I've read a lot of self-development books but this one stands out as being uniquely presented. Author Nicholas Bate includes a lot of his own sketches and drawings, which add a dimension to his writing that is missing in other books in this genre, and writes in an almost conversational style which I found easy to follow and understand the points Bate was trying to get across.
I've enjoyed Bates blog (Strategic Edge) for a while now and this book echoes the style of the blog. It's a very practical guide that anybody will find motivates them to be better. I've sent copies to friends, family and clients.

My mom was encouraged to read this book when she became the manager of a hospital unit, and she passed it onto me when I got a job that involved leading and managing others. I'll say up-front that it isn't necessarily up my ally, but I was able to glean a bit from it. The main issue is that it's just totally written for folks in a world I've never belonged to, largely the corporate workforce. So the book is riddled with examples around promotions and presentations and strategy meetings and so on that don't feel all that relevant to my current or future line of work. However, that's not to say that I wasn't able to do some "translating," and when I did I realized that some of Bate's core ideas are actually ones I follow and lead my team members through. For example, developing a "compass" and using that as a guide for one's decisions and plans is a really powerful tool I believe in (though my directions of values are less prescribed than his).
As with much personal development coaching, a lot of the book offers valuable truths gleaned from the fundamentals of psychology, so in other words a lot of it felt a bit obvious. There were a few helpful reminders I appreciated, like the encouragement to intentionally step away from being digitally or physically accessible for parts of the day to get bigger projects accomplished or reorient your time to ensure that the most important things are getting done rather than the most urgent. Something that irked me at times was how simplistic things are presented, and how dismissive he is towards the examples of resistance included. The book is very blatantly written for a certain class of mostly-successful and mostly-accomplished professionals, but it wasn't marketed as anything but that so I can't dock too many points. Three stars feels a bit generous, but I appreciated how readable the book was (the abundance of images really lets you fly through it) and that kept me from ever having a moment of genuine frustration that's part of my criteria for a two-star.
Compared to all the other "self-improvement" texts out there, this one worked for me. I say "me" because this kind of review can be quite subjective. That said, I found the author's tone to be lightweight, yet substantial enough that it wasn't too fluffy, nor was it too in-your-face. I particularly liked the relative tendency to distill things down into consistent (and rarely reaching) scenarios. As can be the case with books like this, there are elements that you've probably heard/read before, but this was a nice volume that consistently spoke to me and reinforced the core principles without seeming too "preachy".
I'm an admitted fan of Nicholas Bate's work. He was kind enough to send me a copy of You, Only Better, with no strings attached. I really enjoyed the book. It forces you to step back and get some perspective. What was nice was that when some of the early advice seemed surfacy, Bate then immediately dug into his own advice, clarifying it and taking it deeper.
I like the format with lots of little drawings and illustrations. I walked away with an inspiration that I tend to get from Tom Peters books complemented by useful illustrations like Hugh MacLeod's work.
Liked the images in the book! Conveyed a whole lot sense than could be said in words. Liked the A-Z of You, only better. Thought that was the best giveaway I can take away from the book!
I went to one of Nick's day courses a couple of years ago. This book lays out a lot of what I learnt that day and has a lot of other useful information in it.
