Super cute collection of short bits by the monsters in the kids GN world. Especially notable for the myriad Raina Telgemeier and Babymouse completists. Telgemeier's selection is about a D&D game, so that's cool. And this is the first time I've actually read a Babymouse story myself (I know, I know). It's great as a sampler, especially if you're trying to broaden your JGN knowledge very quickly.

Honestly, the standout for me was from Dan Santat, particularly because people just announced that he's coming out with a memoir about his childhood. I am just a ::little:: bit excited about that.

Fun anthology of short stories by popular children's graphic novelists. I've read all these authors before and found it a delight to read these stories. Some are one-off shorts while others are further adventures of favourite characters such as Baby Mouse and Lunchroom Lady. The stories are all held together by the common theme of recess; with recess featuring prominently in some and and simply in passing in others. I enjoyed each story, each being a perfect example of the author/illustrator's work. I went into each one looking forward to the treat and was not disappointed, however, if the reader has not read any of these authors these stories are bound to have you searching for their other books. Good Show! And the back of the book assures us that a sequel is in the works. Yeah!

Full disclosure: I have a Five Below copy that has a blue border instead of the yellow border on the cover. The back is probably also blue-instead-of-yellow, but since this is the only copy I have, that's just speculation on my part. No idea if anything else changed, though I wouldn't imagine it's anything major, based on the Fairy Tail copy I reviewed.

A fun collection of eight comics with a vague "recess" theme (Dogman and Lunch Lady are a bit iffy), some featuring characters from other titles, most featuring characters exclusive to these stories.

1. The Super-Secret Ninja Club: Gene Luen Yang

There's always an amount I reflexively dislike any character who tries to horn in on another group, unsolicited, especially when it feels like he (Daryl) is trying to appropriate the others' culture (non-Asian joining a "ninja" club). However, it's kids playing around; the others aren't even actually proficient in anything "ninja"-like. () A nice stealth story about being good friends!

2. Book 'em, Dog Man!: Dav Pilkey

I'm still not clear on if it's "Dogman" or "Dog Man"... that might be a meta joke, given how the "authors" are elementary kids and can barely even draw or write coherently?

My normal criticism of Pilkey's work applies: It's a decent effort, but the colouring is still too "proper" for actual young artists' of their calibur! There's SHADING, and it's almost always within the lines! Good job on the misspellings and crossing out and rewriting mistakes, those kinds of touches!

The "letter from the teacher" preface is pretty disheartening, though—"How dare these children exhibit CREATIVITY in school?!" :( I get that it's a joke, but there are people who believe that for real, and it's so sad.

Also... I guess the kids at recess eventually helped to beat Petey? Is that how it ties in? I guess?

3. Betty and the Perilous Pizza Day: Jarrett J. Krosoczka

I've luckily read a Lunch Lady book, so I understand it's supposed to be superhero-themed. Granted, since Lunch Lady calls out sick, the only real superhero-ish thing that happens is Betty using a failed pizza-making machine to make a pizza monster (and ).

On one hand, I feel like I would've been disappointed as one of the kids. Granted, I haven't had a school pizza in so long, my memory has overwritten the nostalgic taste as being the same as a Totino's pizza, so I don't know... maybe it's fine? I mean, Pizza Day or not, it's still just one lunch day.

4. The Magic Acorn: Ursula Vernon

I feel like I should know Scratch and Squeak from somewhere, but I'm sure they're new characters just for this anthology. It's a cute story, though, about when the boy who cried wolf (squirrel who cried Magic Acorn?) finally calls out a real "wolf" ()! Definitely signature Vernon material!

5. Babymouse: The Quest for Recess: Jennifer L. Holm and Matthew Holm

This perplexed me a bit, especially after having just read Lights, Camera, Middle School!, since middle school isn't really a "recess" grade? Maybe this is Babymouse prior to middle school, though, I don't know. Of course, detention doesn't feel like a thing that combines with recess, but it may just be that *my* schools never happened to have them in the same grades? I don't have a lot of experience with schools I didn't attend to say whether this story is believable in that respect... but then, it's also "just a story." I should really just relax.

