Beds #3

Lonesome Beds and Bumpy Roads

Rate this book
Lexie Boggs has dealt with enough drama for one teenage girl, and just when she thinks it's about over, the father who abandoned her a decade ago shows up looking for redemption. At least… that’s what he says.

Ryan Parker thinks his future is set. He’s got a sweet job set up, graduation on the horizon, and a lifetime of dreams he’s planned with his girlfriend, Lexie—including a king-sized bed for their soon-to-be apartment. Only a slight snag tugs at the fantasy when Lexie starts putting aside all she’s worked hard on for her deadbeat dad and his “sickness.”

Suddenly school is the only time spent together, and as Ryan expresses his suspicions about why Daddy Boggs is really back, Lexie pulls away, hoping Ryan is wrong but fearing he’s right. And as graduation approaches, Ryan and Lexie struggle to keep the futures they thought they had firmly intact from crumbling all over their now lonely king-sized bed.

This is the third and final installment of Lexie and Ryan's story.

4.5 stars - I was lucky enough to beta read this book for these beautiful authors! I know, I know...your jealousy is warranted.

Ahhhhh, the last book in an amazing series. So much to live up to, and this book did NOT disappoint!!! The thing I've always loved about the Beds series (even right from True Love & Magic Tricks) is that the books perfectly balance humour (which the authors excel at) and real life heartache and growth. They're true Young Adult novels in that the characters are still dealing with the trials and tribulations of growing older and becoming an adult, with a little bit of outside trouble thrown in for good measure. In the case of Lonesome Beds, we have the surprise reappearance of Lexie's Dad. And it wasn't as cut and dried as we'd like to believe it could be. I was on one side of the coin throughout the whole book, and as such had to struggle with Lexie's decision making. In the end, while I saw things differently than she did, the authors do a fantastic job of ensuring that you understand Lexie's journey, and how she came to make certain decisions. And the thing about Ryan and Lexie is that they both make mistakes (and they do so in all the books), so part of the journey is learning to forgive them for the mistakes that they make. So it was a bit of a heartbreaking journey, but so worth it in the end.

And that's the other thing that this series (and these authors) excel at. When they give you a love story, they give you a *real life* love story. Not a high fantasy one with absurd conflicts and unrealistic resolutions. No, you get a story with real emotions, real mistakes, and a realistic resolution that's not always what you expect, but what is necessary for the story. Ryan and Lexie are best friends becoming more. And that becoming more isn't rushed like you might expect...b/c navigating a new dynamic *isn't* easy. Especially for two teenagers still learning about their own selves.

So, basically, if you've read the rest of the series (and really you should have), then you know what to expect. A bit of heartbreak. A bit of strife. And a whole crapload of feel good fuzzies, happy sighs, and laugh out loud hilarity. (seriously, I can't even begin to tell you all the adorable and hilarious moments in this book) I'm sad to see this one end, though can we say Brett's story anyone???? Now I need to go find my nail polish collection and celebrate this finale.

Lexie has a lot going on in her life -Graduation and college, her mom is 3 months sober and Lexi's in love with her best friend Ryan and they are happy. Everything is going well until her estranged dad shows up out of nowhere. What I really like about this book is that even though it's funny and even silly at times, there are some real issues. I felt so bad for Lexie and everything she's been through. Ryan is such a good boyfriend, he is so patient with her and sweet. I LOVED this series and I'm so sad to see it come to an end. I'm hoping that we will see more of these characters in the future though, maybe Brett will get his own story? I highly recommend this entire series to anyone who loves a sweet, funny romance.

I awwwhed, and grrred, I laughed and I cried. And cried. Not going to lie there was a lot of crying involved. Most of it was unexpected and came out of nowhere. I'm going to miss these guys so, so much. Lexie and Ryan have been one of the cutest couples and almost feel like friends to me so I will miss them. I know I'll get to see more in Brett's story so I'm still holding on to that thread and I cannot wait for that! I think I'll have to beg for more Nate and Kaylee. . .even a scene or two (*cough* or twelve *cough*) I don't mind. ;)

Anyway I'm rambling. That's what happens to me with these books. I turn into one of the characters. Which just shows how amazing the writing is, right?

