"So why not take a chance and gamble on a human? I'll make sure you win."

WOW! Where do I even start in sharing my thoughts/feelings on this volume?! I felt there were so many "mic drops" that I honestly had to reread many of those lines/moments a few times in hopes it would sink in deeper. It really causes pause for reflection and challenges you as a reader as these characters take bold stands in front of blatant racism. While I'm sure people could argue that Sariphi is the main character so things will be "easy" for her, but I honestly find her story anything BUT easy. We as readers are constantly reminded that she's human and everyone around her is beastkind. She genuinely has to make brave decisions time and time again where it's an ACTIVE choice rather than a passive choice someone passed onto her. It is very powerful and thought this volume was extremely compelling because it's the first "opposition" we see between Loe and Sariphi because she wants to be active in her choices. It was incredibly good stuff that I was totally here for! (Also quick note! I LOVE how she is finding what her role is by Leo's side! I feel more and more she is coming into that role so powerfully and beautifully.)

However, the first quarter/half centers a lot around Princess Amit, and was SO happy it did! This cover is EVERYTHING! I joked with my husband today that my manga is better than his because how many titles can you say you're shipping two reptiles and totally hope they have a romance by the end!? LOL! She is such a wonderful character and felt ALLLLL the emotions when it came to her story. I continue to cheer for her and how she is growing stronger!

I am definitely nervous about the ending and what it means for the next volume. If Sariphi is more or less saying she has a bad feeling, then you know the foreshadowing is real. *nervous laughter*

Lizard Love and dangerous rebellions as we travel to another kingdom.

Honestly seeing what happens between Amit and Jormungand gives me hope for their future even if he is a bit dense (but kind) and she is too shy for her own good. Also don't miss the beast princess short at the end of the volume which is adorable and connected to these two. :)

Soon we are traveling out on the ocean as many of the crew are traveling to the kingdom of Bolstobas to meet the new king over there. Sariphi follows her heart and steels her courage as she and her friends discover things are not as they should be as Leonhart discovers another type of trouble requires his immediate attention splitting the royal pair once more as they both fight for their people in their own ways. Be sure to read this series to see how a simple human girl can become worthy of a beast king. :)

2020 Read #305

Political intrigues keep popping up in this series, but I unabashedly live for the bonus pages at the end of each volume that follow the beast characters in human form. As for the main story, the plot includes a lot of machinations, and it’s just a matter of following them to their end points. Nevertheless, this remains a solid fantasy series!!

In Summary

After a heartfelt romantic arc on Princess Amit and Captain Jormungand, Sari once again puts her queenly reputation on the line to bring about justice. The dilemma resolves itself a bit too easily, and the reason the Simians got enslaved in the first place is nothing short of ridiculous. Fortunately, the narrative is moving away from tests of Sari’s mettle to a challenge for Leonhard, which I hope allows him to do more than be Sari’s cheerleader.

The Review

Sari has pretty much been destined to be with Leo from the start, so the narrative provides a bit of drama by turning to a maiden who’s much less certain about her love interest. Previously, Amit took a big step forward by daring to give Captain Jormungand an amulet which she made with all her affection. Now, the Captain is back from his expedition, and he abruptly returns the token without explanation. Amit’s feelings for the Captain are obvious, but how Jormungand feels about Amit is less clear. In addition to stirring up maidenly sorrow and perplexity, the Captain’s actions–interestingly enough–leads to Lante getting to test his skills against Jormungand in a swashbuckling duel.

Then the story turns from reptilian romance to yet another trip for Sari–this time with Leo. Unlike previous arcs concerning the nations under Leo’s rule, this time we get a map of his territories, which provides a much better perspective what’s happening. (By the way, Ozmargo looks a whole lot like the Black Sea region in Eastern Europe.)

But during their royal tour of Bolstobas, Leo receives an urgent summons just as Sari catches wind of nefarious doings within the region. As a result, Leo entrusts Sari to handle the investigation while he rushes back to the capital. This turns into a challenge similar to the Maasya arc: Sari must overcome the prejudices against her in order to free the innocent and capture the wrongdoer. The arc is also similar in how quickly and tidily it concludes, although how the situation arose is nothing short of convoluted. Even Lante remarks on the absurdity of the Simian people’s enslavement.

While Sari is proving herself a champion of justice yet again, Leo is confronting a threat to his rule. Unrest within Ozmargo has been mentioned before, but now anti-monarchists are coalescing into a real force with powerful leaders. After so many Sari-centric arcs where Leo’s merely been steadfast support, having him face this challenge is a welcome change of pace.

Extras include embedded author’s notes and the bonus manga, “The Beast Princess and the Regular Princess and the Captain.”

Me encanta.

More of a 3.5 star rating;
Seeing more of Princess Amit and her romance struggles was something adorable to see play out in the beginning.
Another thing I really liked that happened in this volume, is Sariphi actively deciding to go against King Leo’s original wishes and help the enslaved despite knowing the potential consequences. Sure she’s went against his (and others) wishes before, however, for her to actually tell him and get yelled at then continue to stick to her value, felt like a powerful moment. Or at least to me it did.
I also really enjoyed seeing all the political unrest and violence being shown since it wasn’t as noticeable in previous volumes. There’s very clearly a large conflict going to happen, in the form of a war, and I’m both curious and excited to see how Sariphi, King Leo, and company, respond to it.

This volume had me:

1. Throwing up rainbows because Jordmand and Amit are so FUCKING adorable.

2. Making my heart swell and tears welling in my eyes over Sari and Leonhart because WHY WOULDN'T I?!

3. Laughing and squeeing over Lante because he's perfect and I love him.

4. Holding my breath over the conflict with King Timul and Sari.

5. Smiling so damn hard because Sari is such a great character and I fucking love her.

Lots of emotions and actions, thank goodness they didn't all occur at once. Really looking forward to the next volume and more info on the mysterious Gleipnir and Fenrir!

One of my favorite series still. Despite having to endure the painful waiting for new volumes, I do it happyilu for this series. In the volume we are sent to another kingdom where we see sariphi really come to her own (so cute) and really sets up for the next volume as we get a cliffhanger. >.> ugh I need more Leo and sariphi are just to cute. All the side characters are cute (I love her guard but also everyone as whole). And we got new species which is nice.

When I first read the first volume, I was drawn into a world of beasts and humans at war with each other. Now, in volume 9, I'm losing interest.

Seems like the author is repetitive with Sari being questioned as Queen Consort to Leonhart and him always being in beast form and never really seeing the two interact.

Definitely had to stop reading it (volume 9) because I grew bored. Which doesn't happen often with manga.

An interesting story that sets up the next villain of the Story as the anti-king groups are moving and being unified under the next villain but the main story is a lot less interesting as it just involves Sariphi uncovering a plot by a lord to a slave force. It was ok but just feels a little like filler.