This story is definitely Babymouse, regardless. It does strike me as weird just HOW much her (day)dreams interfere with her real life, but I guess there's no story otherwise. Good on her finding the motivation to overcome her problems, though!

One tiny complaint: Lunch Lady shows up in Babymouse's story! Yet Babymouse doesn't show up in Betty's... I mean, I guess Babymouse HERSELF can't show up in a Lunch Lady story, but even just on a poster or something? (or maybe this is where Lunch Lady ACTUALLY was when she called out sick, haha)

6. Jiminy Sprinkles in "Freeze Tag": Eric Wight

I have the lowest investment in this one NOT because it's about talking food, but because I am the least familiar with the creator. *looks at the next story* Okay, ALSO because it's about talking food, I guess. It's not a bad story, though! It has a nice twist at the end about , which I always like to see, even if my gut instinct is "BOO, ENEMY BAD" *foam at mouth*... I like it when even stories aimed at younger readers remind my gut that it's very often wrong and counterproductive!

(Also, honestly, get a bad rap, and this is a good counterargument!)

7. 300 Words: Dan Santat

I'm also not familiar with Santat's work, but I *am* familiar with The Giving Tree, so that gives it a slight edge over the prior story.

By "edge," though, I really just mean I wanted to see where it was going with the assigned book report on it. Sophia really nails it with the "irony of Andrew asking to copy her report on The Giving Tree" bit, haha. A really clever story (except for the "making kids kiss in a school play" flashback part... that seems like it wouldn't be acceptable ever ever ever).

The dedication makes me wonder if this was even sort of a true story, though. Hmm. Probably will never know, for their privacy.

Incidentally, for what it's worth, my review *without* this sentence is 1,050 words, to give an idea of how long the report should be.

8. The Rainy Day Monitor: Dave Roman and Raina Telgemeier

I probably like this the best, because D&D! Also, the fact it illustrates exactly why role-playing games are so fun: "This is IMAGINARY! You can choose ANYBODY!" So are in it! As well as... well... it says , but I can't find that person? (did they mean ?

...well, it's IMAGINARY, so that's fine then! I mean, maybe that's intentional, since there's also not-Iron Man and not-Princess Peach and not-Godzilla (and TECHNICALLY ). Okay, answered my own question, maybe.

Anyway, an overall fun collection, with a few fun extra inserts, like the (EXTREMELY abbreviated) "How to Draw Betty" and "Mash-Up Madness" pages! Definitely worth checking out for fans of even one or two of the included creators!

Funny, of course, but also filled with some interesting and subtle messages about growing up and just being a kid. This is jam-packed with heavy-hitting graphic novel writers for kids. Raina Telegemeier (Smile and Drama), Dav Pilkey (Captain Underpants), Jennifer Holme (Babymouse) and more! There's some cool interlude-style comedy between the comics from Lunch Lady and Babymouse that readers will enjoy, and there are some short author and illustrator bios in the back for kids to mull over. I loo forward to reading more of these.

The book Comics Squad: Recess is about all of these diffrent comics that are put together in one book. One of the comics is about a club that calls themselfs the Super Secret Ninga Club and, a little boy who wants to join. Over winter break he trains hard but, when it's back to school the Super Secret Ninga Club doesn't play ningas anymore they all play kickball.
There are so many more comics in that book. I reccomend this book for anyone who like a little laugh and some cool comics.

Last year around this same time I fell into a bit of a reading slump (yes, it happens to everyone) and I picked up a little comics selection called Comics Squad: Detention hoping that it would revive me. I'm happy to say that it did the trick. Thinking lightning might strike twice, I delved into Comics Squad: Recess! by Jennifer L. Holm, Jarrett J. Krosoczka, Dan Santat, & Raina Telgemeier which is another book from this collection. This book explores the theme of recess with the authors/illustrators charged with coming up with stories which somehow incorporated this theme. (Some accomplished this feat more successfully than others as a few barely mentioned recess at all.) I especially enjoyed the last 2 stories both visually and from a narrative standpoint. (If you're curious, the two stories are "300 Words" by Dan Santat which was a love story and "The Rainy Day Monitor" by Raina Telgemeier & Dave Roman which was about a RPG kickball game.) I like recommending this series to burgeoning graphic novel/comics fans since it contains a variety of storytelling and art styles to give them a better idea of what they might like. This is a great idea for anyone, regardless of age, who might be interested in sampling different writers and illustrators. 8/10 overall and certainly wouldn't say no to reading more from this series (or from the two artists mentioned).

