then the end happened, and my heart was torn to shreds. I especially loved the introduction of Skippy! He was a great addition, and I hope we see more of him.

Overall, I highly recommend this series and this book because you are missing out by not reading it. It has a little bit of everything for everyone, and you won't be disappointed! With a sarcastic, witty main character, and plenty of action and romance, you can't go wrong. Get this book now!

OMG!!! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. I am sitting here trying to type through tears as I try to decide how I feel about an author who would devastate me in such a way. Over the last can't remember how many hours I've been soaking up this book. I've laughed out loud so my kids came running, I've bawled my eyes out like a 2 year old who's lost their ice cream and I've attempted to beat Ember over the head with my fork a few too many times. I think my children might be worried about my mental health. I can only hope that with unexpected twists and turns Mrs. Myers will redeem herself with the next book which can't come fast enough.

This third installment of Ember's story covers a lot of ground, from new abilities to new enemies and all the teenage angst to go with it, you'll either love or hate Ember by the time it's over. Me I'm definitely in hate with her at the moment but what can I say, she destroyed me. Can't tell you how, you'll just have to read that for yourself, but I can say that no matter what you expect to happen, it will be bigger and bolder. If your heart doesn't get ripped out of your chest, thrown to the ground, have a cowboy do a nice little two step on it, another come and grind their heels into into then try to stick it back into your chest, then I say YOU ARE HEARTLESS. Well that's my opinion. Can't wait to see others.

AJ Myers I sure hope you know what you're doing and are prepared to relieve my angst immediately.

Oh no I did not see this coming. Yeah I know I had said I did not want Ember with Ty but I did not want this to happen. I still liked him so very much. I was in shock and did not expect it to turn out that way. I had nightmares :( I'm sorry Ty.... come back come back....... I need to breath a little :( enough drama. seriously WHAT JUST HAPPENED??? Anyways I hope the next book comes out fast. I cannot wait for it any longer. Nathan and Ember are my favorite characters they fit so well and their stories were so interesting. I LOVED Skippy too his part in the book was short but the story of his past and present was perfect I just loved him. For some reason he reminds me so much of another character from the books of VA named Adrian.

I love all the characters and their part in this book, I've only a read a few books where a big group of friends like these make a big huge part so clean and natural in the book without getting in each other's way.
I cannot really say what I loved the most of this book I just loved it from start to end. All three books have exceeded my expectations.

Seriously AJ Myers I'm a fan, love your work and you're an amazing writer. I will continue buying your books, can't wait for the next book.

I have to admit, at about 30% through this book I was thinking it deserved only a 2 or 3 star rating. I set it aside for awhile because it was feeling like a chore to read. I am glad I powered through it, because by around 40-50% it really picked up. This book really redeemed itself by the end, but it was TOO DARN LONG! Really, almost the first half of the book is Ember feeling sorry for herself. While now I understand WHY she had to spend a lot of time wallowing (with a certain person), I really think it could have been compacted. Overall, this is a good series. It just took me until the end of book three to decide how I felt about it all.

great series. there seems to be an "F" word in each book and some steamy scenes that don't go into too much detail. Ember spent half the book wallowing in pity but I could understand it. a little corny in some places. and sad in others.

Better than the last book.

The characters + their development were much better and the plot held my interest to the end. I particularly enjoyed Tyler, but was disappointed with his convenient demise.
