Gerrit Cornelis Berkouwer was for years the leading theologian of the Gereformeerde Kerken in the Netherlands (GKN). He occupied the Chair in systematic theology of the Faculty of Theology, Free University (VU) in Amsterdam.

I really enjoyed this one. Berkouwer assesses the Catholic Church from a unique vantage point and offers critiques that hit at the fundamental assumptions and beliefs, rather than the small details that are often included in Reformed assessments of the Roman Catholic Church. The chapter on church authority was the strongest chapter. The final chapter, where the author throws three final thoughts together, was the weakest. Without the final chapter, this would have been a five.

een waardevol inzicht van Berkouwer vind ik persoonlijk dat hij de Mariologie (iets waar ik mij in wens te verdiepen) niet losgekoppeld ziet, maar als onderdeel ziet van de bredere opvattingen binnen de Rooms Katholieke traditie, aangaande de rol van de mens/ menselijke natuur in het proces van de genade. Berkouwer blijft in deze trouw aan de belijdenis "Sola Gratia" alleen door Genade van de Reformatie, als on op geefbaar tegen Rome met de leerstelling van een meewerkende natuur bij de genade.
Natuurlijk moet ook gezegd worden dat dit boek getekend is door een tijd die ver achter ons ligt, dat er zowel veel veranderd is in Protestantse als Katholieke Kerk.
Toch scherpt dit boek ons de felheid te zien waarmee theologische discussies werden gevoerd iets meer dan een halve eeuw geleden.
