Miles does not like his father's new wife and so he is very rude and unkind to her, but when Miles gets in a jam it is his new stepmother who comes to help him
"When we got back to Daddy's apartment, she said, "I'd like to be your friend." I said, " Well, that's too bad. I don't want to be yours!"
Oh, boy! Out of all the awkward children's books that I have been reading, this one has to be one of my favorites.
The kid in this is such a little shit and he has great comebacks to his dads new wife. I was laughing at every single page. But then he pulls a stunt and realizes that maybe new mom isn't so bad. I mean, she took him to see bears on ice!! That's a win in my book!!
This book can open the eyes of many kids that are in your classroom with a step-parent. The hardest realization for these kids is that the step-parent is trying to take the place of the biological parent. In this case, Judith Vigna is trying to teach that it is ok to not consider them your real mom; however, you do not need to entirely ignore that they are in your life. This plays on many fears that children with step-parents have, such as, parent replacement, being alone with the step-parent, and the step-mother taking the father. These are all topics that could be covered in reading this picture book.
