I’ve always had a relationship with Jesus but it was rekindled in recent years and my mom and I began to read our Bible every single day last year. This was my first time reading the Bible cover to cover, from Genesis to Revelation, and it changed my life. It’s the best book ever, a book full of God’s love and promises fulfilled to us through His Son. My mom and I are going to keep reading this every day together and we are grateful for our one year with His Word! ❤️

Honestly this book (or collection of books) should get 6 stars. It tops anything else I've ever read. Just simply amazing...

OK so I stole this bible from my sister! Can you believe I stole a bible? But this bible is great... all these little entries along the way to make the bible not so boring. So when I need guidence or something I can skip the actual bible stories and read the advice columns. Thanks Laura

Never believed I would actually finish!!! I'm glad I had written out a schedule, otherwise I would never had gotten this far! Were there days when I read nothing? Of course! Were there days that I read that I was a maniac and played catch-up? Of course! Am I glad I took the time to finally read it? Absolutely!

Let's be honest, I'm never going to finish this at the rate I'm going. I like this translation and the font is slightly larger than normal.

What?

3 stars for the Bible?

Ok, so actually, I didn't read this whole thing. It was a just a to-hand copy of the Bible which has the Apocrypha in it. I've always been curious to read these extra books to see what's in them.

My star rating reflects the apocryphal sections, where 3 stars basically means I'm not interested in reading them again.

They're fine. I don't regret reading them. But I can definitely see why they're considered inessential to be included in the canon of the Old Testament.

Aesthetic Style The aesthetic of the writing is minimalist and straightforward. The author avoids complex metaphors in favor of clear and direct communication. This stylistic choice makes the book accessible to a wide variety of readers. See examples of the book's unique formatting at this link. >>> https://script.google.com/macros/s/AK...

I have to give this 5 stars because it is the Bible, and I can truly say that this youth Bible changed my life more than any other book I have read. I received this youth Bible from my religion teacher when I was 12, and this was the first Bible that I ever owned, as well as the first Bible that I read cover-to-cover. Reading the Bible for the first time was truly life-changing.

As far as the translation, the edition I have uses the NRSV. While I would not say that it is my preferred translation, it is still one of my favorites, and I like the NRSV a lot.

Regarding the study content itself, certain parts were helpful while much of it I just skipped over.

The helpful features included the book introductions, which were very helpful while reading through the Bible for the first time.

I also found the maps section very helpful, especially when trying to visualize the political boundaries of various periods as well as locations along the ways of the exodus or Paul's journeys, for example.

I also really like the narrative timeline that they have at the end of the study Bible, where it has a timeline of when everyone was alive and whose lives overlapped. I find this especially helpful to see the timing of all the prophets, and to this day I still refer to this timeline occasionally.

Also a minor point, but I really like the illustrations in this Bible, especially at the beginning of each book. It seems silly, but it was always exciting to start a new book and see the illustration at the beginning.

I do have some critiques for this study Bible though too. Even as a kid, I found a lot of the sidebars a bit corny and juvenile, often feeling like they were "dumbed-down" a bit, so I often just skipped them. It is this kind of content that I often think of when I hear folks like Bishop Barron talk about the insufficiency of modern youth catechesis.

The study bible content leans heavily skeptical, clearly depending upon the historical-critical method, routinely favoring (as "fact") very late authorship of the Scriptures and often flatly rejecting traditional authorship without offering any nuance. For example, a "Quick Facts" section in the Gospel of Matthew says that its author is "unknown" and that it was written at least 50+ years after Jesus' death.

In general, I'm not a big fan of study Bibles that lean heavily skeptical, because it seems silly to secularize the Bible. I don't mind usage of the historical-critical method, but the lack of nuance in this study content makes it feel entirely unscientific, not to mention that a proper invocation of the historical-critical method would present its findings as attested theories rather than as "facts".

Another minor complaint I have about this study Bible is that I dislike that there are hard stock pages that are inserted throughout the book, because it makes it where the pages often do not lay flat and I have to use a paperweight.

OH YEAH. CAN YOU FEEL THE JESUS IN YOU?

But really, it's been a very insightful and wonderful journey of Faith in really reading Scripture from end to end. How can we attempt to defend our faith when we have yet to even read up on our own beliefs? (hint hint: on to the Catechism!)

When I began, I doubted God and His merciless acts towards Moses in the desert. But after a challenge from my sister, I really learned. I sought to prove myself wrong and it's been eye-opening, to say the least.

The Catholic Youth Bible, specifically, has a lot of relate-able quotations and cultural connections to make the text a lot more relevant to an adolescent's day-to-day struggles. They can be helpful but, for the most part, more distracting.

All-in-all, read this. Any version. :)

This book has been a great resource over the years for my grandson. We started when he was around 8, and every vacation he got to spend with his Nana & Papa, this was part of our visit.
