The go-to book for any football fan, not just Cowboys fan, but lover of football history. So many sports books have miscellaneous trivia and repeats of the same stories to the point where they are insulting to the true pundits who want and crave a greater depth of knowledge.
Hitzges gives you a well of knowledge as deep as the ocean floor as he inscribes and paints nearly every detail of the history behind the Cowboys dynasty of the 90s minus off-field drama. When Jerry Jones bought the team, why the firing of Tom Landry was such a debacle, how Jimmy Johnson was thrusted into the GM spot with a mere eight or so weeks to prepare for the 1989 NFL Draft. How the Herschel Walker trade came about. How the team survived the 1-15 season. The trade-up for Emmitt Smith. The upset of the then perfect 1991 Redskins, the first two Super Bowls, the divorce between Jerry and Jimmy, the insertion of Barry Switzer and the third and final Super Bowl victory followed by a very convincing argument for the 90s Cowboys (at the time) as the greatest team to ever play the game.
Beyond the front office, Hitzges shows the amazing psychological mind that was Jimmy Johnson, who could motivate the bi-polar Charles Haley and soothe the insecure Leon Lett and corral the personalities of the Triplets and more. Hitzges's specialty is revealing front office trades from behind the scenes, portraying the conniving minds of the salesmen and gamblers using draft picks as their currency.
This book more than any other has taught me the most about the Dallas Cowboys. I can take 5-6 books on my shelf I've gotten as Christmas presents and all of them combined can't equal to the value I got from this book, not just about the Cowboys, but about football and how it works.