I'm going to miss them but I couldn't imagine a better ending. Lots of growth and learning in this one as Ryan and Lexie got ready to leave school; their comfort zones; the relationship they had for years. A lot of people cannot wait to leave school so they can get away, be free, start their own lives but they soon learn that it's kind of hard. Lonesome Beds and Bumpy Roads highlights this as well as what it's like to have a relationship in school and try to hold onto that as life throws curveballs at you and you have to adapt to survive. And so does the relationship.

I have always loved the characters in this series; even if sometimes I did want to throw a spanner at Ryan or a bottle of "Life Gives You Lemons" nail-polish at Lexie. They're still such an adorable couple.

Reading this series has been a treat because it just shows how seamlessly two authors can work together and not have you stuttering to read every time the characters voice changes. There is no problems like this with these two. If you didn't know any better you'd think it was one person (or that the characters are real, like I do). And to be honest: they could share a mental wave-length, I don't know. I'm afraid to ask. But this works so well for Lexie and Ryan. Each section slots together perfectly and helps provide a smooth reading experience.

I don't want to spoil anything and just tell you to read it but as the title suggests there may be some ups and downs but that just makes the story that much more believable.

Hope you enjoy it like I did. :)

-Tia

P.S. If you're anything like me you'll fly through it in no time. Not because it's short but because you just have to finish it. So be prepared for that.

5 stars!

This book kinda blew me away. I expected them to have to deal with living together and their new lives as college students. All the learning that occurs during that time.

But no, these authors had to go and throw my heart in a blender. I mean, I thought for sure daddy was a douche canoe. Lexie’s POV made me think, maybe, just maybe, he is really here for her and wants to make it right. Usually I can peg a story line pretty quickly but this one I was unsure where it was headed. Lexie really grew on me in this book. She was trying to make the mature choices and thinking things through. She was giving her dad a chance, which is more than I can say for Ryan.

Ryan was clear cut in this book. He knew how he felt about Lexie’s dad and was candid about his jealousy almost from the start I felt. What I loved was that he owned it, he didn’t make excuses. He tried to be the supporting boyfriend without being possessive and making her choose between them. And he never gave up trying to make it work, most guys his age would have I think.

I also loved how her mom had her own demons in this book. She’s been on the wagon for a while now and I was concerned dad showing up was gonna be a trigger. The authors handled that temptation exquisitely IMO. It was a great, in-depth scene. Something so small that had such a huge impact really lets you know the authors have done their homework to keep the story line consistent.

This is a great series.

"My lips tug at the thought of my boyfriend and best friend, Ryan. As long as he's in my life, I couldn't ask for anything more. Okay, maybe that's not totally true. I can always ask for more chocolate."

Such a great ending to an incredible series!! I was drawn into these books because I'm a sucker for "friends to lovers" stories.
But they were so much more.

In this last book, you witness how strong Ryan and Lexie's friendship and love truly is. You also see how one certain event, or person, could change everything.

"I miss my best friend. And the weirdest part of it is that she never went anywhere."

Ten years after he left her and her mom, Lexie's father is back in the picture. Showing up out of nowhere and throwing their lives a curveball they never saw coming. Not only does it shift Lexie world, but Ryan's as well. He's slowly loosing her to the man that abandoned her all those years ago.

Ryan doesn't trust her father, or what he's been telling her. But he supports her decisions because he loves her...even if it's pulling them apart.

"Please don't make me choose. I can't choose between you and him. That's not fair."
"I'm not making you choose. I just love you too much to keep quiet about it."

But don't think this book is all sad and no fun! In true Becca and Tessa form, they wrote a book that has as many laughs as serious situations. Lexie and Ryan had me laughing out loud! Also, you can't have them without Nate, Kaylee and Brett.

