Golden Heart and Daphne du Maurier Award winning author Kate Carlisle spent over twenty years working in television production as an Associate Director for game and variety shows, including The Midnight Special, Solid Gold and The Gong Show. She traveled the world as a Dating Game chaperone and performed strange acts of silliness on The Gong Show. She also studied acting and singing, toiled in vineyards, collected books, joined a commune, sold fried chicken, modeled spring fashions and worked for a cruise ship line, but it was the year she spent in law school that finally drove her to begin writing fiction. It seemed the safest way to kill off her professors. Those professors are breathing easier now that Kate spends most of her time writing near the beach in Southern California where she lives with her perfect husband.

A lifelong love of old books and an appreciation of the art of bookbinding led Kate to create the Bibliophile Mysteries, featuring rare book expert Brooklyn Wainwright, whose bookbinding and restoration skills invariably uncover old secrets, treachery and murder. Kate is a member of Sisters in Crime, Mystery Writers of America, International Thriller Writers and Romance Writers of America. She loves to drink good wine and watch other people cook.

Despite the appearance of overnight success, Kate's dream of publication took many, many years to fulfill.

The Bibliophile Mysteries written by Kate Carlisle get better and better each time. The Book Stops Here is no exception, and I find myself being more stringent in my reviews because they always impress me... so it's hard to keep upping the game, right? The other thing I've noticed about them is the author pushes a bit further outside the cozy zone with each book... a little more mention of foul language, discussion of sex, rougher violence in scenes. Don't misunderstand me... still a very cozyish series, but it brings a nice balance for those readers who also enjoy thriller and suspense as well as the lighter amateur sleuth investigations.

Brooklyn is a guest appraiser on This Old Attic in San Francisco. She values a book at $25K, which triggers several crimes and sudden new 'real owners' to pop up. When one of them is found dead, Brooklyn feels compelled to find the killer, especially since a scary bald man keeps stalking her, threatening to kill her if she doesn't return the book. Yikes, she better run... except on the set, a fellow host on the show is being stalked by someone intimately involved in the production. Derek, Brooklyn's secret agent boyfriend (of sorts), watches over her and the host. The two stories collide together, and when it all comes together at a fancy house party in San Francisco, there are fireworks... especially because Minka, that crazy other appraiser, returns.

A fun series that I really am enjoying. I've got 6 more to read until I'm current, and I will be finishing them up in early 2022. Carlisle is a smart writer. She balances retelling the facts and clues just enough to help readers solve the puzzle on their own. This mystery did come out of nowhere, slightly, but it was still strong and offered something different than all the rest. I enjoy the friendships she makes, and the new character, Alex, is a dream! She seems perfect, and I would love find out her real story. I don't believe what we've been told to date. Let's see where this one goes!

I am now updated on the is wonderful well researched Bibliophile series and have learned a lot about the history of books and bookbinding. Books have been my friends most of life, this series has made value them even more. Brooklyn signs with the TV show "THIS OLD ATTIC" as expert book appraisal. The first book she appraised the information is released on the local news. This starts Brooklyn on a frightening adventure that will keep you turning the pages. Her new neighbor, Alex is introduced into the story and begins teaching Brooklyn defensive moves. Do yourself a favor and read the series. This book can be read alone, but reading them in order is better as the characters are carried over.

This was one of two cozy mystery books I read today, and I was surprised to find I enjoyed this one more, because that wasn't the case at the beginning of the book. Still though, a book about the love of books was so far beyond awesome I almost can't describe how much I loved it!

There were two mysteries here, so it got a little confusing, but everything came out in the end. The characters were absolutely fantastic, especially Brooklyn and Alex. I loved their growing friendship! Cupcakes, mmmmm.

Five fun filled stars, a highly recommended cozy mystery!

Antiques Road Show meets Brooklyn. Another fun entry in the series, this time Brooklyn faces her greatest fear blood and loses spectacularly. I just love that our sleuth passes out at the site of blood, now that she's learning martial arts will she pass out if she breaks someone's nose. Maybe we'll find out in the next volume. I really love Brooks, her crazy family and cast of kooky friends and her nemesis Minka. Any book with Mae West as a plot device is more then OK with me.

Brooklyn Wainwright is hired to do book appraisals on the TV show This Old Attic. She appraises a copy of The Secret Garden for a woman for a very high amount. When Brooklyn shows up at the woman's business after agreeing to restore the book, Brooklyn finds her dead. Add on that the host of This Old Attic has a stalker that has been causing havoc, makes for an interesting story.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I love the introduction of the new characters, especially Brooklyn and Derek's new neighbor, Alex. I hope she sticks around for future books. The mystery was great and well put together. This is definitely a series I will be continuing.

The 8th book in the Bibliophile mystery series. A delightful cozy mystery about a rare book expert, Brooklyn Wainwright. Brooklyn appears on a TV show as the rare-book expert and appraiser. Things go from fun to worrisome, and Brooklyn is on the case to discover who is behind the violence. Humorous and entertaining.

The Book Stops Here is eight book in the A Bibliophile Mystery series.

I love this series and this was a very enjoyable addition and maybe the best so far, in my opinion.

