Finally, the exciting and long-awaited sequel to one of the biggest health and healing bestsellers of all time has arrived.
When Peter Kelder's Ancient Secret of the Fountain of Youth was released by Harbor Press in 1985, it immediately touched off an incredible sales phenomenon rivaled only by The Celestine Prophecy and Conversations with God. In this book, readers were introduced to the Tibetan Rites of Rejuvenation, a series of exercises developed over centuries in the monasteries of Tibet and credited by thousands for everything from increased energy to better memory, weight loss, and just looking and feeling younger.
Almost as quickly as the books filtered across the globe, letters began to pour in to Harbor Press requesting more information on these mysterious rites. Now, more than ten years and two million books later, comes a comprehensive companion volume that addresses the unanswered questions of so many readers.
Picking up where Kelder's book left off, Ancient Secret of the Fountain of Youth, Book 2 provides the complete Fountain of Youth health program, with detailed information on a variety of topics discussed only fleetingly in the original bestseller: the history and origins of the Five Rites, valuable insights about how the Rites work, diet suggestions, and easy-to-follow exercises. Illustrated with fifty black-and-white photographs, this guide will help turn back the hands of time, invigorating and energizing readers' lives as never before.
I enjoyed the historical portions as well as the latter section dedicated to nutrition and the importance of the mixing of the various varieties of foods in meals: I can very much relate to what has been reiterated. Good stuff.
Useless to say that you would fully appreciate the content of this book only if you start practicing the rites on a daily basis. For those you do not get hooked up by them though, it us still a book full of good suggestions for well being and health.
way better than the first one. broader perspective and none of fairy-tale things. this one encompasses all factual information from the first one and more.
This was recommended to me by a fit elder lady who felt she had gained a lot of health/youth from this practice. I went into it a bit overweight, but otherwise in excellent health and energy. About 10 years ago I started a yoga practice that made a big difference in my health. Other than all my grey hair, I already experience some of the benefits that are expected from following the practices in this book. So I'm probably not the target audience. I bought the book to learn about the 5 rites, as recommended by the lady. I did them consistently for 2 weeks, so I admit I didn't give it a fair shot, but in that time the feeling I got was that yes, these are good energy-stimulating exercises, but not the ONLY path to this kind of thing. For me, I would prefer to go back to my yogic path. I have experienced a renewed sense of purpose and sense that I will benefit from being even more consistent with a DAILY practice.
Other than the five rites there are other parts of the book to review. 1. The tale of the Englishman who brought the rites back to the west. A legend, fantastical, I'd put it in the category of mythology. 2. Learning about chakras/chi/energy. If you're open to these ideas, there's some cool stuff in here. 3. The chapter about sounds such as chanting that are probably helpful, but I think it's probably learning that from a book is less than ideal. I am interested in possibly pursuing this one day. 4. Then there was the chapter on food combining which probably helps some people, but overall I find it hard to believe that our digestive systems are that finicky. I never have any of the problems with digestion that were discussed in the book, so for me I'm going to pass on that advice. I've heard some natural hygiene people who feels their lives were turned around with these principles, so I think that's great that it worked for them. 5. There is also some fascinating discussion on Tibetan culture and history that left me interesting in learning more.
Here is a quote from Dr. Robert Thurman, a Tibetan scholar and close friend of the Dalai Lama that leads me to feel like this book holds some useful information, but the rites might be a gimmick for youth-obsessed westerners. (pg 246 in my book) "But it is important to understand that no true Tibetan Buddhist monastic community would have been practicing these rites as their main activity. They would have been part of a much larger, richer, deeper study and observance. A group of monks whose primary aim was to stay eternally young is peripheral to the goals and ideals of Tibetan Buddhist practice. But if the Five Rites are seen in the context of the Buddhist ideal that each person should strive to develop themselves to their highest potential for the sake of others, then there could be a philosophical basis for the emphasis on maintaining a vigorous and youthful state of health. To put it quite simply, we need to feel well in order to be able to help others, and enlightenment is not just a function of mind, but also includes body."
This is a fascinating study of The Five Tibetan Rites that allegedly can benefit health and add to one's longevity. Although the Rites seem fairly simplistic and easy to follow, one should take proper precaution in following them. Only through practice and experience with these Five Rites could determine their effectiveness. This 2nd Edition includes additional information concerning food combining, dietary advice, the energetics of voice and sound in addition to information concerning the various Hatha traditions. I would recommend this book
I find the 5 Tibetan Rites to be great exercise routine, whether you believe you are activating your chakras or not. This book has some information, looking at the exercises through modern lenses, but absolutely unnecessary after reading Peter Kelder's original book.