Reading about these five characters makes me miss high school and the bonds that you make. You can take people that are so different, but they have a common bond...they need each other.

I can't tell you how many times I thought, "I did that!" or "That's just like my friend so and so." That's what makes me love this book/series! It's relatable no matter how old you are.

"You're a pig."
"And you love me."
"God knows why."
"Oh, I can show you why."
"I don't think God will approve."
"I never said he would."

Goodness me. I just enjoy a good young love story! The innocence of it all. The first time experiences that stay with you forever.

Lexie and Ryan go through a lot in this last installment of their story. Some parts you wouldn't want to wish upon anyone, but it's life. Lexie's dad returning was just the start of that curveball.

"I love you so dang much."
"Why's that?"
"Because you can make me laugh even when I'm broken."
"You are not broken."

Thank you Becca and Tessa for creating such loveable characters that I loved right from the first page until the last in the series. Lexie, Ryan, Nate, Kaylee, Brett, Pop-Pop and Grams will forever be in my heart!

I'll always remember the nail polish, ponytail braids, car-fixing, magic trick ways of these guys!

"Because I know that you love me, and I shouldn't take that for granted. And I especially shouldn't push you aside for someone who hasn't been there for me."
"He's your--"
"My dad. But you...You are my family."

Awe...Lexi and Ryan...when you thought everything was perfect and nothing could go wrong. So many feels in this book!! I also have to say that the supporting characters are just as important in this book as Lexi and Ryan!! Grams, Pop-Pop, Nate, Kaylee, and Brett help round out this great story!!

With graduation looming in front of Ryan, Lexi, and their friends, stress is at the top. Ryan has a new job and Lexi is working more to save for college, so the time they get together is treasured. Then someone returns from Lexi's past and throws a wrench in everything. Can she split her already limited time between the person she loves and the person she used to call her "hero"?

Ryan isn't ok with this new development, but is it because he jealous or because he truly cares for Lexi and doesn't want to see her hurt again?

Man, these ladies had me crying near the end!! You just can't do that to a person!! Though Ryan and the rest of the group really tried to be there for Lexi, I feel like she REALLY let them down and never really said sorry for it. I have never seen this side of Lexi before and I'm not sure I liked it. Kaylee and Ryan do something awesome for her and in the end I felt like what she did was kind of a HUGE punch in the stomach for her friends. I'm sad to read the end of Lexi and Ryan but I'm hoping that we will get to see more of them if there is a story for Brett...hint...hint.. :)

A bittersweet ending to the series. We have been taken on a roller coaster ride with Lexi, Ryan, Kaylie and Nate. I loved how all of them were such a tight family even though none of them were related by blood. I also loved how the story was REAL, it was not sugar coated in any way shape or form. I loved how Lexi's mom recovered from being an alcoholic and I never really trusted her dad who randomly showed up out of the blue, and my gut feeling was right. I felt that Ryan and Lexi were not particularly strong and they started fighting over insignificant stuff but what do you expect teenagers to do. They do not have the world on their shoulders and they are not supposed to though they had a good deal of problems. Nate and Kaylie were amazing friends and I loved how they were always there for them
I didn't want the story to end but it did so I was happy that it was a happy ever after kind of the series is done

I really love these characters and hate to see the series end. It does have a great ending though so that softens it a little. I adore the relationship these four friends have and wish I could have found friends like that! What happens to Lexie is heartbreaking but she is a strong girl and doesn't let it keep her down. As with all the other Cassie Mae books I have read I highly recommend this series!

I'd say only 2.5 to 3 stars. I was disappointed with this one comparatively.

Just FYI: Just like the first two book, this third one was written by two authors, both under pseudonyms: Becca Ann (Cassie Mae) and Tessa Marie (Theresa Paolo). Each one took a character and would write alternating chapters in their voice. I read all three books on Kindle Unlimited.