Ian McCullough has suggested Brooklyn Wainwright name to the TV program This Old Attic, as a book appraiser. Brooklyn is excited to get the job, but at the same time being a little nervous at being on the air. But everyone on the set goes out of the way to make her feel at home. Brooklyn's first guest is Vera Stoddard who has a first edition of The Secret Garden that she claims to have bought at a garage sale. Brooklyn appraises it at from $20,000 to $25,000 and with a few minor repairs would add $3-4,000 more. Quite naturally Vera is amazed and ends up having the extra work done by Brooklyn. A couple days later heads for the flower shop that Vera's runs to pick up a check for the and extra work and finds the body of Vera, dead, stabbed with a pair of scissors. When she arrives back at the studio she is accosted in the parking lot by a burly brute who demands that he wants The Secret Garden, as it is book. Also about this time Randolph, the show's host mentions to Brooklyn that he is being stalked. Those with the show believe that Randolph is just trying to extra attention. Because of the attack on Brooklyn her boyfriend Derek Stone, a security expert has been accompanying Brooklyn to the studio. Brooklyn has another close call caused be falling scenery, but it is not clear whether this is an attack on Brooklyn or if in fact there is a stalking Randolph. Then when Brooklyn goes to deliver the invoice for the rework to restore some of the pages, she finds Vera, stabbed with a pair scissors in the flower shop that she runs. Someone is serious about getting the book back and Brooklyn and Derek will have their hands full to make sure who is trying to get the book back before the final chapter is written about Brooklyn life.

Not many of the character from previous books are back in this one, but there is one new character introduced who I hope will be back in future books. Alexandra “Alex” Monroe who is sub-leasing the loft next door to Brooklyn. Alex is a well dressed professional woman who also bakes some delectable cupcakes. But she also has a past that could come in handy for saving Brooklyn's life at some time.

Definitely will be watching for the next book in this exciting story.

Carlisle's Bibliophile series is definitely worth reading. While this installment was enjoyable, it fell flat in comparison to the others in the series. Characters that are normally dynamic felt two-dimensional and the writing felt more formulaic than in past installments.*

That said, this is a fun series that is loaded with interesting information about the art of bookbinding. I'm hopeful that the next book has more of the Wainwright family and maybe a little less of Derek's constant presence (which reduced any question of whether or not Brooklyn would escape unscathed).

*Yes, I am aware this series falls firmly into the Cozy genre, but Carlisle's writing is tighter and generally more thoughtful than similar offerings in this category.

This was over the top in ways, but a fun read so I'm giving it 4 stars.

What I enjoyed:
* The setting of the antique TV show
* New friend Alex, who is the opposite of Minka. Perfectly, perfect friend who has a high powered job, bakes amazing cupcakes, has an awesome wardrobe she lets you borrow.
* Derek is an amazing boyfriend, and I liked the naming the cat struggle
* Two unrelated mysteries

What could have been better:
* Minka showed up. I don't understand how a small world like book binding would put up with her
* As much as I like Brooklyn's family, I think I liked this book because they were barely in this one.

I am so happy that I finally started this series. Ms. Carlisle tells a wonderful story in an easy manner that flows. She populates this world with an interesting cast of characters that are diverse, rich, and well-developed. I get pulled into each story and don't want to put the book down until I find out whodunit. Her plots and mysteries are well crafted and multi-dimensional. As with the other books in the series, the plot revolved around books (which I love) and there are two mysteries that kept me engaged and guessing until the culprit was revealed. I like the addition of Alex and hope that she stays awhile. She had a good influence on Brooklyn in this book and I liked that she gave her a sense of empowerment by teaching Brooklyn some essential self-defense. Not that I don't love Derrick and Brooklyn together, but I think if she is going to keep tripping over dead bodies and having people trying to killer her, then she needs to be able to protect herself. I also loved how the storyline with her nemesis Minka wrapped up in this story.

I am looking forward to continuing with the series, but now need to wait for the next book to become available at my local library.

I jumped from Book 1 to Book 8 and obviously have missed a number of mysteries, but this works as a standalone as well. However, I read the first so I could be introduced to the main characters before plunging into this one for a reading challenge.

Brooklyn (she and her siblings are named for the places they were conceived--fits with who their parents are and the generation, etc) is a bookbinder who restores antique books who stumbles across murder victims (but then this is how most of these books work and we take that with a grain of salt, don't we?) and helps to solve them. What I like about this is that she and has obviously progressed and that this is only about a year after the first one. There is a fictional imitation of The Antique Roadshow, but it fits perfectly with her career so I didn't mind. The murders are tied in with Brooklyn being a guest on the show for the San Francisco episodes.

This book has murder, entertaining "guest stars" in the characters along with some familiar ones from the first book. It's not always highly believable, but then it's also humorous, so what can you expect?

I really liked this series at the beginning, but it has run out of steam for me. I didn't finish this one and I won't be continuing with the series.

Brooklyn has begun to get on my nerves. She used to be spunky and upbeat and different, but in the last couple of books she has struck me as whiny and self-pitying. I've also gotten tired of the constant references - either out loud or in her head - of how gorgeous and fabulous Derek is. We get it - he's handsome; do we have to hear it EVERY SINGLE TIME he enters a room?! Spare me.

