Dragonblade ##2.5

The Fallen One

Rate this book

1332 A.D.

As the premier commander for Roger Mortimer, Earl of March, when he commandeered the throne from a young Edward III, Sir Mathias de Reyne is the type of knight that all men aspire to be; fair, powerful, intelligent, and bold. Men on both sides of the Mortimer/Edward lines respect and admire de Reyne for his outstanding character, including Dragonblade himself, Tate de Lara. Before the war separated men into two groups - those that supported Mortimer and those that supported the rightful king - Mathias, Tate, Kenneth St. Hever and Stephen of Pembury were inseparable friends. But then, sides were chose and lines were drawn. When Roger Mortimer lost his head, Mathias de Reyne was spared because of his great and fair reputation. Stripped of his lands and titles, however, he was forced into obscurity. He became known in legend as The Fallen One.

More than a year after being stripped of his knighthood, Mathias now makes his living as a blacksmith in the north Cumbrian town of Brampton. One morning, he hears cries for help and, being an innately brave and helpful man, follows the cries and comes upon a terrible scene. Rescuing a young woman from a fiend, he very quickly realizes that the young woman is the most beautiful he has ever lain eyes upon. The Lady Cathlina de Lara is a lush beauty with dark hair and flashing dark eyes, and the attraction between the pair is immediate. But she is also a de Lara, related to the man who took Mathias’ titles from him… his former best friend.

Still, he cannot forget the dark-eyed beauty and soon finds himself swept up in a wildly passionate love affair, breaking his promise to never bear arms again by resuming his knighthood without the permission of the king and fleeing to Scotland.

From the brutal Scots borderlands to the fields of Dupplin Moor and a historic battle, join Mathias and Cathlina as their journey in life takes them on a passionate adventure of love, life, learning, and the redemption of the man once known as The Fallen One.

Read as part of The Age of Chivalry and Romance anthology. Definitely prompts me to read the stories associated with Mathias' compatriots.

I'm having such a great time plowing through Ms. Le Veque's books! I'm in medieval heaven! ;)

First read 6/19/14. Currently re-reading as part of "Age of Romance and Chivalry" boxed set. ;) Loved it! Again. I highly recommend reading the entire trilogy. It's great. As soon as I finish reading this boxed set, I'm going back to re-read it again myself. ;)

You know you are into a great book when your husband comes to bed after you and you shush him because you are "in the middle of a battle!". With surprised eyes he lie down beside me and read along with me for two pages. This is a good book! Don't think I've ever had that happen, nor did my husband believe me I was reading something with a battle "scene". Chuckling as I remember.

This is my first book by Kathryn Le Veque, which puzzles me, but now I will gobble up her books with great glee!

Cathlina and Mathias meet under unfortunate circumstances but there is nothing unfortunate about their meeting, their courtship, nor their life that follows. The author tore me from this century and sent me delightfully back to 1332 A.D. with ease and with vivid descriptions of this medieval world. I've always had a thing for Knights..... but these Knights made my heart stutter and pound!

Dia dijuluki The Fallen One.

Review saya geje banget 😅

Sometimes you have to do what’s wrong because of family promises. Friends separated into two groups, those who support Mortimer and those who support Edward. Mathias, his hotheaded brother and father’s heads were spared by the king but were stripped of their titles and lands (which to some is worse than death) because they supported Mortimer due to family ties but he was known for his great and fair reputation. He becomes known as The Fallen One.
They become blacksmiths and know that if they ever use a weapon, they would lose their lives.
Mathias hears pleas for help and rescues a young girl who was about to be carried off while her sister was trying to fend off the fiend. There is an instant attraction between Mathias and the woman but when her family returns to the wagon, he realizes she is a de Lara, who coincidentally is related to the man who stripped him of his land and titles.
Thus begins a story of a young lady who can’t forget her rescuer and a rescuer who tries to forget the most beautiful girl he has ever seen.
You will have to read the story to find out the rest.
This is a spellbinding story from start to finish.

Love and honor.

