4 stars: A captivating story
This book is the first in a new series called Emerald City, but is the 4th in the Black Family Saga. This book can be read without reading the previous stories, as they take place in the future compared to when the others take place, but having the knowledge from the first books really rounds out the story. Ray is the son of Luke Black and he has graduated from college, trying to decide which agent and pro football team to sign with. He is a good boy who has had a non-traditional upbringing. However, aside from his sister running away, he tries to rise above his circumstances. In comes Sydney, assistant/cousin to the agent who has had her eye on Ray. She is a mess, doesn't have a steady job, lives in a sparse apartment, and her cousin is in a coma. Sydney is trying to save her cousin's career by signing Ray, but has to go about it in some unconventional ways. The story that unfolds is so interesting, once you start reading, you will not stop. Ray and Sydney are quite endearing and you are rooting for everything to work out for them. There is a good bit of drama that will leave you enraptured, but the roller coaster that you are taken on is not quite as heart-wrenching as the previous books. I still definitely found the book enjoyable and would recommend it to anyone. There is passion, a feeling of falling in love with someone you probably shouldn't, and enough edge-of-your-seat drama to keep you reading. I kind of missed the crazy, extreme emotions of the previous books, but I still enjoyed this story.
I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