I stuck with this series longer than I might have because I really did love the side stories about the restoration of old and rare books. Those moments were very interesting and I enjoyed them, I just wish there had been more of that.

As I said this series has stated to not be for me anymore. Others may love it but I'll be moving on.

A solid read, but 3 1/2 stars. Could be jumping into the middle of a series of cozy mysteries, but maybe not. It was good, but not good enough to hold on to the book for an eventual re-read.

I haven’t read the first few books in the Bibliophile Mystery series, but I see I will have to make up for lost time. I really enjoyed this story. Author Kate Carlisle has a wonderful flare for mystery. She always delivers a page turner.

I was fascinated by the concept that buying something at a garage sale and finding out it was worth gobs of money could get you killed. I think when I find my fortune at a yard sale I’ll keep quiet about it. ;-)

As with a few books I’ve read recently, the victim was found well into the book. I personally like that. There’s so much more time for a back on the person killed. It makes them more human and not just a faceless body.

This book was fast paced and attention holding. Lots of twists and turns to keep the reader guessing. I kept telling myself just one more page, only one more chapter. It took a lot to pull me away from it.

If you’re a fan of classic mysteries, you’re going to love THE BOOK STOPS HERE.

Brooklyn Wainwright is asked to appear as a book expert on the television show "This Old Attic". Her first appraisal is for a woman named Vera who has a rare edition of "The Secret Garden" that she bought at a yard sale. The book is worth a lot of money and Brooklyn agrees to touch up the book in places that need fixing. The next day she is accosted by a man who says the book is his and he wants it back. He threatens Brooklyn and only leaves when the police are called. Vera is found murdered and Brooklyn is sure she knows who did it. This wasn't as good as some of the other installments in this series but it was OK. It kind of dragged in places but on the whole it was a good read.

This is the first book I have read in this series. I am usually ok with that and don't seem to miss too much, but I don't think that's the case in this one. There were comments made that I didn't understand and HOPEFULLY they do relate to something that happened earlier in the series or else it would just be not so good on the author's part. As a mystery, I wasn't that involved(?) with what was happening to be really interested. I did like the ending though. Not sure yet if I'll go back and read the first 7 books in the series.

I love this series and I thought this was anther great read. Derek continues to tone down the "Darling" abuse, but he remains a fantastic romantic lead. The mystery was well done and didn't feel formulaic, either. I read the book in a day and it left me wanting the next one sooner rather than later.

This could have actually been a decent book if the main character was more likeable. She is the most boy-crazy, foppish and shallow person, real or fictional, that I've ever met. I imagine feminists cringing and turning over in their graves at this. Disappointing.

The Book Stops Here Brooklyn complained that she was running out of work and her friend, Ian, tells her about being a specialist on "This Old Attic" that helps people learn about the things they have and how much they are worth. Her first book is an old friend to her. It Frances Hodgson's "The Secret Garden" and she values it for more than the woman thought it would be worth. Suddenly after a blurb on the local tv news, she is being hunted by some very large men who want the book. Also, the host of the show is under attack by a stalker and some of the attacks on him have put her in danger. Derick is afraid for her safety and starts trying to stay close to her. Her new friend and neighbor, Alexandra, is also afraid and teaches her some things she can do for herself to keep safe while these men are trying to get her.

Fun story, there were moments that I was laughing out loud and other places where I felt that something was off, but the story did have me guessing until the end.

This is the 8th book in the series, and I am really liking it now. The first and second books I had a harder time getting into, but I have the next two and looking for the third. In this book Brooklyn is chosen to be a book appraiser for This Old Attic (like Antiques Roadshow.) Interesting to see some of the prices she told people their books were worth. A new character is added to the series...Alex, who is subletting an apartment in the building where Brooklyn lives, apparently she makes great cupcakes. Minka makes a brief appearance and then takes a job out of the country, so will we see her again? The usual amount of dead bodies and danger for Brooklyn.

It has been too long since I've jumped into this series and I was seriously missing it. I'm so glad to be back because Brooklyn is awesome, Derek is dreamy, and I am always fascinated by learning about old books. This book had the extra fun setting of the set of a tv show and we definitely met some interesting characters along the way. The mystery was also a bit different because Brooklyn seems set on the killer from the start and wants to prove it was him (but was it....hmm you'll have to read to find out!) I was completely surprised by the ending and it was done in such a dramatic way which I really enjoyed. I did miss reading about Brooklyn's book restoration as there was only a tiny bit, but loved the new information about book valuations. So glad to see her mom and Robin pop in, but also hoping we see more of them soon!

I just love this series by Kate. Every book in the series has been so good. This one also included they are page turners and just so interesting. I just love when a new book comes out by this author as you can be sure you won't be bored or not connect with the characters. Kate hit another grand slam with #8 in A Bibliophile Mysteries!

Quelques personnages sympathiques et une écriture plutôt agréable, mais l'histoire policière est juste ridicule et la relation de l'héroïne avec son mâle alpha m'a tapé sur les nerfs tout le long.
