I didn’t relate to much of this book, and it came across as though the authors knew about God’s plan and were advocating their interpreted plans as truth for the reader 🤔😅

Not the book for me.

This book just helped me learn more about myself and my passion. What I should be focusing on and what I should not. It clearly clears the misconception of other people glorifying God more because their efforts are more noticeable. God equally looks in our hearts, which is what matters most more than the acts we show that other people sees. It also helped me understand the what serving God really means and why it is not really us giving Him service, because He does not need it, but by serving Him we are giving Him glory which pleases Him more than anything.
This, together with my group mentor and church sermons and the Bible and God's leading, helped me act on sharing the Gospel and leading my own group to share what I've learned and share my passion about Him. Hoping that they too, will pass it forward and hope that they will have a closer relationship with God.

Didn’t know what to expect when I picked up this book, but I enjoyed the multiple authors. John Piper’s first chapter and Francis Chan’s last chapter we’re the most impactful for me. I loved the expressed desire to make “His name and renown the desire of our hearts”. Overall a good devotional read that inspires wholehearted devotion to God in our lives.

I would have liked this book more if it had had a bit of editing in places to make it more readable - as it is, it is a direct word-for-word transcript from the talks at Passion. Had I known that in advance, I would have preferred to have listened rather than read them. Still great, though.

The chapters in the book by Louie Giglio I found excellent, the last chapter was inspiring, and the comments on blue jeans also stand out. Great stuff. However, the other chapters sometimes felt like uninspired padding out.... sorry..

Overview/Summary

Passion is a collection of short personal observations and speech-excerpts by Christian leaders who are involved in the Passion Movement. Passion speakers like Beth Moore, Christine Caine, and Francis Chan talk about what "passion" — the concept of passion as well as the Passion Movement — means in their lives. It's a short read and may be of interest to anyone who cares about revival movements, youth in Christianity, or trends in the church over the last couple of decades.

My thoughts

Usually, I like to start a review by listing some things I liked, then I add some things I didn't like, and finish up with an overall impression. It's hard to do that with this book because there are multiple authors talking about their own personal experiences. I could connect with some of them more than others, but it wouldn't be fair to judge the book just based on which ones I thought had something interesting to say.

Passion is an evangelical protestant thing, but this book wasn't about any one church's philosophy or a single author's view of what it means to be passionate about one's faith. I wasn't really impressed, but I'm almost 40. I married young, didn't start attending college until my 20s, and I became a Christian as an adult. I have no idea whether or not the Passion Movement is relevant to the experience of typical college-age Christians.

All of the twentysomething Christians I care about are people who have stopped attending church regularly because they don't feel represented or comfortable there.

I picked up this book because I wondered if the Passion Conferences might speak to that, but what I read was mostly rhetoric and exhortation to go out and change the world for God.

To be fair, the authors seemed genuine in their convictions. The passion movement certainly has grown since it began in the 90s, so it must be doing something right and reaching someone.

Some helpful quotes:

"We might be tempted to equate compassion with getting sad watching a movie or hearing a story. That’s not compassion; that’s sentiment. Compassion isn’t compassion until you are actually interrupted. It’s not real until it inspires action. It was the action not the sentiment that separated the Samaritan from the others." — From Chapter 8, Divine Interruptions by Christine Caine.

Caine's chapter focuses on how she became involved with the fight against human trafficking. It's a great story, and her idea of compassion is a lot like mine.

I also think it's important to inspire and encourage people of any age to engage actively with the world around them. (I don't believe that has to mean finding a cause or an activist group, but the principles are the same.)

"Remember that God is inviting you into dialogue. He is speaking to you through His Word. So what do you do when someone talks to you? You talk back. For instance, what are you thinking as you’re reading? Perhaps it’s, Lord, I’m so sleepy this morning. I can barely keep my eyes open. Okay, then say it to Him. Maybe you’re thinking, Lord, I don’t understand what I just read. I am clueless here. Say it to Him. Perhaps you are reading along and the subject matter reminds you of someone you know. Say it to Him. Use that word from God as substance for prayer. Maybe you’re thinking as you stumble on a passage that it’s one of the coolest things you’ve ever read or wondered where that verse has been for the last ten years. So, say that to Him. Engage in dialogue with Him in His Word. Talk back." — From Chapter 10, Sowing the Seeds by Beth Moore.

This is pretty revolutionary to me, and I'm glad I read the book just for this quote. My prayer life is like that, but when it comes to studying Scripture, I usually hear/read "stop talking and listen to what God's trying to say!" I've never actually encountered a spiritual leader who encouraged people to think of reading the Bible as a literal dialogue.

Overall

I picked up the book because Beth Moore was a contributor, so I definitely got what I wanted (or needed) out of it. I can't recommend the book as a whole, but reading Beth Moore's chapter is worth your time.

I normally don't read into "Group Books" but several contributing writes I've enjoyed previous works of theirs so it was interesting to have a topical book with several outlying ideas, insights and interpretations fo what exactly what the "Passion of the Glory of God" truly is.

{My Review}

When I heard Louie Giglio had a book coming out titled Passion, I knew I had to read it. I have never been to a Passion event in my life, but I have been following the Passion Movement for some years now and I love what they are doing and I love what they stand for. In Passion, Louie Giglio and other well know preachers and speakers write what they believe it means to burn bright for Jesus Christ.

