Shooting Star: The Bevo Francis Story

Rate this book
In the history of college and professional basketball, only three men have ever scored 100 points in a game. One of those, Bevo Francis, turned the trick twice. Shooting Star is a fascinating biography of the smooth-shooting sensation who leapt from obscurity to become a national hero.

Shooting Star: The Bevo Francis Story by Kyle Keiderling (Sports Media Publishing Inc. 1995) (796.323 / Biography). Bevo Francis was a shy polite eighteen-year-old farm boy from the hills of eastern Ohio in the early 1950's who happened to be six feet nine inches tall. Bevo played for tiny Rio Grande College in Ohio and for a time was the most famous college basketball player in the world. Bevo still holds the NCAA record for most points in a game with 103. He had scored 116 points in a game the previous season, but that record was disallowed by the NCAA. All my life my now-eighty-eight-year-old father has spoken of the basketball sensation Bevo Francis, and now I know why. It's actually a bittersweet story. It was widely agreed that Bevo might have become an NBA star. Ironically, his professional basketball career was arguably derailed by the only coach that Bevo ever had. However, that allowed Bevo to do what he'd always wanted: to go back to the farm with his wife to raise his children. My rating: 7/10, finished 6/11/18. I purchased my hardback copy on Amazon 12/1/17. HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