The Plot: In this third and last installment, we find Lexie and Ryan nearing the end of their senior year and deciding what to do after graduation. Though Lexie plans on going to college, Ryan is trying to figure out how to break it to her that he wants to take a break before college. His dream has been to be a mechanic and he got a job with a very good company. Then, at the beginning of the book, Lexie's father walks back into her life, causing things to get jumbled out of sorts, and claims that he is dying. Lexie's mom struggles to keep her sobriety in check, Lexie is sacrificing anything to spend time with her father, and Ryan doesn't trust the guy as far as he could throw him. All of this causes turmoil between Lex and Ryan, especially since they haven't had much time together as it is.

What I Did Like: It was nice to see both Lex and Ryan looking at their futures and deciding how to compromise on what they wanted. That seemed fairly believable. It was also alright to see some genuine turmoil in there relationship, since that's something that every couple has. It was handled decently. And, this book focused more on life issues than the other books, making it less cutsie. Which was also alright. Still liked Becca Ann's writing better. I really wish Becca Ann would have written all the books herself, honestly. I think it would have had more depth. She is without a doubt the better author.

What I Didn't Like: This book seemed to lack focus. It jumped for one thing to the next without much transition. It would involve you with certain things and then not bring it up again later. It didn't have a concrete setting of what it was going toward. I think they tried to fit too much of the long-term issues into the book. The book should have been longer, or should have been put into a fourth book to be able to elaborate on many of the things. I would have liked to have seen Lex and Ryan outside of high school dealing with these issues and working out their lives. I also cared less for Lex than I ever did Ryan, just like the other two books. I think a lot of that came down to the author that wrote for her, like I mentioned before. I admit there were less grammar issues and errors than there were in the previous two books for the Tessa Marie author. Still had a hard time caring for Lexie as much as I probably should have though, but there were so many times I just didn't care for the voice she was given by the Tessa Marie author.

This book was just too jumbled and stilted compared to the others. It didn't flow well. It felt like it was written in a hurry, maybe? It seemed to lack a lot of heart that I felt in the first two, and was much less focused. So, yeah. I'm a bit disappointed by this final book.

This is the third and final book in this series about Ryan and Lexie. I have heard rumours that there may be a story at some stage in the future about Brett so here’s hoping for that to happen.

Lexie thought her life was finally getting good. She is with the guy she loves, her mother has finally stopped drinking and seems happy and she’s about to graduate high school and thinking about college. And then her father re-appears. He walked out of her life when she was 7 and she hasn’t heard from him since so why re-appear 10 years later? He comes up with a lame ass excuse for leaving his family and another excuse for wanting to spend time with them now but can he really be trusted? At first Lexie is guarded and a bit wary of him. She sees what his re-appearance is doing to her mother and is concerned but he starts wearing her down and she spends time with him. After a scare she decides to trust him and that’s when things change.

Whilst she is starting to spend time with her dad, Lexie is neglecting Ryan. He just doesn’t trust the guy at all and this starts to cause tension between the couple. Also Ryan is working like crazy to save money so he and Lexie can move out together once they have graduated and she goes off to college. He hasn’t told her that the college dream isn’t really his but just hers. He is also trying to keep it a secret about why he is working so hard. He wants to surprise her with it as a graduation present.

There were moments when I just wanted to slap Lexie over the head for the way she was treating Ryan. Lying to him and hiding the fact that she was spending time with her dad and getting angry when he wasn’t available to spend time with her just because she felt like it. Ryan also had a few moments when I could have slapped him but he was the better out of the two.

Kaylee, Nate and Brett really only play minor parts in this book and I would have liked them to have appeared more but you can’t have everything. And Grams and Pop-Pop were just awesome as per normal. The tent scene was just too funny but Grams did give everyone a scare there for a moment in a very sad part of the book.