I loved Passion. It was exactly what I thought it was going to be. I give Passion 5 stars! Oh, if you ever get a chance to attend a Passion event, GO!

Passion: Louie Giglio
‘Passion’ is a ministry created by Louie Giglio in the late 90’s. Focusing its ministry on college campuses, Giglio has reached millions of college students worldwide. His goal is simply to expose college aged kids to the love of Christ. He’s succeeded.
Now, he’s compiled a book filled with the best messages from the live events. Many Christians will have heard of the speakers who contribute. Each message provides an impact to the heart of the reader. You’ll sense their desire to teach others about God & why they do what they do.
Although the ministry has a demographic, the book does not. There isn’t any reason that someone of any age or background cannot read & appreciate this book. Basically, each chapter is a mini-sermon. It’ll certainly feed your soul.
Every contributor has established his or her place in the theological community. All are well respected & grounded in God’s Word. For instance, John Piper pens the first chapter & delivers one dynamic message on boasting only of the Cross.
While it isn’t a devotional, it will provide much food for thought & reflection. Small groups could turn it into a study guide. If you have or know college students, I’d highly recommend gifting them a copy. Theological students especially will learn ways to be effective in ministry & reach specific groups of people.
Worth a read, it’s a 5 out of 5 star piece.
I received an eBook in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are mine.

Passion: The Bright Light of Glory by Louie Giglio starts out as a brief history of the Passion Conferences. Since the target audience of Passion is for college aged people, I have never attended one, but the music that is introduced is part of the background of my daily life and the speakers are people who have had an impact on my spiritual growth. I also love the core verse: "Yes, Lord, walking in the way of your laws, we wait for you; your name and renown are the desire of our hearts." -Isaiah 26:8.

This book has key messages that have been presented by some of the best Christian teachers there are. Each speaks the truth found in God's Word to a generation who wants to do more than live a passive life, but to also follow Jesus passionately. But the message is not just to the youth; I have grandchildren old enough to attend Passion and I still eagerly absorb and am refreshed by the words of these speakers. This isn't a book to just sit and read through, but one that has multiple chapters that need to be savored one at a time.

Truly, there is beauty from desiring God's fame that will never fade away. I am still having a book hang over. I really love Louie Giglio and John Piper. Because of Passion, I am now looking forward to read books of Francis Chan, Beth Moore, Christine Caine and Judah Smith.

I appreciate this book. At some point I wanted to cry because I felt as if God is speaking to me through it. I realized so many things and learned so much as well.

I am encouraging everyone to go and get a copy of Passion because the message is really intense. They do not sugarcoat the message but they present it with all honesty.

I am really thankful that God sent Jesus to save me. And I am thankful that he is patient to me like the GPS example of Francis Chan.

"God is more glorified in us when we are most satisfied in him." -John Piper

this is a collection of messages from speakers from passion conferences. and it reads like a collection of speaker messages, not a book. which is frustrating, because most of the "authors" that contributed are phenomenal communicators, as well as gifted writers. but spoken word messages do not translate word for word to the written page. there is a disconnect with the audience. nuances and tones are lost. there's still a lot of good motivational, spiritual, encouraging ground covered, but this book would have worked much better as just a collection of podcasts with the original conference audio from the speakers.

This book was uplifting, difficult, and wonderful all at the same time. I was feeling like I needed to read something with more purpose, and this was a good choice. The main author, Louie Giglio, is one of the founders of the Passion movement, that encourages high school and college age kids to really consider seriously following Jesus. He and the other contributing authors did a great job of using scripture to help encourage the reader to remember that glorifying God is our purpose in life. I definitely felt encouraged by this and it was helpful to have a renewed mindset in the mornings on my way to work about what is really important in my life.

This is a mixed bag. Basically this book is a series of "sermons" put down on page. Louie Giglio has the bulk of these, with contributions from Francis Chan, John Piper, Beth Moore and others. All the "sermons" are good but 3 truly stand apart to me as the best. 2 of them are from John Piper ( Passion for the Supremecy of God & Getting to the bottom of your Joy) and 1 from Francis Chan (Living a life that makes Sense). No doubt different ones will stand out to others as they may speak to others situations more directly than they did to me.

This is a solid book to read if you are looking to live a life on fire for Jesus. It is a great book to read to stretch you intellectually in regards to your faith. Do not read this book if you aren't looking to be challenged in some way. I would say that you can definitely grow through reading this book. I would recommend this as a good read for people in their late teens to twenties. Louie Giglio is incredible.

Whether we find ourselves captive in a relationship, in an addiction, in a pattern of behavior -- whatever it is that has a grip on us, it's not because of someone else's decision or because circumstances just happened to land us there. It's always because of our own foolishness, and we are more foolish than we want to admit.

Key talks from a variety of speakers from Passion events in the last 15+ years compiled into this nice little package. I'm partial to the speaking of Piper and Chan, so those are the chapters I liked the most, but reading the history of how the Passion movement came to be was interesting as well.

It's not so much that the sermons weren't good, it's that I don't like reading sermons. I'd much rather see them spoken with the speakers' mannerisms and intonation helping to keep me alert and focused. This book took me a year to read...a year! It's proof I shouldn't read sermons.

This book truly captures what it means to have a Passion for God as shared through sermon excerpts from Louie Giglio, Francis Chan, Beth Moore, Christine Caine, and others. An amazing book.