Sir Mathias de Reyene is a dishonored knight. He sided with Mortimer against king Edward because Mortimer was family. When Mortimer was executed Mathias and his brother and father should’ve been executed as well. However, his friends Tate De Lara, Stephen Pembury, and Kenneth St. Hever, convinced the king and others to spare him because of his strong reputation as an honorable knight who served the king for many years. To save his life he was stripped of everything, his knighthood, titles and property and went on to live as a blacksmith. That’s when he met the lovely Cathelin de Lara. He saved her and her sister from being abducted and they had an immediate attraction. That’s when he realized he had something worth fighting for and he came up with a plan to regain what he once had, along with a wife. I really enjoyed the the story and the male characters but I had a difficult time liking Cathelin. She was so immature and selfish to the point of annoyance. I could not see his attraction to her beyond the physical aspect. However I did enjoy the the strong knights being back together again.

Wonderful story!

I loved this story of Mathias de Rheyne and his wife, Cathlin. I always hate to see these books end as I'm continually having to search for new books by this author and have begun to have to dig deep to find those I have not read. This book good of Mathias, his brother, Sebastian the Red and their father, Justus, who were all stripped of their knighthoods, titles and lands because they fought forGo her Mortimer. They really didn't have much choice because Mortimer was a relative by marriage & Mathias has promised his mother he would always support the husband of his mother's much loved sister. When Mortimer was put to death the king could have also put Mathias & his family to the same fate. However, King Edward had long been friends with Mathias, as well as Mathias was good friends with Tate de Lara (Edward's uncle & mentor), so the de Then he men managed to keep their lives but little else. While making their living as Jackson's they met the woman Mathias would marry. It was a wonderful story!

8/26/2022- I'm reading this in the bundled book "Brides of Scotland" and haven't read the original stand-alone novel.

There is a major plot error(?).

On page 786 (in "Brides of Scotland"), Cathlina says
"Her mother had been frank with her and Roxane when they had crossed over into womanhood about what was expected from a husband"
and "she had gone so far as to seek out an experience to find out what, exactly, her mother had meant. He had been a young knight, no longer serving her father, and their tryst had been over before it began when he had spilled his seed over her shift in his excitement."

Yet on page 799 (in "Brides of Scotland"), Cathlina tells Mathias
"When the lady of the castle (where she was fostering) explained the ways of men and women to the young women in her charge… the way she told us of coupling made it seem so… she spoke of it as if it was nothing precious or unusual. She spoke of it in little detail and told us that we must discover for ourselves one day what a curious and detestable act it was. We decided that one of us would find out what she meant and tell the others and…"

So two obviously different versions of how she learned about sex. Rather jarring.

****************
8/27/2022- Finished & was rather disappointed. I struggled to finish this, but every time I decided to "dnf" it, I was drawn back in. I wonder if this was an earlier book since the writing was uneven.

The Fallen ones return

All ok KLV’s books are just fabulous! I believe I have almost every one of them as a book and the same for those available in audiobook form. Each book has had lots of detailed research which is mingled in with Kathryn’s creative genius producing a work of art. She has the innate ability to transport you to another place and time for an exciting adventure with members of families you feel you actually begin to know. The Fallen one is a story of honor, betrayal, great friendship, love and overcoming what seems to be an insurmountable life altering situation. You will really be missing out if you pass this one by. Highly recommend this one.

I enjoyed The Fallen One. Mathias and Caithlin meet when Mat is just a talented if humble blacksmith. He was a knight by trade but was on the wrong side of the king and came away without his lands and titles. He has to prove his loyalty to the king so embarks on a Scottish war. Although he is able to marry Caithlin, he has to leave her behind in order to fight to restore his reputation. A good adventure.

Loved the story!!

Mathias was a great knight finding with his uncle Lord Mortimer against King Edward. When Mortimer was captured and beheaded King Edward stripped Mathias, his father and brother Sabastian of all titles and his knighthood. He became a smithy.
When an Englishman tried to abduct Catalina’s sister Mathais came to the rescue. Mathais and Catalina fall in love and run to Scotland and married. This was an exceptional story.

Finding your way back

Being safe by a man who work with steel and horses who has been lost from every thing that he had. His family lost everything also until he meet this woman who he and his brother had saved. Over time they fill in love and married. I give this story a five star rating.

Excellent

Another excellent medieval story by Kathryn LeVeque. I get involved Elin these stories and sometimes it's like I'm watching instead of reading. The main characters in this story felt like friends or maybe my kids. They loved and learned. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to be hooked on a book. Happy Reading.

Just have the tissues handy, I needed them.

Great love story

I enjoyed this book. Kathryn I don't know if you read these or not, but I have enjoyed these stories. As a former Navy wife during the Vietnam war my husband left and there was always a chance he wouldn't return. He did and we were married 57 years before he passed.