Overall a great ending to a fantastic series that I would recommend everyone read

Typically Alexis and Ryan's story is the exact kind of romance novel where I would quote my mantra, "sometimes more of a good thing is too much," because so often with books that aren't something outside of fiction/romance (ie dystopian, fantasy, mystery, etc) we DO want to know what happens next, and then when an author delivers this on this desire the next book is just not as good or disappointing in some way (this has been my personal experience anyway.) With The Beds Series this has not been the case, in fact I think that I liked this book, Lonesome Beds & Bumpy Roads, the most out of all three because while Alexis and Ryan still have issues and things to work through they have grown so much as individuals. I felt that while things were hit and miss between the two of them through the whole book, they were communicating instead of shutting each other out. They weren't being very understanding of each other's feelings the entire time - but they did come to realize that eventually.

I actually started out this series with the prequel novella, True Love and Magic Tricks, so I am always happy for scenes with Kaylee and Nate as well; the four of them are a unit, and even though the series is over, in my mind I can envision their lives, marriages, and future kids (who will also be best friends,) - it's like the ultimate big bow. My favorite part of the Lex/Ryan relationship; the two of them are so sweet, funny and the biggest goofballs; the relationship between the two of them lack some of the extreme seriousness that is so popular lately, and was a breath of fresh air. I relished their tickles, and teasing; the relationship felt so genuine and happy - and honestly, I had the "big goofy grin" throughout most of this series. ( I LOVED the covers and all the teasers that reflected this part of them, they were simply the perfect representation).

Lexie's life is finally turning around; her mom is three months sober, graduation is approaching, and she's in love with her best friend. Ryan has things planned out for his new job, and the secret king-sized bed he bought for Lexie as a surprise and to start their happy life together.

Enter Lexie's Dad; the man who abandoned her to live with her alcoholic mother and the news - yeah, he's dying. Things start breaking down as Lexie's mom is found by Ryan, staring at alcohol in the store. Lexie is stressed. She wants to support her dad and believe him, but it's hard. Ryan suspects that he is lying and tells Lexie. It doesn't go well. Their relationship is starting to come apart at the seams as she wants Ryan to support her as she struggles to find peace with her Dad back in her life.

As always, Lexie and Ryan made me laugh at loud and then want to cry a few pages later! I loved reading their story and I'm sad that it's over. I enjoyed the ending - it felt rich and it felt real. I'm really going to miss reading about Lexie and Ryan's antics. The whole scene with Ryan's grandma had me laughing like crazy and feeling so delightfully awkward!

This was a first for me from these authors and I had wish I had read the first two books first this is a real sweet story of love, patience and growing. Ryan is the perfect best friend and boyfriend. him and lexi have loved each forever it seems and now they are ready to go forward with their future until Lexi's dad resurfaces and is sick and she doesn't know wheather to belive him or not with his history and on top of that she dealing with the chance that her mom is falling off the wagon. Ryan is trying to be there for her buts it's stressful. I truly enjoyed this book it had real issues, with real results and Lexi and Ryan are tackling things so well with being so youg. I will definitely go back and read the first book in this series.

This is the last book in the series and I thought it was going to tie up all the loose ends and it does but not until it takes you on a ride with twists I did not see coming. I love these characters and their sweet and often funny romance. They feel like old friends. Ryan and Lexie are preparing for graduation and starting their new lives but the past keeps coming back. Lexie has family issues and Ryan tries to be supportive but it puts a strain on their relationship. Will their love be enough to handle what is thrown at them? This was a great book and I love this series. I recommend it to everyone looking for a sweet romance.

This last book in the series pulled at my heartstrings a bit more than the first two. There were still funny moment but the emotions ran deep in this one. A lot happens in a small amount of time that Lexie and Ryan had to deal with as they wrapped up their final months of high school and made decisions about their futures. Despite not having a perfectly happy conclusion where everything was wrapped up perfectly, it was a pretty great ending. It just felt right. Especially the epilogue.

Felt like the perfect ending to such a sweet story. I didn't love the way Lexie was acting, but all in all he redemption happened and everything worked out. It was a great series. Entertaining, though provoking, passionate... There was plenty of depth and tons of real scenarios that led to emotional pain and growth. They are all quick reads and not disappointing at all!
