From the author that brought you 'Degeneration' comes the next evolutionary stage of horror - 'Desolation'
A year has passed since the biological agent dubbed 'PT-12' ravaged the United States of America. The tide of undeath caused by the outbreak has receded, and what remains of society has splintered between those living in FEMA camps and those risking a world without walls.
Jerri is one young woman living in such a camp, aged beyond her years by what she witnessed during the viral apocalypse and what life in the camps has become. Here in this desolate new world, both her ethics and her urge to survive will be tested by the living, the dead, the camp and beyond.
Mark Campbell, author of the best-selling H7N9 Chronicles series, specializes in post-apocalyptic and sci-fi thrillers. Drawing on his background in law enforcement and cybersecurity, Mark brings a unique perspective to his stories, blending technology, suspense, and thought-provoking themes.
First things first, I got a free copy of this book from the author via Goodreads, in exchange for a fair and honest review. I do not know the author personally. I was free to give this book any rating/review that I felt appropriate.
I give this story 4.5 stars deducting only for the typos, but since that isn’t an option. I will round up to five stars, because I honestly enjoyed this story.
Right from the start the character of Jerri, a young woman living in a post apocalyptic world, caught my interest. She was smart, independent and brassy. About 1/3 of the way into the story, the character of Jerri took a twist, which had me concerned about the remainder of the story. Yet this twist ended up helping the story/characters grow.
The events of this story move along rapidly, keeping this reader’s attention locked in.
The Post-Apocalyptic (Zombies) setting of this world was richly described. It was easy for me to mentally slip inside the scenes of this story.
Adding to both the details of the setting and clues to the outbreak origin, in my copy of the e-book there were several FEMA Propaganda photos included. These Posters brought my mind back to the WW2 Propaganda posters, as well as giving some interesting history to the original outbreak.
Though this story is about Jerri and the survivors of the zombies apocalypse, it is also a cynical view of depending on any government or government agencies for help in extreme situations.
I am adding this strong caution: There are some gory and dark twists in this story. I do not recommend this book to young readers.
Other than that, I feel that this story is sure to please a large range of readers such as; Post Apocalyptic, Dystopian, Action Suspense, and Zombie (Horror) readers
A well written story about the aftermath of a zombie apocalypse. Unfortunately, I never really got involved in the story. I think because I never really cared about the main character(s). I also didn't find the ending satisfying at all. It just didn't seem plausible within the context of the story.
I found myself putting down the book numerous times and not being anxious to pick it up again. With something I rate a 4 or 5, I expect to find myself reading the book until 3 or 4 am into the morning, because I can't put it down.
Good plot idea, but I couldn't get past the thoroughly unlikeable main character & the HORRIBLE editing. I only finished it out of spite, as the editing actually got WORSE at the end (example: "excoriating" instead of "excruciating." THREE TIMES toward the end of the book!.) Save your time & sanity & skip this one, there's bound to be a better zombie book out there, certainly a better-edited one.
After the disappointment of its predecessor, Degeneration, Desolation proved to be a pleasant improvement. The writing style is more defined and while editing issues remain, they are at least fewer in number. The plot itself I found to be engaging, drawing me in and at times making my flesh crawl in a genre-appropriate way. By no means my favourite book of what I have termed "Zombocalypse Fiction" but ultimately an enjoyable read.
