The megahit Attack on Titan anime finally returns, streaming on April 1!
Please remember when reading this that it is not in the same continuity as the actual Attack on Titan series. This is a spin-off alternate contuity manga whose sole job is to parody the original series to hell and back. This is what makes it so funny.
The setting is a world where Titans and humans live in (apparent) peace with each other. They all attend massive schools designed to teach the humans and Titans to (I don't know, get along?) do... something constructive, I guess.
Into this setting comes Eren Yeager and Mikasa Ackerman. Eren hates the Titans after one ate his cheese meatloaf. In Japan, they have a wierd type of cheeseburger that is very much a combination of what we would call meat loaf and cheeseburger rolled into one. That is it. Eren is a raging racist against Titans because of this. At first, everyone thinks he's wacko, until he turns out to maybe be right in his suspicions of the Titans...
What makes this parody manga so hilarious is how effectively they affectionately, but ruthlessly, mock every facet of the stories. Hange always has his/her name covered by sarcastic boxes where they refuse to state Hange's gender. Levi is a neat-freak who will punish for the least little offense. Sasha eats non-stop, including in games and wants to eat from trash or other hideous places. Mikasa and Annie are competing for Eren's attention, and Mikasa is pretty damn near a stalker in her protectiveness of Eren and willingness to punish others who offend him (or try to date him, hello Annie!). Armin is a computer MMO geek, Connie is an idiot, and Ymir would like you to not be close to Krista, thank you very much. Though she isn't as bad as Mikasa where Eren is concerned.
All of this could have been stupid and annoying if done as just a series of gags. But it wasn't. Junior High is a fun, if wierd, slice of life series detailing the wierdness of these characters' lives. It does, in a wierd way, connect with the main series in that the Titans are a driving force but the main issue is the human interactions.
The humor will only make sense if you have read much of the series (or also read some of the series and a lot of spoilers like me), so one should read the regular manga some before reading this. But it is funny! :D
I had really mixed feelings about this omnibus when I started it because I wasn’t a huge fan of how they reduced Eren’s trauma down to a titan stealing his lunch. I wish that it had been something more extreme to pay homage to the original series, but I understand how the author wanted to make this series extremely lighthearted.
This is now the second school AU series that I’ve read and while they’re nothing life-changing, they are a lot of fun. I liked how this one follows the rough progression of the main series but translated for a school environment.
My favorite thing about this series is the out of pocket lines (that I’m assuming were chosen by the translator). I never thought I’d hear Fox news, Tobey Maguire, and numerous other pop culture references being made in the Attack on Titan universe until I picked up this omnibus. It’s hilarious because the characters are also extremely aware of shonen tropes and being in a manga, which made everything funnier. It was top tier humor.
I would say that I liked volume two better than volume one because volume two starts really embracing Hange’s gender identity and it also starts messing around with ships. The ships you love from the main series aren’t the main ones being pushed in this junior high AU, so it’s a lot of fun seeing which ships might become canon in this AU series.
Whether or not you actually like Attack on Titan: Junior High depends on your tolerance for repetitive jokes, one note characters, and an overly localized (and instantly dated) translation. My patience for such things is pretty close to zero when the execution does not work for me, and that was certainly the case for Junior High.
Gag manga can be tough to get right and making them a parody of an existing series is even harder. There is a balancing act between appealing to big time fans of the preceding (or concurrent as is the case here) series as well as having some sort of appeal to other readers who may only be somewhat familiar with the source material. Junior High fails on both fronts. For a new reader, it simply doesn't make much sense. Why are there walls? What are Titans? What is the point? For those already familiar with the original manga (or the anime) the basis for the gags make sense, but that doesn't necessarily make them funny after a chapter or two. Making fun of Eren’s hatred of Titans or Mikasa’s obsession with Eren is novel for a little bit, but certainly not for the length of a 2 in 1 omnibus release.