I can’t believe I hadn’t read this before! I recommended the series to students based on authors who contributed, knowing this would be a quick, easy, funny read for them. But I didn’t realize how much I would enjoy it and how many opportunities there are for lesson connections.

My favorite story is the first—smart move on the part of a Jennifer and Matthew Holm putting it at the beginning! I was hooked! Daryl’s struggles to become a super secret ninja—only to have the fad fadeaway as they are wont to do—made me laugh out loud. Yang’s style is neat, organized and filled with great vocabulary. Affirmatory, indeed!

Some thoughts on how to use this with students (other than simply handing it to them and hooking them on all of the series mentioned within)

—Dog Man: editing, grammar, conventions
—BabyMouse: quests
—Jiminy sprinkles: wordplay
—300 words: how do themes from books play out in reality?

A collection of comics from various authors that are about recess/school in some way.

Humorous elements in all of them, I liked some of the comic styles better than others, but none of the stories "ruined" the collection. My favorite was The Magic Acorn that I would give 4.5 stars to, with 300 Words, Jimmy Sprinkles in Freeze Tag and Babymouse the Quest for Recess at 4 stars, Betty and the Perilous Pizza Day is the singular 3 star with the other two, Book 'em Dog Man and The Super-Secret Ninja Club, coming in at 2 stars.

Content notes: No language, sensuality or violence issues, some gross humor and fighting animate but inhuman objects but in no way graphic.

Book 216 of 300 ~ 2024

🌟🌟🌟🌟

I chanced upon this as I was looking for @geneluenyang and @goraina other works.

What are the odds that I find something with both of them...???

Well, high. Duh, they are brilliant?

Anyhow... this also features works by the brains behind captain underpants as well as baby mouse..

It is a series from what I gather, and it is a hoot.

Hope that I can find the others!

This was a cute compilation of graphic novellas from some of my favorite authors - with the theme of recess. Gene Luen Yang's Super Secret Ninja Club story was by far my favorite. It just had the essence of all his other graphic novels. Raina Telgemeier's story about kickball RPG-style was incredible. It was so much fun and the poke at the former VP made me giggle. You'll see what I mean when you read it (it's one of those things that kids may not get, but adult definitely will).

I borrowed a digital copy of this book from my library only for the Babymouse comic but I read the rest of the book just to see if there were any other comics I enjoyed. Sadly Babymouse was the only one I liked. I loved the Babymouse story but the others I didn’t really enjoy and they seemed like they should have been part of a bigger story or didn’t seem like they really had an ending. I wasn’t a huge fan of this book.

Prolific authors/illustrators Matthew & Jennifer Holm, Dav Pilkey, Jarrett Krosoczka, Dan Santat, Raina Telgemeir, Dave Roman, Ursula Vernon, Eric Wright, and Gene Luen Yang bring their much loved characters to life in this compilation of short graphic stories. There’s Dog Man, Baby Mouse, Lunch Lady and Betty and more up to their usual shenanigans but in much smaller chunks. Plenty of silliness and laughter for those in 1st-4th grade.

Not every story was 5 out of 5 stars, but there were some pretty amazing short stories in this comic. I loved the last one that had the kids playing around of D&D for recess since they couldn't go outside and have a actual kickball game. It's a fun collection of stories by different artist and authors. It would be a huge hit with my Middle Schoolers.

This graphic novel includes eight stories around the theme of recess. This book and the stories inside are very focused on comedy and parody. There are ninjas, talking squirrels and cupcakes, and even aliens. This wasn't my favorite book, but I'm glad I gave it a shot. Maybe it is the fact that I'm not used to reading this genre, but I would recommend it to older elementary school kids.

This collection of graphic novel stories was ok. I don't quite see why graphic novels are so popular and engaging for kids - pictures and quick read. That said, the vocabulary and background knowledge to understand the story is HUGE for reading growth. Adults should not under-estimate the power of graphic novels.
