Looking for a fun mystery that is a quick read? Look no further than Susan Miura’s Show Me A Sign. This was such a treat. The main character Nathan is a quick-witted joy. I loved his internal thoughts and the back and forth between him and his best friend was perfection. When the object of his affection, Haylie, is kidnapped, Nathan finds himself being investigated by the FBI. He jumps headfirst into trying to clear his name and find out what happened to Haylie. One of the most enjoyable books I've read in quite a while.

I love Susan Miura’s writing style. I am immediately drawn into her stories and want to know more about her characters and what is going to happen to them. Throw in the fact that they are YA clean reads, that I can let my daughter read, and it’s a win-win!

After reading the prologue, I didn’t want to put this fast paced thriller down. Even though this is a novella, it reads like a full length story. I loved Nathan’s friendship with Alec! Their banter was pretty funny and their nicknames for people had me cracking up! Alec is a great secondary character and I’d love to read his story one day. I really liked Haylie. She’s smart and sweet and spunky. She doesn’t let the fact that she is deaf slow her down!

With this story, Susan Miura has jumped on to my auto buy list of authors! I am looking forward to her next story, Shards of Light, which comes out August 29th! It is the follow up to Healer, which I reviewed on Instagram on May 7th.

Thanks to Susan Miura for sending me this copy! All opinions are my own.

Several years ago, my teenage daughter got me hooked on YA (young adult fiction). Since then I've been repeatedly blown away by not only the content of the stories, but the writing, and SUSAN MIURA'S, SHOW ME A SIGH, is no exception.

Right from the start, I was drawn in. I love MS. MIURA'S voice, her humor, and her spot on accuracy to capturing a male teen character. I'm a mother of four, three girls and a boy, and it's not uncommon when reading a novel that I cringe when an authors secondary character is a child of any age. More times than not, they were not successful in capturing the true essence of a kid, whether that be a two-year old or a seventeen-year old.

Nathan Bolivan attends a high school for the hearing as well as the non-hearing. He's had his eyes on Haylie Summers, who's both beautiful and deaf. His excitement of their upcoming first date is quickly turned upside down when he discovers Haylie has gone missing ... and he's a suspect.

Haylie Summers is abducted, tie-up, and blindfolded. Frighten, and not able to hear her captors only adds to her uneasiness. As she remains imprisoned, she wrestles with the answers to the questions swarming around in her head. Why is she being kidnapped, and by whom? Would she make it out alive, or would she never see her family and friends, again?

SHOW ME A SIGN is wonderfully handled in first person between the two main characters. There's just the right amount of suspense, mystery, love, humor, and faith all wrapped up into a believable and powerful story. The flow is natural, with a captivating pace and plot. The humor is refreshing, the characters are three-dimensional, and the writing brilliant.

Though I enjoyed all of the characters, I'd have to say that aside from Nathan, his best friend Alec, is my favorite. He's fun and likeable. MS. MIURA did an incredible job incorporating a teen British boy. With the One Direction craze going on in the teen world today, her timing could not have been better. I loved the interaction between Nathan and Alec. Natural, funny, and entertaining.

Start to finish, there wasn't one thing I'd change in SHOW ME A SIGN. As an aspiring author, I tend to edit as I read. A true sign to a brilliant storyteller is the ability to incorporate all the aspect of what goes into writing a great story, and that MS. MIURA has accomplished. I may be long past my teen years, but you can bet I'll be looking for her next book.

I didn't really know what to expect of this author's writing or the story but found this book when seeking YA novels that feature deaf teen characters. Here are some of the positive aspects of Show Me a Sign:

There's a nice balance of narrative with the dialogue. I enjoyed the narrative, which put me into the heads of Haylie and Nathan. The story is told in their two points of view.

The teen voices are good.

Haylie and Nathan are believable and likable characters. I could actually feel Nathan's worry and Haylie's fear during her captivity. Their emotions were compounded by Haylie's inability to hear.

Nathan's best friend, Alec, is a complex secondary character, not flat, and not the typical sidekick.

Haylie's non-human friend is unusual and a wonderfully sweet surprise in the story.

In addition, I appreciate clean reads like this one. No bad language, no sex.