Another issue with the Kodansha Comics release specifically is their localization of some of the jokes. The choices made were dated before the manga even hit the print. Moreover, they didn't even make sense. I felt like I need a transaction note to understand what the localized joke meant. Additionally, they added notes for what various foods are, but didn't take the time to explain what they had localized when they suddenly invoked the names of Shia Labeouf and Tobey Maguire. This might be fine for the most casual manga readers; but as pointed out before there is barrier to entry to Junior High and those readers who can pass that are likely going to notice that something has been significantly changed. These readers might appreciate (or even demand) knowing which Japanese celebrity was actually referenced.
That is not to say everything about it was unbearable. There are several scenes in the first volume that give it an intriguing, almost subversive, undercurrent. These all revolve around the idea that if the Titans aren't killers but rather are just different then Eren’s hatred of Titans is simply bigotry. This is pointed out by other characters repeatedly throughout the volume, although many are swayed toward his point of view over the course of the volume. This is both disturbing and eerily familiar in the current political states of various western countries. There's very little about this series that I liked, but that element stood out as interesting at least.
I really couldn't recommend this manga to anyone, fans of Attack on Titan or not. If you're yearning for a gag manga, try something like My Neighbor Seki (released in English by Vertical Comics). It's infinitely more enjoyable. If you desperately need more Attack on Titan to tide you over, the consider one of the numerous other side stories that have been published in English. There are plenty of other options, almost all of which should be more palatable to a discerning reader than Attack on Titan: Junior High.
It’s been a almost a month since the season finale of AOT and I’m still in mourning lol and I have been thinking about it every day since, so it was nice to return to these characters but see them in hilarious situations. I watched this spoof a few years ago and loved it, and am glad to have found the manga for it! It was funny and what I needed. It’s a parody of itself and is ridiculous but in the best way!
3.5 stars, as some of the arcs were better than others. But I certainly love an AU with characters in junior high school and this was a lot of fun. All jokes aside, it was nice to see these characters not fighting for their lives yet maintain some of their personality traits. Perhaps the best was Sasha in her quest for a sweet bun, and Levi in his never-ending quest to keep everything clean.
Love attack on titan one of my favourite series and was surprised I enjoyed this spin off so much. Love the chibi art style and some parts were actually hilarious...
I really wanted to like this, I really did. But the humor is outdated and some of the stuff that happened made no sense. The anime version is so funny though !
While Eren holds a grudge against the titans , he won't stop until he has found revenge. As he enters Junior High there will be cleaning, dodge-ball fifths, battles against their Senpais, summer festivals, and fighting titans for the lunch that they have stolen. The book is filled with comedy with the characters from attack on titan. It also gives you short stories all piled into the book. Because of this it makes it more entertaining! it's as good as the Anime.
This manga is a brilliantly twisted parody of one of the hottest manga titles on the market. If you've never read or seen any of Attack on Titan, it won't make the slightest bit of sense, but if you have even the slightest exposure to that series, this bizarre alternate version of the story is very funny. The story takes place at a very unusual junior high, one at which there are both human and Titan students. They attend different classrooms, but at the same school. These Titans don't actually kill their human counterparts, but they do bully them and embarrass them in various ways, as well as interact in some odd settings, like the school dance and other activities. Yes, you'll have to read it to see how that works. Eren has long suffered for a childhood incident in which a young Titan stole his favorite lunch, and he finds other like-minded students who want revenge, but how? It involves school clubs, spying on Titans, a school folk dance, a bun-eating race, an upperclass girl with a grudge, and many other things. Lots of crazy fun.
To be honest when i first bought this book a i was a little bit weary of it, thinking it would be cheesy and not very funny at all. I was happily surprised when i read to find out this this book is absolutely HILARIOUS. I laughed out loud pretty much every other page and was constantly sending photos to my friends of funny moments. The way the exaggerated the characters personalities or little gags from the original books and made them into a way a young teen would think - Eren hating titans as one stole his lunch once, Levi being completely OBSESSED with cleaning, Mikasa being attached to Eren, Armin's fears and many more for all the other characters is both brilliant and hilarious. I highly recommend reading all of these mangas if youre a fan of attack on titan, especially if youve read them all as there are little jokes that you can catch onto! 5/5 stars hands down ;D
Shingeki spin-offs are what EVA spin-offs used to be - big thing!
