About the author

Samaresh Majumdar (Bangla: সমরেশ মজুমদার) was a well-known Bengali writer. He spent his childhood years in the tea gardens of Duars, Jalpaiguri, West Bengal, India. He was a student of the Jalpaiguri Zilla School, Jalpaiguri. He completed his bachelors in Bengali from Scottish Church College, Kolkata. His first story appeared in "Desh" in 1967. "Dour" was his first novel, which was published in "Desh" in 1976. Author of novels, short stories and travelogues, Samaresh received the Indian government's coveted Sahitya Akademi award for the second book of the Animesh series, 'Kalbela".

সমরেশ মজুমদার-এর জন্ম ১০ মার্চ ১৯৪৪। শৈশব কেটেছে ডুয়ার্সের চা-বাগানে। জলপাইগুড়ি জেলা স্কুলের ছাত্র। কলকাতায় আসেন ১৯৬০-এ। শিক্ষা: স্কটিশ চার্চ কলেজ থেকে বাংলায় অনার্স, পরে কলকাতা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের এম.এ। প্রথমে গ্রুপ থিয়েটার করতেন। তারপর নাটক লিখতে গিয়ে গল্প লেখা। প্রথম গল্প ‘দেশ’ পত্রিকায়, ১৯৬৭ সালে। প্রথম উপন্যাস ‘দৌড়’, ১৯৭৫-এ ‘দেশ’ পত্রিকায়। গ্রন্থ: দৌড়, এই আমি রেণু, উত্তরাধিকার, বন্দীনিবাস, বড় পাপ হে, উজান গঙ্গা, বাসভূমি, লক্ষ্মীর পাঁচালি, উনিশ বিশ, সওয়ার, কালবেলা, কালপুরুষ এবং আরও অনেক। সম্মান: ১৯৮২ সালের আনন্দ পুরস্কার তাঁর যোগ্যতার স্বীকৃতি। এ ছাড়া ‘দৌড়’ চলচ্চিত্রের কাহিনিকার হিসাবে বি এফ জে এ, দিশারী এবং চলচ্চিত্র প্রসার সমিতির পুরস্কার। ১৯৮৪ সালে ‘কালবেলা’ উপন্যাসের জন্য পেয়েছেন সাহিত্য অকাদেমি পুরস্কার।

অর্জুন একেবারেই আলাদা। কাদের থেকে? তথাকথিত আমরা যেসব গোয়েন্দা চরিত্রকে চিনি তাদের থেকে। আর সেটা আপনি একটা গল্প পড়ে ধরতে পারবেন না। সেই 'খুটিমারি রেঞ্জ' থেকে আমাদের অর্জুন একটু একটু করে বিকশিত হয়েছে। তাই ঠিক ওখান থেকেই আপনাকে শুরু করতে হবে। একে একে সীতাহরণ রহস্য, লাইটার, জুতোয় রক্তের দাগ এগুলো যদি শেষ করে থাকেন তাহলে আর অর্জুনকে নিয়ে চিন্তা নেই। ইতোমধ্যে সে আপনার প্রিয় চরিত্র হয়ে বসে আছে।

এই সমগ্রে পাবেন -

এই সমগ্রের এক একটা উপন্যাস ছিল এক এক ধাঁচের। 'কালোপাহাড়' ও 'ম্যাক সাহেবের নাতনি' ইতিহাস আশ্রিত, 'অর্জুন বেরিয়ে এলো, কার্ভালোর বাক্স' দুটো গল্পই নিখাদ সায়েন্স ফিকশন, বাকিগুলো গতানুগতিক রহস্য গল্প। আমার সবচেয়ে প্রিয় শেষ দুটো উপন্যাস। 'কালোপাহাড়' টার প্রতি আলাদা ভালো লাগা আছে। সব মিলিয়ে অর্জুন আমি বেশ উপভোগ করছি। আরো কয়েকটা না পড়ে থামা হবে না বলে মনে হচ্ছে।

কালাপাহাড়, ফুলে বিষের গন্ধ,ম্যাকসাহেবের নাতনি পড়ে ভালো লেগেছে।অর্জুন বেড়িয়ে এলো একেবারেই দলছুট সায়েন্স ফিকশন,পড়তে মন্দ না।রত্নগর্ভা পড়ে বিরক্ত হয়েছি,খুব তাড়াহুড়ো করে লেখা।সব মিলিয়ে উপভোগ্য।অর্জুন ছাপোষা মধ্যবিত্তের সন্তান এবং চোখে পড়ার মতো কোনো বৈশিষ্ট্য না নিয়েই সত্যসন্ধান করে,এজন্য তার প্রতি আলাদা টান ছিলো। সেই টানেই পড়ে ফেললাম।তবে এরপর আর পড়বো কি না সন্দেহ আছে।

এই বইয়ে অর্জুনের কিছু নতুন রহস্যভেদী গল্প আছে। আগের মতোই অর্জুন সাহসী, কৌতূহলী আর নিজের মতো করে ভাবতে ভালোবাসে। লেখার ধরণ সহজ, গল্পগুলোও ছোট, তাই পড়া ঝটপট শেষ করা যায়।

তবে সব কাহিনি সমান শক্তিশালী নয়। কিছু কিছু গল্প একটু সাদামাটা, দ্রুত শেষ হয়ে যায়, আর থ্রিল বা চমক কম থাকে। কিছু জায়গায় অর্জুনের চরিত্রও একটু রিপিটেটিভ মনে হয়েছে—আগের মতোই, কিন্তু তেমন নতুন কিছু নেই।

Second Instalment of “Arjun Samagra”. Samaresh Majumdar is one of the most celebrated contemporary novelist. He is most famous for his ahead of time revolutionary pen. Arjun is a character created for kids. When we were growing up, during our school days. We used to read Arjun Novel and our adolescent fantasy lost all limits. The catchiest things about Arjun Novels are its connection with North Bengal. The Second Instalment consists of five different stories: -
1. Kalapahar
2. Arjun Beriye Elo
3. Ratnogarbha
4. Mac Saheber Natni
5. Fule Bisher Gandho
While reading the stories one has to keep in mind that the stories are for teenagers.
Each one has a different flavour. The second one is a complete Sci-Fi. Time Travel, Alien invasion and what not. The forth story is the most interesting. It dealt a great deal about the Pre-Independence Revolution in and around Jalpaiguri.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this. And I intend to read all the other parts after this. It’s just another way to get nostalgic and relive my childhood.

Arjun - the sleuth cum science fiction character by Samaresh Majumdar, is a character for children. Don't compare him with Byomkesh/Feluda, and you may like the stories :)