And just like on Tumblr there's bazillion AUs: from coffee shop, to college to Levi-squad as kindergarteners... Here's the "Everyone in Junior High School" AU! Where everyone is drawn to look more their age for once (not quite SD, but halfway there) with unicorns MP Brigade as Student Council, roses Garrison as "Wall Beautification Club" and the Wings of Freedom Survey Corp are more like a secret that meets in the shed
The plot is typical slice-of-life: after-school clubs, shoe-locker mysterious love letters, sports day rivalries and so on... Just with occasional non-malicious TITANS
Personally, I prefer the Spoof on Titan 4-koma, but this one is funny too. In small 2-3 chapters doses
Unlike many other reviews, my problem wasn't that it was localized, but that the localizations were hard to understand. I think a good few of the jokes worked better localized, since it would be easier and faster to understand a reference to, say, tumblr or CNN than having to read translation notes to understand what was originally said. This is supposed to be a comedy, after all. But many of the references were too vague, especially ones to 70's and 80's actors when the age range is 16+, and a few jokes felt dragged out or repetitive. However, there are a lot of good chapters across the series that really work, and that's why I still enjoyed it despite their often odd choice of celebrity references. All in all, I really enjoyed it.
The Titans eat Eren's beloved lunch which provokes his anger even more. The school with a bunch of titans and humans, Eren is sure to not hold back and fight against them. Eren is put into the cleaning club after he had failed to turn in the correct club applying form. The cleaning club eventually helps Eren a lot, by letting him practice and get to know skills he hasn't known about before. I rated this book 5 stars because it entertained me whenever I read it, and I can't wait to read the next episode.
OML, this is probably my favorite parody series yet. I love how Nakagawa interprets the characters. I've always been a fan of Annie and tbh I almost love this version of her more lmao. She's adrokable really. Zoe is great too! Honestly all of the characters in this are so cute and I like how Nakagawa utilizes junior high tropes and stereotypes. Mostly I like how she ties these tropes into the original AOT series. She turned something sinister into something lighthearted and fun.
I'm always down for more comedy releases, but Eren was probably the biggest detraction in this, coming across as an annoying high-strung bigot. Annie lost her beak as well. I kind of wish the premise was a school set along side a Titan preserve or park, the integrated school setting gave me racism vibes more than silly humor and I found myself enjoying the parts without that setting the most.
I was really hoping to like this as i do like attack on titan and i really enjoyed the attack on titan junior high anime but the manga has one huge problem and that is its in my opinion trying to hard to be relatable with the constant references to things that really don’t need to be mentioned but overall it was an ok manga. I think it's one of those books you're either going to love or hate it.
I had already watched the AOT Junior High anime before watching this, but I had no idea how different they were. I much prefer the manga because it feel like the anime went the "safe" route with many of their jokes. AOT Junior High does not hold back and it makes me love the characters even more, and lets me have a bit of happiness amongst the intense sadness AOT brings.
This is a cute book! I would rate it 3.5/5 stars, I will give it a 4 as I can not give half stars. I was definitely hoping for more storyline that consisted of the titans or have more scenes with them. Overall, this book was funny and a quick read. It made me laugh many different times, and for many different reasons. I would recommend this book for sure!
Won't be continuing. Felt like a bunch of random ideas mashed into one book with no plot. Not very clever or funny. Only part I liked was when Oluo said the 'A' on a grading scale stood for "crippling anxiety" because I felt that.
I totally get that this is a different spin on the AoT universe... but I am really not into the story they are selling. A bit lackluster imo, but obviously others have really enjoyed it!
I think if you love the series you should try it, but it may not be for you.
Well I read this as a fun little story, but I got pretty bored of it. Some aspects were fun, but most of the time I find myself getting unfocused as the story goes on and on. It's a good really for a spin-off on Attack on Titan, but I just didn't find it that interesting.
I really wanted to like this book. I honestly don't know what I thought it would be but it definitely wasn't this. It was so weird. I did not enjoy it at all. I was so glad when it ended. I definitively won't be reading anymore of these.
